Chapter 909: A Thousand Year Dream (II)

--

Cain had forgotten all the terrible things he had seen a few days ago...

How can he not when he’s too busy having the time of his life right now?

Their new home was awesome. Sure, it wasn’t as huge and as grand as their old home, but it’s more than big enough for all five of them to use. The huge difference is that Cain doesn’t need help to explore it. He doesn’t need to be led by the hand to see where the rest of his family were. In just a few steps, he’d be able to see them.

What’s more important for Cain is that their new home is...warmer than the old one. He couldn’t explain it with his limited vocabulary; he just liked it better.

Things were easier here for him to understand, and his family were always within his reach. He now always wakes up not worrying where they are or what they’re doing; he doesn’t need to wait for a long time for them to visit him, which could span for weeks at minimum, if not months.

They all sit on the same table for breakfast, lunch, and dinner now more frequently than before. He always had someone to talk to. Cain feels closer to his family now more than ever, which made him glow positively in happiness.

And his happiness was all clear for everyone to see. So much so that it hurts, because, as it turns out, all Cain ever wanted was the constant presence of his family, something that should’ve been freely given, but he always lacked due to their previous disposition.

The worst part is that Cain never blamed any of them. They knew he could never do that. He never complained or anything; he just took what was given and resigned himself to be contented with it when, deep down, he wanted more.

Cain, in his immature and underdeveloped way, made an awful lot of concessions just so that he wouldn’t upset them. Even though he was well within his rights to expect and demand it out of them.

That hurts more than anything when they realize it.

Even more so when they knew that Cain never held any grudge about it. He could’ve, but he didn’t. He just accepted that that’s the way things are and moved on.

Seeing how happy he was now despite the barest minimum given made the family feel awful. But they hid it well, and instead of dwelling over it, they swore to make it up to him by constantly showering him with love.

And Cain absolutely loved that.

Every day he wakes up excited, far earlier than his alarm clock or before anybody could wake him. He greets everybody with a cheerful and energetic smile, always ready to face the day. He eats breakfast with them, then goes out and plays with his older brother and sister while his parents take care of their house and the fields they own. Sometimes, he would even help them in some ways he could.

Cain loved learning from them. He isn’t one of those kids that abhors studying. Sure, he often gets bored by it, but when he does it with his family, he ends up liking it a lot. He’s more engaged compared to his previous experiences.

Play, study, help with chores in little ways he can, talk with his family, eat with them, and rinse and repeat.

This was Cain and his family’s new life here. It’s monotonous, repetitive, and boring, but not to him. To Cain, this was the best time of his life, ever. And he never wanted it to end.

Sometimes, they’d break the routine to venture out of home and discover more of the world.

Beyond the hill where their new home stood and the fields that surrounded it was an even more boisterous, active, and beautiful world that was vibrant and filled with activity.

They’d go out from time to time for family day. Cain learned that his father and older brother sell their crops in the market for money they could spend for other stuff. They have no need for too much money; most of it they spend to replenish their stocks, and even then, they have too much left over.

And that’s even after buying extra decorations, toys, and other knicknacks available on the market.

But what really made Cain happy about this place was all the activities he could participate in here. There are games, stores, playgrounds, etc. It didn’t take him an hour during their first visit to make friends with other kids.

They played a lot, all until it was nearly nighttime, and only then were they forced to stop because they needed to go back home.

Cain was practically vibrating in excitement and happiness the entire time. So much so that he was absolutely drained by the time they went home; he couldn’t even keep his eyes open as they ate dinner, much to the amusement of his family.

He slept soundly that night and woke up just as energetic and excited as he was, raring to go at it again.

This was the kind of life that Cain lived in this world. And it didn’t take much convincing for him to call this paradise.

Besides, it wasn’t just him that was happy.

The rest of the family were happy and content too.

Pelle, with his temper under his control, is more amicable, smiles more, and is more charismatic than ever. It wasn’t just Cain who loved going out to socialize; he too found this new world of theirs exciting even in all of its simplicity.

All the things he did in the past, even his identity as the Bug Prince of War, are all too distant to him now. Hell, he couldn’t even see himself returning to that kind of miserable existence, and he hadn’t even been in this world for more than a year!

To Pelle, the simplicity of their new life wasn’t a disadvantage; it was the kind of bliss that he never thought was possible for someone like him.

And the best part? It’s his luck with the ladies.

Well, what can he say? As it turns out, without his ferocious and unstable temper, he was a ladies’ man. He liked getting their attention; he likes it when they look at him positively; he liked it when they praised him.

And it doesn’t take much for him to start thinking about marrying one for himself, and probably soon too.

Maricel was, more or less, the same. Her old life felt too distant now, and she was having an absolute blast with this new one.

And without the curse that deprived her of her fertility, she too was entertaining ideas of starting her own family.

She had always been jealous of her parents. Especially of her mother’s effortless manner of birthing children whenever she wanted to. She always thought that motherhood was a concept that would forever be out of her grasp. It just wasn’t the same when she was not involved.

Maricel always dreamt of having her own family: marrying the love of her life, carrying their child, and raising them. Hell, she wanted to have a lot of children if that were all possible, but having three as a minimum was a good start, just like her mother did.

She wants to see them grow up, achieve their dreams, see them start their own families, and eventually die in her sleep knowing that they’d be just fine after their departure.

For all her knowledge and wisdom, her dreams were surprisingly tame and normal. Who could’ve ever expected this from her?

As for Anuman, he was the most pleased.

For one, he could talk again. And he’s taking absolute advantage of that by constantly waxing poetic about his undying love for her gorgeous wife. He never ran out of things to tell her, never got tired of reassuring her that he never doubted or blamed her for everything that she did.

It had been a distant memory for a bug empress, but she was now reminded of how smooth and dangerous her husband’s words were when he could talk, as she constantly found herself shaming and blushing like a teenager whenever he whispered sweet nothings to her.

And he only reserved this for her. He barely talks when there are strangers around. Only she had the privilege to be at the receiving end of his nigh-constant praises, preachings, and sweet words.

Everything that he couldn’t express when he was cursed with silence was now being made up for with his newfound form and freedom. And he’s also not shy to express his love for her and her family using words of affirmation and action.

This new life of theirs was so peaceful, so serene, and so beautiful that even the Bug Empress was being ensnared by it.

This, all of it...wasn’t this all she ever wanted in the first place? Was it really so difficult for fate to give her this kind of simplicity?

Now, if only all of this was true, then it would definitely be even better.

But even though it wasn’t, somehow, the Bug Empress found herself unable to care. Her and her family’s happiness makes this more than worth it.
