Chapter 114: Lead (1)

Caleb and Jess spent the last two days in the Duchess’ estate, which was now more of Caleb’s own home.

Silvia had instructed her household to treat Caleb as they would treat her, and while nothing was official, the duchess didn’t care if word got around.

The time spent getting to know each other better brought a new light into the duchess that her people hadn’t seen, if ever.

The Duchess was found smiling and daydreaming most of the time, barely able to do her job. And she wasn’t the only one. Jess was equally in high spirits after laying the first claim like she intended, solidifying her place as first.

Caleb, of course, didn’t leave the duchess as she was either. Now that Silvia was his woman, he couldn’t leave her weak and unprotected.

He awakened the duchess’s full potential, granting her abilities that would save her life in any situation, whether he was around or not.

The experience of the duchess and some things Caleb shared with her opened her eyes to many things. It made her understand how Caleb was able to do the things he was capable of.

The big question was how power like that came to him. The power to change a person’s fate was not something anyone could wield. Silvia was glad it was in the hands of someone who understood that power.

Anyone else would have abused it in ways that could turn the kingdom upside down. Caleb was literally in a place where there was nothing that could touch him, at least on this continent.

When it was time for Caleb and Jess to resume their journey and eventually return to the capital, the duchess gave Caleb everything he might need on his journey.

She also made him promise to come visit her more often, given the kind of abilities he had. The duchess was expecting more alone time with her man than even she thought. After all, she enjoyed her moments with Caleb.

With the help of the duchess, Caleb got a special adventurer ID that identified him as someone who took on sealed dungeons and the most dangerous of jobs.

The first ever Black Ranked Adventurer – something Caleb made up with a bunch of other changes.

...

In the heart of Sunspire City and in the dead of night.

Caleb and Jess abruptly appeared in a particular street, their gaze locked onto a specific building. Even at his ungodly hour, there were still activities around.

Their sudden appearance got people off guard, but this was not something new. A lot of people had spells and abilities that made them unique.

’There’s no one.’ Caleb’s domain sense found nothing in the building he and Jess were scanning. ’Must have changed locations or something.’

"Erm, are you two looking for something in particular?"

A sudden voice turned Caleb and Jess around to see a shady-looking man looking around like he was on the run. The person had their face covered under a hood, but that was a pointless action before the two.

"Yeah..." Caleb replied, turning to face the man. "Do you know where we can find the man who used this building some time back? His place seems to be empty."

"Huh?" The man took a step back, but then his demeanour changed. "So you’re the ones." He added in a cold tone.

The reply caught their attention. It seemed they were expected to make an appearance sooner or later.

’I can’t say I’m surprised.’ Caleb thought. ’Given the words I said at the time and the rumours going around, it’s not hard to deduce.’

Word about his actions had already spread. The knights stationed at the sealed dungeon that was no longer in existence had spread the word of his deeds.

"Tell us what you know." Jess didn’t care about the change in the man’s behaviour.

However, she quickly noticed something. The people around were beginning to look at them deviously like they didn’t belong. Some had even stopped what they were doing to watch, slowly coming closer.

"What’s going on?" Jess turned to the man who was slowly backing away.

"They knew we were coming," Caleb replied with a sigh. "It’s my fault, actually. Not that it matters." He stepped towards the man, and the man stepped back even more.

"You’re not welcome here," The man said. "And whoever you’re looking for isn’t here. It’s best you leave. We don’t want any trouble."

"Mhm, I doubt that." Caleb looked around. "And from the looks of things, I’ll say someone here knows something. Anyone?"

Caleb turned around slowly, staring at the gathered people who looked at him and Jess cautiously. No one made any obvious moves, but Caleb was sure the person they were searching for had someone left behind. fгeewёbnoѵel.cσm

"Maybe roughing you guys up a bit should jog your memories?" He made a suggestion and waited for a response.

When no one reacted, he turned back to the man they spoke to earlier. The man had backed away, now joining the others in a circle around Jess and Caleb.

"It seems you aren’t being taken seriously." Jess pointed out the obvious, her arms folded over her chest. "Do what you said you. These morons can’t be taken seriously."

Without a word, Caleb stretched his right hand towards the man. The man yelped in shock as a sudden force wrapped around his body and hurled him straight into Caleb’s outstretched hand.

"Don’t even think about it."

Jess growled and the next moment, the surrounding men groaned and fell to their knees. The catwoman unleashed a heavy pressure that pinned everyone down.

"H-Hey, man. I don’t know shit, okay?" The man freaked out and began spilling before Caleb did anything. "I-I only know the word on the street."

"What word?" Caleb stared into the man’s eyes, his tone low and cold.

"The person you’re looking for booted about a week ago. However, before he left with his entire organization, word of someone who would eventually appear to destroy our life’s work hit the streets."

"You don’t say." Caleb scoffed. "What else did you hear?" He pressed harder.

"N-nothing else, I swear!" The man cried desperately. "I’m just a low-level dealer, okay? I don’t know much."

Caleb shifted his gaze to Jess, who nodded and relaxed the intensity of her aura to a level more bearable than before. He didn’t worry about the man telling the truth or not, that was not the significant bit.

’Our lead is on the move.’
