Chapter 63: Chapter 62: Lord System Unlocked

Wandering Beasts were a massive threat to any city or tribe. A Wandering Beast in heat that hadn’t found a mate was an absolute catastrophe!

The Beastman Warriors stared intently at the approaching Snake Beast. The terrifying aura radiating from the Sixth Rank Wandering Beast made their legs go weak.

But when they saw the Snake Beast holding the slender female, their fear turned to fury. Their hackles rose like angry porcupines!

"ROAR—"

A chorus of bestial growls rose and fell, intended to drive the Wandering Beast away.

Given the situation, letting Mi Yin into the city was out of the question. If he took even one more step forward, the enraged Beastmen would swarm and attack him.

Whether they could win was another matter entirely.

As a Wandering Beast who had lived a primitive, savage life in the Primitive Jungle since he was young, Mi Yin had no fondness for the communal living of cities or tribes. It was too restrictive for his wandering nature.

An Jin was simply worried that his wounds might reopen in the harsh wilderness. She much preferred for him to recuperate in the safety of a city for a while.

If Mi Yin could adapt to communal life, she wouldn’t have to worry about the risk of him kidnapping her again after she came of age.

The two were forced to retreat to the city’s outskirts. An Jin leaned against a tree, kicked at a pebble, and sighed. "Is there really no other way?"

The long, cool fingers resting on her hair paused.

’He has a way?!’

An Jin was certain of it. She looked up expectantly at the silent Mi Yin, only to see him give a soft, noncommittal chuckle. The cool, smooth pad of his finger landed on her cheek, stroking it again and again.

He seemed to be hesitating about something.

After a long moment, he finally spoke, his deep voice betraying no emotion. "Wandering Beasts are forbidden from entering the city because they snatch females. If you tell them you’re my mate, they might not stop us..."

An Jin hesitated for a moment, then turned and ran toward the city. But unexpectedly, he grabbed her wrist, twisting his arm back to catch her.

His grip was shockingly strong.

She gave him a strange look over her shoulder. Mi Yin’s eyes were downcast, the curved shadows of his lashes concealing the wild emotions in their depths, yet a hint of sorrow and unease still peeked through.

But the next second, he let her go.

As he stared at the female’s figure shrinking into a blurry black dot in the distance, the panic and apprehension Mi Yin had tried so hard to hide were laid completely bare.

In his inherited memories, many Snake Beasts were tricked and killed by their mates.

Because females resented the Snake Beasts who had abducted them, they would lure them into cities with promises of a life together, then secretly find powerful Beastmen to gang up on and kill the Wandering Snake Beast...

’Will Jin’er... abandon me like that, too?’

But a moment later, he saw the female running back alone, panting heavily. There were no other suspicious Beastmen behind her.

Mi Yin’s red pupils widened, his heart pounding furiously in his chest as an indescribable emotion surged through him.

Before An Jin could even stop to catch her breath, hands on her hips, the typically cold and ruthless Snake Beast seemed to lose control again. He swept her into his arms, holding her tight, and buried his head in the crook of her neck to take a deep breath. "Jin’er, I’m so happy..."

She hadn’t abandoned him.

The thing he had feared most hadn’t happened.

An Jin, "...??" She couldn’t fathom why Mi Yin’s emotions were suddenly in such turmoil. She peeled his long arms off her and glanced at the closed city gates, sighing with regret. "It’s no use. You’re a Sixth Rank Wandering Beast; they won’t let you in."

A Sixth Rank Beastman’s power was on par with a City Lord’s. If one entered the city, it would cause widespread panic among the Beastmen and disrupt the peace.

Mi Yin didn’t care. He had seen An Jin’s true intentions, so whether he could enter the city or not was completely irrelevant to him now.

He took the female’s hand, walked her to a spot not far from the city gate, and stopped. He let go, his gaze full of longing as he watched her enter the city.

"I’ll be right here waiting for you. I won’t leave."

"Okay."

She nodded, glanced at his wounds, and gave him a few words of caution before she left.

The moment she entered the city, a few Beastmen from the nearby Luoten Tribe spotted An Jin. They rubbed their eyes and then rushed over in disbelief.

When they confirmed that the slender, familiar figure was indeed An Jin, who had been missing for days, their eyes reddened and they nearly burst into tears. "Oh my god, you’re not dead!"

An Jin, "...??"

’What are they talking about?’ She was a little confused.

The group scratched their heads awkwardly and quickly explained. The last great fire had spread through half the forest. Many of their Beastmen had been burned, and a few were even permanently disabled.

The other tribes hadn’t fared much better.

The fire had killed several Beastmen. They had searched everywhere for An Jin but couldn’t find her, so they assumed she had also...

They wiped away their tears and said happily, "It’s so good that you’re okay! We have to tell Lord Ling Hong and the others right away."

"You know so many new things, and you returned safely from the great fire. Maybe you really are the legendary female blessed by the Beast God!"

A series of chaotic system notifications suddenly rang out in her mind. ’The Lord System? It doesn’t seem very useful to me right now.’

’The only resident... could that be me?’

An Jin rubbed her throbbing temples and looked behind them. "Where are the others? Where is Ling Hong?"

The group’s faces filled with grief and indignation. The fire had injured many Beastmen in the tribe. Most of them were at the Witch Doctor Castle, including Ling Hong.

"We’ll take you there!"

...

「Dawn broke, and a new day began.」

Chi Li was once again trapped in a nightmare from his childhood. He curled up under the soft animal hides, his eyes shut tight, his entire body soaked in a cold sweat. Darkness, fear, vexation, and resentment enveloped him layer by layer.

Overwhelming hatred filled his chest, flowing through every inch of his body. His sharp fingertips tore through the animal hide, clenching and ripping it bit by bit...

When he startled awake from the nightmare, he was already drenched in sweat.

Chi Li buried his head in his knees, as if he could still feel that disgusting touch crawling all over him, defiling his pride inch by excruciating inch.

In the dream, he was just a seven or eight-year-old cub.

His hands were tied in a pitch-black wooden hut.

From the room next door came the impassioned sounds of a male and a female, filling him with unprecedented terror.

The door opened. An ugly, disgusting old female appeared before him, giving him a sinister smile.

Tears streamed down, blurring his vision...

"Sob... y-you, don’t touch me..."

"..."

Countless scars still remained on Chi Li’s jade-white skin. He glanced at them out of the corner of his eye, merely knitting his long, fiery-red eyebrows. His expression was unreadable.

Despite the hot and humid warm season, he stubbornly insisted on wearing a long robe made of tanned animal hide, which barely concealed the shocking scars on his body.
