Chapter 207: My sanity

If Leo did not turn out to be powerful, then Luciana would have used her powers on them but they were many and she was the only one with Esme in an unconscious state. Hence, their deaths were inevitable today.

’’You don’t even pity them...’’ Cardan clicked his tongue, ’’And I like it,’’ he mumbled under his breath in a voice so soft that she missed it.

Luciana had very little use for things like pity and conscience.

’’There are people I care about and there are people who don’t exist in my world. Unfortunately, they happened to be the latter.’’

’’Which one am I?" Cardan asked, stepping towards her. 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮

Luciana paused for a moment as she glanced at his face, ’’Why am I here in this room?’’ her disinterest to answer his question was apparent.

Cardan sighed, ’’My room is right next to your friend’s so rather than staying far away from her, I thought you would like to stay here.’’

Luciana glanced at him, touched, ’’I never knew you can be this considerate. Thank you. Where are you going to stay?"

’’What do you mean where? This is my room.’’

The touched expressions on her face faded gradually, ’’We are staying in one room?"

’’Unless you want me to send you to one of those distant rooms.’’

Luciana bit her bottom lips. She could easily share the room with Esme but that woman would throw her out as soon as she woke up. She had an aversion to people stepping inside her room and staying longer than necessary and that made her wonder how she stayed with Aleister for so long when they were yet to get married.

Or maybe it was her subconscious missing him and acting like this without a cause.

Luciana massaged her forehead. She did not want Esme to be left alone, ’’Sleep on the floor then,’’ she walked towards the bed.

Cardan’s brows nearly touched his hairline, ’’Taking advantage of my kindness?"

’’Just like you took advantage of the Daven Family’s kindness,’’ Luciana smiled, ’’I feel like I am avenging them,’’ She knew he could through her out of his room right at this moment, ’’I could have been a goddess of justice if something like that existed.’’

’’Whatever you want,’’ he said, walking towards the golden throne chair before he sat on it, crossing one leg above the other.

Her smile grew wider. Luciana did not know with what motive he was giving in to her, but she was going to vent her frustration on him anyway. As long as he was giving in to her.

’’Everyone is going to think of you as my new mistress.’’

The smile on her face died.

He smirked in victory.

Luciana gazed at him, ’’Or they will think of you as my kept man. As beautiful as I am, I can get any...’’ she snapped her fingers, emphasizing the ’any’ again as she continued, ’’...any man to do my bidding,’’ her green eyes sparkled.

His lips thinned.

Luciana smirked this time, not so kindly. She might not be some heavenly princess and she might not compare to him in terms of status or powers or even his immortality but if he believed that she was the weaker one here, then he would have to rethink it.

He could coerce or manipulate her into things but if she was going down, then she would make sure to drag one or two down with her. And the first person she would be taking down to hell with her is him.

With pleasure.

Luciana scoffed.

...

’’You are special to me too,’’ Esme whispered, stepping forward in the darkness.

’’You are the only thread of sanity in this insane life of mine. You... You are the only man I have ever adored,’’ she stumbled and fell but she stood up again, stepping forward in the darkness.

Her hand reached out to get hold of anything, ’’Please... I beg you...’’

No one responded.

’’Please..’’

’’Please!’’

’’Don’t go!"

Her voice grew desperate with every passing moment.

"No!"

Esme sat up on the bed, her chest heaving up and down as she panted.

Her trembling palm reached towards her face and she felt the dampness on her cheeks.

Under the pale glow of the moonlight and the candles that illuminated the dark room, the pearls on her pillow sparkled faintly.

The memories of her dream were growing faint. All she remembered was she was standing inside a dark room and she was reaching out for someone.

Esme inhaled a few deep breaths, wiping her face with the back of her palm.

Only then did she notice her unfamiliar surroundings.

This was not the castle of the Defire Kingdom.

Her gaze landed on the two trunks lying beside the round bed.

And she remembered everything that happened.

Luciana pushed her inside the portal before jumping inside.

Esme... felt sick in there and she remembered pinching Luciana’s hand who kept screaming and yelling in pain along with her fearful screams.

And as ugly as it got... she did not remember when they reached the other side or what happened after that.

’’Lucy?’’ Esme looked around, ’’Leo?"

Esme removed the sheets aside off her body and walked out of the room.

Was this the Dark Castle?

She could not help but wonder as she roamed in the empty hallways.

The hallways were illuminated by the starlight invading through the floor-to-ceiling windows but there was darkness stemming from the walls.

The eeriness made her wonder if the light ever grazed past this place?

Was this why this place was called the dark castle?

Because it was dark?

Or would it light up when it’s daytime?

With numerous questions in her mind, Esme kept looking around for any signs of Leo and Luciana. They did not abandon her here.... did they?

She would believe it for once if Luciana abandoned her but Leo... was different.

Esme sighed, feeling slightly guilty for thinking about Luciana in that way. Luciana was her only friend.

But Leo was special. She could not explain her feelings for him but she knew that she could close her eyes and turn her back towards him yet he would not sink his claws in there regardless of what she did to him.

It was strange but Esme always believed her instinct.

And as she moved further into the darker hallways, her instinct was telling her to throw her curiosity aside and go back to where she came from.

Esme paused in her tracks, contemplating. There were no guards in there and she did not think God would step down from his throne to punish her for her curiosity.

So, looking for Luciana and Leo while gaining some knowledge... cough.. about this mysterious place should be fine.

She was not probing at all.

And she had already walked around a few hallways. It would be bad if she turned around and left without finding anything.

Esme bit her bottom lips. These people are way too powerful and if she made a mistake, she would drag Luciana and Leo down with her.

Looking at the empty space reluctantly, she turned around to leave.
