Freedom Jumper-Chapter 112: Interrupted Dinner
Chapter 112 - Interrupted Dinner
Slowly and cautiously flying over a bright green marshland littered with small waterfalls, small cave entrances, and tall mountainous plateaus that broke the normalcy of the biome was Elijah searching for a satiating meal. Anything, anything that did not use a poison affinity was on the table.
There!
Trotting and sniffing around in a pack of at least seven was what looked like a wolf. However, there was an ominous premonition that came with staring at its muscular body and long fangs that protruded from the sides of its snout.
'What could it be searching for?'
Suddenly, a growling sound began to sputter from the pack leader, and moments later, the pack began running and jumping down the waterfalls and muddy grasslands. As Elijah was flying through the air – following the pack to the best of his ability – he noticed a mist that began to cover everything in the vicinity.
"Could this be magic?"
Fortunately for Elijah, he chose to observe a new beast before engaging in a fight against it. When the thick mist cleared, there were nothing but different patches of blood in between a grouping of thick trees, and not a single sign of a wolf.
Elijah decided it was time to pull something out of storage he had not used in a long time. His reason for avoiding it was because life became too easy. He wanted to struggle to get this meal as if he felt like he deserved to struggle. The runes of invisibility were quickly wrapped around his different body parts, and within a matter of seconds, the light that made Elijah visible to the world disappeared...
Swimming through the trees, around the mountain plateaus, and dipping his hand in the lukewarm water of several different waterfalls brought attention to his invisible figure by the same wolves. However, their attentions shifted from something they had not laid eyes on to a familiar frost elk that froze the ground underneath him with every step. Elijah questioned how a beast like this would survive in the hot seasons.
Once again, the mist spread like a wildfire that came from the wolves who were gunning for their prey. Elijah was directly above the action, and all he could hear were the paws of the wolves pattering against the puddles, their gnawing growls, and the silence of the elk that seemed to never put up a fight. This fact made Elijah hesitant to step into the unknown, but still, he acted.
His first began to glow while retaining his invisible cloak, and with a single punch to the head of a beast munching on its dinner, its head was pulverized into nothing.
Bam!
OWOOOOOO!
Instantly, it felt like Elijah had become dizzy from something that had been mixing with the mist – or perhaps the mist itself. With the last of his effort, he blasted through the trees while tearing two of his invisible runes off his body. Everything had happened so fast! There had to be an explanation.
"Shit! How am I supposed to contend against that?" Elijah questioned while shoving the four invisible runes into his storage bracelet. Just when he thought he was safe from any magical spells, the same mist that had allowed these tactful wolves to easily kill their prey was sprayed in the direction of Elijah.
While confidently backing away, Elijah began shuttling mana in his body just in case these wolves had the strength of gorgons. An ethereal glow began to course through every cell in his body, and with a powerful strike into the air in front of him, the mist scattered revealing a wolf that had jumped as far as it could go.
An attempt at suicide was made as when the wolf had landed from jumping thirty feet into the air, its limbs cleanly broke apart into pieces causing hoarse crying sounds to paint a picture of sadness in the wolf's mates.
The body of the wolf he had previously culled had not been seen in its original place, so Elijah took a risk by speedily driving down into the pack. A performance that was clearly unexpected caused them to run instead of fighting. However, not a single wolf was quick enough to escape as the slopes of the marshlands were covered with steep drops and an uneven surface that only allowed anyone to dream of running in a straight line.
Bam! Bam!
Elijah went from wolf to wolf, consecutively slaying each one.
"Hah! Their mana must have run out."
After picking up the shiny metallic runes that were hanging on the branches of a thin and leaf covered tree, Elijah grabbed two wolf corpses and flew back to his tree. However, Niko and Elijah did not need two wolf corpses to fill their stomachs. Instead, he laid one underneath the tree as bait to any animal daring enough to act on a plainly obvious shortcut that they would likely never see again.
"Elijah! That didn't take very long." Niko was peeking his head out of the hole of the tree only meant for two. Slowly, Elijah carved away more at the inside of the tree to make room for more space. The only option was to cook the wolf inside the tree as the rainstorm was nearing closer.

"Did you do what I asked?"
"Why don't you look up and see?" Niko had a small smile on his face while pointing to the ceiling. Above both of them was a hole that gave them the small amount of light left in the day. This hole would act as a chimney while also keeping the water out as the hole slowly curved to the side of the tree. Niko had taken his time with condensed fire to instantly create the shape he wanted while avoiding a fire. If there was a fire, Niko would have screamed at the top of his lungs for help, and Elijah would have come to save the day...
The crackling of the embers were created rather quickly which resulted in the gratitude from Niko. After a long hour of watching the broken apart pieces of wolf meat be cooked to a brown color, Elijah and Niko began to dig in. The taste was not horrendous, but did not appeal to either of them. However, both were hungry as one could be which caused them to brush over the small downside with ease.
"How do you think the marshlands will look after this storm?"
"Not too sure, but I assume I will be flying you everywhere as long as you don't want to soil our limited clothing even further..." Elijah was solely focused on his meal, and even slightly annoyed by his questions.
Thump!
The tree they were holed up inside suddenly shook for an unknown reason causing Elijah to drop his wolf thigh. Instead of taking his anger out on Niko, he understood the situation and asked Niko to create two illusions to scale the tree. Based on the noise, this would help them figure out the severity of the likely beast.
"Are you kidding me?" Elijah said while listening to the chattering noise the beast made.
"What? Have you heard that sound before?"
"That is the sound of a gorgon Niko. I have no idea if you have seen those before in The Catacombs, but even they can kill a cyan core mage depending on the affinity they were facing off against..." The rest of the wolf thigh was shoved into his mouth after picking it off the pile of leaves sitting on top of the tree trunk. "Stay here, I will deal with it."
Niko's face lost its flavor. "What, do you think I can't help you? Am I weak?"
"No, but sometimes the beasts that live in this world far transcend what is humanly possible even with magical affinities. That beast will catapult itself towards your body before you even spoke a single word. Trust me, I do not want you to die."
"And you think that I don't feel the same way!! You are the same person as me Elijah!"
Elijah understood his argument, but the simple fact was how Elijah was far more superior now than any human to the point where it puts him on par with the natural innate abilities of even the most terrifying beasts. The only drawback being that if he also took even a single hit from this beast, he would very likely die...
