Chapter 30: Chapter 30: Brother Pei’s Agarwood.

After recognizing Qin Fang, Shen Zhiyi’s first reaction was to look beside him, unable to find the person she wanted to see, she smiled helplessly.

Having encountered him by chance so often, she actually thought she could see him again this time.

Meng Fansheng caught the motion of her looking in Qin Fang’s direction and asked quietly, “Do you know Mr. Xiaoqin?”

It couldn’t really be considered as knowing him, Shen Zhiyi was actually just deeply impressed by his few words of “Brother Pei,” she shook her head gently, “No, I don’t know him.”

“It’s the junior Mr. Qin from Dongqi.”

The reason he was called junior Mr. Qin was naturally because his father had not truly retired yet, but with no other children but him, the old auto company Dongqi would sooner or later be taken over by him.

Shen Zhiyi was curious, “Is he related to Mr. Qin—”

With Qin Fang present, Qin Fangru’s title as “Mr. Qin” could not be claimed.

“A distant relative, but Qin Fangru serves Pei’s interests.”

The Qin and Pei families had been close since the previous generation, and with Qin Fang and Pei Yu, the connection between the two families had become even more intimate.

This also indicated that the private relationship between the two was indeed good.

Meng Fansheng knew that Shen Zhiyi rarely attended such events before and didn’t know many people, and was intent on introducing her to a few more people, to save her from unintentionally offending someone again.

“Let’s go, I’ll introduce you to a few directors. As for this Mr. Qin, if you run into him, don’t be too attentive, to avoid another misunderstanding.”

Knowing that Shen Zhiyi was not that kind of person, but still needing to say what should be said, Qin Fang was frivolous and debauched, and he might misinterpret her actions.

Shen Zhiyi nodded obediently and didn’t look back anymore.

On the other hand, Qin Fang gave her a few more glances, for no other reason than that she was too eye-catching, with a Suzhou-embroidered cheongsam accentuating her slender waist, giving her a unique charm.

Seeing him look over, Qin Fangru was about to sweat from anxiety and quickly changed the subject, “I heard that Boss Fu is here, in one of the private rooms inside.”

Only then did Qin Fang start walking, “Let’s go, let’s see Boss Fu.”

The threshold for this charity event was quite high, so Shen Zhiyi was somewhat surprised to see Xu Xia there, unsure of who she had come with.

“A friend?”

Meng Fansheng glanced over in that direction but didn’t recognize her.

“We worked together,” Shen Zhiyi withdrew her gaze and greeted several directors, inevitably getting a touch of alcohol, but Meng Fansheng was taking care of her, and no one dared to blame her for drinking too little.

Soon after, Xu Xia came over as well. Since she was there to network, naturally, she would not miss the opportunity to make conversation.

“Sister Zhiyi,” Xu Xia inconspicuously moved to her side and whispered, “I heard from Brother Huo that it was you who took that stab for him.”

Her glance at Shen Zhiyi’s shoulder was subtle yet insinuating, “Although I’m very thankful to you, by doing this, aren’t you just making Brother Huo even more unable to let you go?”

Shen Zhiyi saw her naive face, she frowned as if in reproach, “Brother Huo has been restless the past few days, feeling terrible guilt toward you. Are you using such tactics to make men completely devoted to you…”

“Xu Xia,” Shen Zhiyi’s tone was very light, even carrying a hint of a smile, “in what capacity are you speaking to me like this?”

She leaned in slightly, “As Huo Heng’s girlfriend?”

“Would you dare admit it?”

Three years ago, she was a popular idol, and for the sake of her career, she chose to conceal her relationship. Three years later, she shifted to acting, but still used that reason to refuse going public. How could she dare admit that status?

Xu Xia bit her lip, pressed into silence by the questioning.

Of course, she dared not admit it; being Huo Heng’s girlfriend was a status she had to keep in the dark.

“You say Huo Heng can’t let go of me?” Shen Zhiyi said with faint scorn, “What does that have to do with me? You should be accusing your unfaithful boyfriend, not me.”

