Chapter 159: Chapter 121: The Wolf’s Thoughts and a Belated Confession (3)

Eating more fruits, vegetables, and carrots would not only provide vitamins to prevent her skin from getting dry and chapped, but they could also be used to make some light vegetable soup for a change of pace.

Ling Hong watched the female’s face flush red as she lay on the ground, struggling to pull out a small tuber. She then used her beast-hide sleeve to wipe the dirt off of it.

She cupped the carrot in her hands, raised it to her pale lips, and took a small bite.

"Ooh~" ’It’s delicious! So crisp and sweet, just like I remember!’ 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚

Seeing how happily she was eating, Ling Hong couldn’t help but smile, and he quickened his pace to dig up more carrots for An Jin.

He normally didn’t eat tubers, but after seeing her frequently eat them and various leafy greens, he started keeping an eye out for them during his hunts.

Just two days ago, he had noticed many long-eared rabbits gathering here to dig, and he happened to glimpse these red tubers.

Ling Hong had tried a bite and found it tasted pretty good, so he guessed that An Jin would like them too.

The Silver Wolf dug up the entire surrounding patch of snow.

Soon, he had a pile almost half a person high.

Luckily, An Jin had brought a large wicker basket, and they packed all the carrots they had dug inside, filling it to the brim.

"It’s too heavy! I never thought we’d find so many. If I’d known, I would have asked a few more Beastmen to come with us." Panting, she put a hand on her lower back, completely unable to lift the basket.

"I’m here. I’m strong enough to carry it." The Silver Wolf shifted into his human form. The strong, well-built, silver-haired man easily lifted the basket with one hand, then casually wrapped his other arm around her.

Seeing that the female’s small hands were bright red and ice-cold from the freezing weather, a hint of tenderness colored Ling Hong’s dark green eyes. "It’s my fault. I wasn’t thinking. I didn’t realize it would be this cold for you. I should have told you to wear more layers."

His large, fiery hand gently enveloped her small, frozen one.

This was a warmth Gu Yin had never possessed.

"..." An Jin blinked. Tilting her lovely face upward, she could only see the man’s sharp, exquisitely defined jawline.

She froze for a moment.

A strange feeling bloomed in her heart.

She instinctively tried to pull her hand from his, but in this damn, freezing weather, she found herself reluctant to let go of Ling Hong’s scorching warmth.

’Did he really just bring me here to dig for carrots?’

The two of them had spent quite a while digging. It had already been late afternoon when they set out, and the long journey had taken a considerable amount of time. Now, the sky was growing dark.

Their surroundings were a vast expanse of white as the sky dimmed, and the fresh snow quickly covered the footprints they had left behind.

"There should be some caves nearby. How about... we find one to spend the night in?" Ling Hong suggested hesitantly, sneaking a glance at her.

Afraid the female would refuse, his heart began to pound in his chest.

An Jin looked up at him again. "..."

Ling Hong was the cold and upright type, but he wasn’t very good at hiding his emotions. An Jin could practically see the words written across his face.

’I want to be alone with you.’

’What is he trying to pull?’

An Jin glanced at the sky. It was indeed getting very late. Traveling at night would make them vulnerable to ambushes from wild animals. And while she felt perfectly safe with Ling Hong by her side, she didn’t like asking for trouble.

"Alright. Let’s look for one nearby, not too far away," she said with a nod.

Ling Hong’s joy was plain to see. He transformed into an agile Silver Wolf and, carrying An Jin and the basket of carrots, sprinted toward a cave in the forest.

There was some scattered, dry firewood in the cave. ’It seems he stays here whenever he’s out hunting too late to return home,’ she thought.

The bonfire in the cave flickered, its incessant CRACKLE and POP echoing as tongues of flame licked at the earthen walls.

Noticing An Jin pout and rub her stomach, Ling Hong quickly went out and returned with two long-eared rabbits he had caught.

Thanks to the trial-by-fire of feeding the picky female, his culinary skills had become more and more refined, to the point where the student had surpassed the master.

In a few deft movements, he skinned the prey, cleaned out the entrails, and broke the tender meat down into several large chunks. He then skewered them on branches and began roasting them over the bonfire.

He didn’t add much seasoning, roasting the meat simply as it was.

Ling Hong’s control over the roasting flame was masterful. He soon had the two adorable long-eared rabbits cooked to perfection—crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The skin sizzled as fat rendered from it, whetting the appetite.

An Jin took a bite. ’Huh, this is actually pretty good!’

The plain, roasted meat wasn’t as stunning as her usual seasoned fare, but its strength lay in the cook’s exquisite skill. The meat itself was firm, yet tender and delicious.

After they had eaten and drunk their fill, the sky outside was completely black. From time to time, the howls of wild beasts echoed in the distance.

The cave was well-hidden, its entrance covered by numerous vines and thorns. Plus, she had the powerful Ling Hong by her side.

An Jin wasn’t worried about danger. She snuggled into the thick beast hides and yawned, her eyes welling with sleepy tears.

Even with the bonfire, the bitter cold was pervasive, and the inside of the cave was still bone-chilling.

"I... I can hold you while we sleep. I’m really warm..."

The Silver Wolf obediently lay down beside the female, its massive, warm, furry body pressing close against her.

Seeing An Jin’s face turn pale from the cold, he instinctively reached out a paw and pulled her into the warm fur of his belly.
