Chapter 118: The Hunt (1)
"Boss, we didn’t find anyone around."
A subordinate of the boss came to whisper in his ears. This wasn’t a surprise as it was only protocol. However, from what those two men were saying, there should be someone or two after them.
’Either they are lying to delay the inevitable, or their target was not following them at all.’ The man thought with a frown. ’It could also mean the targets are good at hiding.’
Regardless of what it was, he wasn’t going to let his guard down, and the men before him were dying today.
"Boys!"
Archers took aim and spell casters got ready for the command to fire.
"You don’t have to do this!" George yelled, gritting his teeth in anger. "We may be outnumbered, but that does not mean we will go down quietly!"
"And I don’t expect you to." The man scoffed as he jumped back. "Let loose!"
At his command, the archers unleashed a rain of arrows at the three men while the spell casters hurled a flurry of spells at the three. It was overkill, but it was better than going easy on them to give them an opening.
"Fuck!"
The two men reacted swiftly, channelling their mana to conjure their defensive spells. Leslie wasn’t outdone either, however, he was much weaker than his companions.
A protective ward took shape around the three men as the arrows arrived first, quickly followed by the flurry of fire spells.
BOOM...!!!
The explosive power of the spells blew the carriage to smithereens, the shockwaves dispelling the surrounding air while tearing into the ground and sending debris flying.
The boss knew this wasn’t enough to kill fighters like those two. However, it was enough to leave them injured and severely drained of their mana.
"Over there!"
One of the men pointed as two figures flew out of the dust rising dust and smoke, making a run for the edge of the path.
Because they were travelling on a steep road by the mountainside, Henry and Goerge decided to take the risk. The fall wasn’t small. However, given their circumstances, they could only take the chance.
Leslie wasn’t lucky like they were. While they came out with severe burn marks all around their bodies, Leslie was completely charred, having failed to stop the bombardment of fire spells.
"Stop them!"
The boss man ordered as his men moved without delay, immediately cutting the two men’s path. However, George and Henry weren’t going to make it easy for them.
"Out of the way!"
Withdrawing their swords, Henry and George clashed with the bandits midway. The two men were outnumbered, but they were stronger.
Henry’s steps were fluid as they were agile. In one fluid motion, he swept his sword in a continuous arc, deftly manoeuvring around three bandits and severing a left arm, a right foot and another right hand.
"Ah...!"
Goerge zoomed past his partner, leaping into the air and swung his sword in a wide arc. A heat wave shot out from the sword, hurtling towards the bandits in their path.
BOOM....!
The strike tore into the ground, sending debris flying. However, the bandits weren’t idiots. They knew when to evade when necessary, rendering the attack useless.
But that was okay; the attack was meant to clear their path.
"Come on!"
George urged his partner as they pushed forward, employing skilful manoeuvring techniques to dodge the arrows that rained from above.
"Urge!"
An arrow found its way into George’s shoulders, sending him skidding across the hard ground. The man cursed as he managed to turn around to see another rain of arrows coming his way.
"George!"
His partner abruptly appeared before him and spun around, conjuring a strong gust of swirling wind that acted as a barrier against the arrows.
Henry knew it wasn’t going to be enough to stop the spells that were coming next. His head snapped back to see how much distance they had left.
’Not much.’ Henry estimated and turned around once more. ’Pray we don’t survive that fall, bandits!’ He glared at the boss above who observed everything with a grin.
BOOM...!!!
The spells collided with the swirling wind, generating a powerful gust that complimented Henry’s spell, sending them flying over the ledge.
"Fuck...!"
One of the bandits yelled as they rushed to the edge. They watched their target free fall from a deadly height of over 269 meters towards the thick canopy of trees down below.
"Hehe, this is good." The leader chuckled, drawing the attention of his men. "Looks like we have a hunt on our hands. Contact the others down there to set up a perimeter. We’ll be joining them soon."
"Yes, boss."
The bandits quickly prepared to descend themselves while the man walked towards the edge, his sharp gaze locked on the spot the two men fell to. freewёbnoνel.com
’Hm?’ The man narrowed his eyes when he noticed something strange. ’Where is this grey mist coming from?’
Just underneath the canopies and barely visible was a grey mist that was slowly expanding to cover much of the forest below.
It was strange and also the first time the boss saw the mist. The sun was high up in the sky and there was no monster he recalled having this kind of ability.
’It can’t be those two. They’re too injured and almost spent.’ The man pondered. ’This could be the doing of their targets.’
"Have you gotten in touch with our people down there?" The boss asked his subordinates.
"Yes, boss. Everything is going according to plan. They just made mention of some grey mist appearing out of nowhere. Other than that, there’s no issue."
"Tell everyone to keep their guard up once we reach down there. There could be others around."
"Yes, boss."
The subordinate didn’t delay and went to spread the word, leaving the boss to his thoughts. The man turned to look down once more, and the more he looked, the more a certain feeling emerged in his heart.
’Hehe, this could be fun.’ The man flashed a predatory grin. ’It’s been a while since I’ve had a decent challenge.’
Looking over his shoulder, he saw his men begin their descent, the excitement in their eyes visible to all. Just like he was, his men were thrilled about their upcoming hunt.
’Let the hunt begin!’
