Chapter 49: Imperial Decisions

Logan’s eyes shrank in shock. The writing that indicated a clear threat reminded him of his own and with it came memories of the duel.

Shaking his head vehemently, he managed to suppress the surge of images that tried to consume him.

The prince, on the other hand, appeared utterly distraught.

"What? Who? What’s going on?" He managed to ask after he recovered from shock.

"Now we know why the kingdom took you away from the castle and brought you somewhere remote. Something, or rather someone, is after you." Orion spoke as he looked at the writing.

At first, the possible culprit was Soul King, but upon further reasoning, that was quickly debunked.

Soul King was infinitely more intelligent and cunning than that.

They wouldn’t reveal themselves so easily unless they had an ulterior motive and as far as they could tell, there was none.

Not to mention that Soul King dealt with the grey energy of souls, while whoever was responsible for the threat seemed tied to blood.

"It seems that Prince-y here is in serious danger. My guess is that the kingdom has given up on him." Logan muttered to himself.

"The kingdom hasn’t given up on me." The young royal refuted.

"Oh yeah. Before you cling to false hope, tell me. Since you came here, have you received any message from the king or queen?" Logan raised an eyebrow and the prince couldn’t answer.

"Or better yet, you don’t find it strange that the people assigned to protect you simply vanished overnight?" Logan pressed on putting a psychological pressure on the royal.

"Or rather than keep you under tight security in the safest place in the castle, they shipped you off to the middle of nowhere so that once you get killed it won’t affect their reputation." Logan persisted in driving his point.

"Now before you argue with the lies they fed you for doing what they did, answer this question: if something happens to you, do they have another heir?" He hit the nail on the head with his final question.

Looking in the eyes of the prince, you could see utter devastation at the realization that his own family had sent him to die.

If he couldn’t trust the Kingdom, then who could he trust?

Orion set his sights on the small window in their room and could still see the moon hanging brightly in the night sky.

"Let’s leave the revelations for later in the day." He spoke before lying on the bed to sleep, quickly followed by Logan.

William stayed up for a few minutes longer with a deep, disturbed, contemplative look in his eyes before heading to bed.

**********

In the Aereon continent and the top floor of Emperor Kai’s pagoda, he was having a discussion with two figures.

"What exactly did your move against the academy achieve other than to give them more information about the nature of your power?" Emperor Kai stared down at the figure opposite him.

The figure in question was a mixture of darkness, shadows, and grey energy- the Soul King.

"Well, great Emperor, we decided to have a little fun, that’s all. No harm done." Soul King laughed in its usual discordant voice.

"It’s not surprising that it decided to do something that foolish. It was well within my expectations for such to occur but the magnitude left even my expectations falling short." The third figure spoke.

Emperor Kai and Soul King looked at her. The former with a hint of familiarity and the latter with pure disdain.

"Now, now old hag. You complain about our lack of results when despite being in the kingdom for about a year, you still haven’t brought one yourself." Soul King mocked the woman.

Miss Beth, the third figure, leaned forward.

"I have been busy with something and besides..." She paused.

"I don’t think the kingdom is aware of the... item that we’re looking for." Miss Beth looked at Soul King before choosing to alter her words.

"At least if they are, then they are doing their best to keep their location a secret." Miss Beth completed her statement.

"All we hear is ’I am a weak old hag that has double standards’ and we must say that it’s music to our ears." Soul King remarked with a smug smile.

A pulse of static charge filled the room and electrical arcs started to appear in the air.

The attention of the two went to Emperor Kai.

"Listen. I do not care for our alliance as much as you think. I can afford to get rid of you so don’t push my buttons." Emperor Kai’s voice seethed with suppressed rage as he stared at the Soul King.

"Neither do we. As far as we’re concerned we know where our relationship stands." Soul King retorted.

"But before you find our real body to kill us, we’ll inform the kingdom of the crystal that you’re looking for." Soul King’s voice became serious yet they couldn’t focus on his tone as his words shocked the other two present.

"How?" Miss Beth whispered under her breath.

"Tsk, tsk, tsk. Don’t go losing your hair overthinking that okay." Soul King laughed so hard that his temporary vessel lost cohesion.

Emperor Kai, watching this, merely squinted his eyes.

"Onto important matters then. First order of business? Our joint attack on the kingdom." Emperor Kai silenced the Soul King and started speaking.

"And how are we meant to achieve this exactly? The last time we recall, you had your ass handed to you by the Rune Magus." Soul King’s face twisted into a disturbing grin.

Miss Beth’s finger twitched as her faint smile turned into a frightening scowl.

"Kai, are you sure you don’t want me to rid this world of it?" She asked her best friend, Emperor Kai.

"No Beth, not yet." He smiled at her.

"And as for your question, that was to test something. Now I’m ready to fight or even kill the Rune Magus." Emperor Kai smiled, his eyes glowing an odd mixture of yellow and orange.