“Now,” Shen Zhiyi handed her a glass of wine, expressionless, “apologize to me.”

Not far away, Qin Fang strode out of the private room, his gaze quickly finding Shen Zhiyi’s position and then resting on Xu Xia beside her, his eyebrows furrowing harshly as he hurried over.

“What’s the matter?”

He stood beside Shen Zhiyi, the question was directed at Xu Xia, his tone slightly heavy, carrying a deterrence only Xu Xia would understand.

His reason for coming here was to keep Shen Zhiyi safe; if Shen Zhiyi suffered any grievances at the hands of Xu Xia, Qin Fang wouldn’t be able to explain himself.

Xu Xia bit her lip, looked up to meet Shen Zhiyi’s indifferent and calm gaze, and saw the warning in Qin Fang’s eyes, knowing she had no other choice.

She downed the glass of wine, “I’m sorry.”

“Miss Shen,” Qin Fang no longer glanced at Xu Xia, gesturing with his hand, “Come sit in the private room for a while; the charity event is about to start.”

He walked a step behind, casting a cold glance at Xu Xia, silently mouthing a message: Don’t touch Shen Zhiyi.

Why should she?

Xu Xia clenched her hand, having aimed to get close to Qin Fang upon discovering that he was the powerful figure behind Shen Zhiyi, and now she had succeeded, yet Qin Fang’s attitude toward Shen Zhiyi hadn’t changed in the slightest.

They were both playthings; why was she so special?

Upon being invited to the private room by Qin Fang, Shen Zhiyi realized Meng Fansheng wasn’t there; this didn’t seem to be a place she should be.

The spacious private room was decorated in a classical Chinese style, the acid-branch wood sofa was delicately carved, arrayed around a tea table on three sides, at the head sat two young men, one stern and the other handsome, a painting of flowers and birds directly behind them.

Seeing Shen Zhiyi, Fu Songzhi’s eyebrows slightly furrowed, not understanding what Qin Fang was thinking by bringing a woman here, while Qin Fang appeared somewhat amused, lounging with legs crossed as if anticipating a good show.

Shen Zhiyi took a step back, nodded apologetically, and was about to leave, startled by the discordant atmosphere which was clearly out of place for her.

“Miss Shen, please sit here,” Qin Fang stopped her from leaving, as if he couldn’t look after her if she strayed too far.

With Qin Fang’s determined attitude, Shen Zhiyi felt it would be rude to refuse, so she sat down under the scrutinizing eyes of the other people in the private room. For some reason, she paid particular attention to the screen in the corner, always wary that someone might be hiding there.

Because of Shen Zhiyi’s arrival, the atmosphere in the private room became tense. Fu Songzhi was already displeased, ready to drag Qin Fang out to demand an explanation, while Qin Fang was curiously pushing a glass of wine towards her, “Your last name is Shen?”

If she knew what was good for her, she would drink the wine now and give her name, but perhaps it was the earlier mention of “Brother Pei” that made Shen Zhiyi less wary of him compared to others. She shook her head and said, “I can’t really drink today.”

Rejected?

Qin Fang paused momentarily, his smile fading. He leaned in closer and suddenly said, “What if I told you that you must drink––”

As he drew near, he caught the scent of agarwood mixed with the perfume, its presence overpowering. Qin Fang tensed abruptly, his pupils shaking violently, unable to utter the words he had intended.

How could he not recognize Brother Pei’s scent of agarwood?

Thinking he was about to cause trouble, Shen Zhiyi hesitated for a moment before lifting her glass, ready to drink, while Qin Fang opened his mouth, intending to smooth things over.

“Wait!”

Qin Fang, his face muddled with confusion, called out to his friend in shock, “Songzhi, smell her scent!”

Fu Songzhi turned around, speechless, giving Qin Fang a look reserved for perverts, “If you want to play the rogue, go do it somewhere else.”
