"I am maxed out. Let's move." Elijah opened his eyes with the feeling of his dark orange mana core filled to the brim with mana. During the time of absorption, he had finished healing his injuries as best as water could, but still felt the lingering sensation of his bones crying with every movement. Elijah needed large amounts of calcium as soon as possible – preferably from eggs shells or milk.
"It won't take me long to create the illusion, so just sit tight for a minute."
"What about the clone you created?" Elijah saw what had happened before he dealt a destructive blow to the earth mage.
"I uhhh... I stole this power from the god. He was a powerless laughing stock who seemed to think he was invincible. After I stole his illusion ability, he told me I had stolen something more but didn't explain what."
"Interesting. Well that was a clone that allowed us to survive. Maybe once you progress through the core stages, you will be able to control the clone."
"Yea that is true. But we don't even know if these powers relate to mana cores. They come from the gods and are nothing like the elements. Your ability to fly is unlimited!!"
"You are partially right, Niko. My god told me the elements were never used for combat between the gods, but to maintain balance of the different worlds they traveled to. I think to us humans, they relate to the mana core. But for the gods, it may be wildly different..." The information exchanged between Niko and Elijah answered some questions both of them had, but created more questions to be solved.
From the outline of Elijah's body were three slightly translucent copies. These were by no means clones as they had decided to conserve mana as much as possible while going for a distraction that would cause any intelligent beast to stop and think for a couple of seconds. That was all they needed – a small distraction to buy a few seconds while Elijah carried Niko through the air at speeds he had never achieved before.
WHOOSH!
While the distraction did go according to plan, the multiple tentacle void beasts had noticed instantly and began using inhuman strength to catapult themselves into the air.
"BEHIND US!!" Niko was being held in a position that allowed him to see behind them. Their bodies were in a tight hug while Elijah was solely focused on speeding through the air.
BAM!
A shadow was seen moving at speeds unthinkable and the next thing they both felt was a hot liquid splattering against their clothes and disintegrating the already soiled and ripped garments they had scraped away with from The Underworld.
Niko nearly slipped out of Elijah's grasp as their speed increased while entering the forest. Thick piles of leaves were constantly slapping the face of Elijah and Niko until they halted from exhaustion. Their breaths were nonexistent the moment the quintessence bird had rendered the void beast to nothing but dismembered matter.
"WATCH OUT!"
A blob of green sticky liquid passed by the head of Niko just as they changed their position in mid air.
"NO! You will draw attention!" Elijah was quickly traversing in between trees while staring at a dotted salamander-like creature – purple and green which resemble poison.
Water materialized into thin air – drawing the beast that was crawling higher up the overgrown tree. Quickly, it was over, but the distraction caused them to forget about the void beast's blood. It was eating away at their clothes bit by bit, and when touching the skin, eroded the skin cells turning them purple.
"Elijah you need to cover us in water!"
"I know!"
All kinds of despicable and harmless sounds were heard echoing off the thick trunks of the trees while Elijah and Niko were holed up inside a man-made owl hole Elijah had slowly made using water magic. His water formed into a sharper blade than he remembered, and alongside erosion, a comfortable home was created that shielded them from the would-be insects crawling within the tree, and the outside dangers looming below and maybe even above.
A near perfect view of their past was just barely in sight through the gaps in between the towering trees. Shimmering with radiance was a golden glow that created a half-circle around what he would call a false paradise. And surrounding that false paradise was a broken and beaten wall – the edges of a prison.
Conversations about the good times they had experienced within the Kingdom of Astraea were exchanged. Phenomenal dinners, walks to the Grand Park, a quiet life in the outer region, and the beginnings of their journey to power. Of course the kingdom was fake and filled with people who wanted them both dead, but that isn't to say good memories were never made. Elijah barely remembers his early childhood, but only anything after his first visit to Centerpool. To Elijah, that was when his life in this new world had truly started. When his brain was somewhat capable of storing the vast amounts of memories of information sitting silently in his brain. And when he realized the truth of a part of him not accepting any of this was real, but a dream, no... a nightmare he got pulled into the second he had died.
"So Niko, do you want to take our time and plan out our entrance into the kingdom? We will have to blend in with society and likely create our identities..."
"I agree, we need a plan. And I also think it would be a good idea to create a safe haven inside of a tree just like this, but closer to the kingdom. We need a place to hide from a kingdom that we have barely a clue about."
"Yes. And I feel like this kingdom will be quite developed. After all, we are not the first people to be reincarnated into this world..."
...
Bam!
From behind a tree, Elijah's slightly glowing fist surprised a salamander that was likely mating with another of its kind. Its blood splashed onto Elijah's hand causing him to instantly be shocked by the pain, but was quickly healed from his water magic.
Who knew what beasts were on ground level. For now, it was best if Elijah and Niko did not find out as the end of the forest was approaching – a forest filled with towering and thick trees that sloped down a sometimes steep and sometimes light decline.
Elijah's assumption of being way above sea level was correct. With the information from Esulith about their being a war that likely created the void, his assumption was whatever bore that hole into the earth caused the landscape to rise with the creation of the nearly infinite number of cave systems that inhabit The Catacombs.
"Still the same beasts?" Niko asked when he saw Elijah swiftly fly into the giant hole in the tree with a perfect view of the hilly marshlands they were to enter next.
"Yea, nothing edible... The moment we find an edible beast, our hunger will cease to exist from how adept I am at wilderness survival. Just make sure to keep an eye on our surroundings and yell if danger is approaching. I promise I will be back with food..." Elijah and Niko had decided that if they could not find any source of food within the forest, they would resort to venturing into the hilly marshlands filled with steaming pools of water, and even pockets of lava that sat comfortably in a bed of stone. Geysers were also present that would provide a cover for any loud noise Elijah may have to make. The only downside was the lack of trees that only appeared every so often and in small sizes.
Difficult and timely would be the journey to be made. However, it would also challenge and occupy their minds.
Elijah needed that considering he couldn't get his dead friends out of his head while being tortured within The Underworld. Maybe new friends would be on the to-do list, but the fear of uselessness came into his mind as not a single person would be able to relate to him like Niko.
