Chapter 180: Burn the world

"Keep quiet, you both!" Marcus Norwell snapped at them, "It is time for us to work on our plans."

Luciana wanted to say something but she kept her mouth shut when her father focused his piercing glare on her.

"Princess," Marcus approached Esme carefully, having already witnessed her prowess. She even dared to go against a powerful existence like Marilyn who was only heard of in folklores. This woman was exceptional undoubtedly, "The late Prince wanted to..."

"Keep your mouth shut unless you want to die," Esme interrupted the man.

Marcus frowned, a chill ran down his spine when Esme raised her head to look at him, the pair of reddening eyes were horrifying, beautiful yet brutal.

"Late... Who do you think you are referring to?" Esme hugged Aleister in her arms protectively. She could not understand what these people were thinking. Yes, he was wounded and a little tired so he was resting. Why did they have to claim that he is no more?

They don’t know how powerful Aleister is but she knew. Even the young Aleister, who was just a little child fought off a pack of wolves, all by himself.

And he is much more powerful now. How could he possibly die!

She kissed Aleister’s hair, her tears tasted salty and she wiped them off with the back of her hand, not letting a single tear fall on the ground.

Aleister never liked it when she cried. He would not like it if he found himself waking up in a bed of pearls. And if he got angry, his recovery would slow down...

She had to be considerate about him. The King was no more.

If she did not look after Aleister at a time like this then who will?

"Princess, he is right," Rowan detested the Norwell Family but at this moment, he could not help but back the man’s word when he saw Esme’s abnormal condition.

She was losing her sanity. She was acting like she did not want to see what was right in front of her...

Suddenly, something strange happened, astounding everyone who witnessed the scene.

Aleister’s body started disappearing as a golden glow wrapped around him.

The one who was the most shocked was Esme, "No, what’s happening? Someone stop this..." she grabbed his hand desperately but he dispersed in thin air.

The place sunk in silence and except for Esme’s heavy breathing, one could not hear a single thing.

Esme slumped on the ground, recoiling at the realization that maybe she would never see her favorite pair of eyes again.

Marcus nodded at his children, "Princess, it’s time for you to go with us," He approached her.

Rowan unsheathed his sword, pressing the blade right against the man’s neck.

Leo roared.

With a snap of the man’s fingers, Rowan was sent flying away as his back crashed against the mirrored wall.

Marcus did not stop walking, not until he was squatting in front of Esme, "This Kingdom will be destroyed if you don’t agree to leave with us. Your lover’s Kingdom. Can you bear to watch it burn?"

Esme tilted her to look at the man, her emotionless eyes scanned his shrewd face. Her lips were dry and cracked as she opened her mouth to speak, "Do it. Burn the world. My world is gone," her tone was raspy and her eyes were dazed, "Nothing bothers me anymore."

Somewhere along the way, she felt like a part of her was no longer alive. The butterflies died. The delightful shivers died. The giddiness in her heart died. And she was dying too.

The only person who was truly hers in the world was gone.

He was hers and to think that she realized it so late.

She...wanted to close her eyes, to rest, maybe for a day, for a month, for a year, or forever.

She was not sure.

"You might not care about the world but what about the person whom Prince Aleister wanted to save before his death? Are you not going to fulfill the dying wish of your fiancee?"

To Marcus’s question, Esme tilted her head. Aleister’s dying wish?

Marcus snapped his finger and the mirrored wall flashed.

Esme followed the direction his fingers were pointing in.

"Duke Maverick. Poor thing," Marcus shook his head, "He is trapped in an illusion of his own fears and this spell is cast by a witch. Only I can break this spell and get this man out."

Esme looked at the man struggling in the fire. The fuzzy memories of the good days spent in this castle flashed in her mind.

’Little Princess, my nephew can be a bit willful at times but we all are here for you.’

’If he bothers you, just come to us.’

’Did you eat? Are you uncomfortable in this Castle?’

’We are a family...’

Duke Maverick...has been kind to her.

Aleister’s last words before he left her in the church library reverberated in her mind.

’I need to save him.’

Esme pushed herself to her feet, her footsteps staggered, and just when she thought she was going to fall, she felt a grip on her shoulder.

"Al—" The light in her eyes died when she noticed that it was Luciana looking at her with pity.

Esme shook off her hand and glanced at Marcus. 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶

"No, Princess... We will find a way to rescue the Duke. Don’t go with this man..."

Esme raised a hand, stopping Rowan from speaking any further, "How can I trust you?" She turned to look at Marcus. Her voice was hoarse but her eyes had regained clarity, "She said she is the most powerful witch then what makes you say that you can defeat her?"

"Not only me, but you can also defeat her too if you put your mind to it. Did you see how she ran away from you? People of our kind have been blessed with special powers..."

Our kind. So he was coming clean now. "What powers?" Esme asked nonchalantly.
