District 42-Chapter 205: The Fourth Lab part 2
Adam had solved some things he needed in another section of the Fourth Lab. It wasn’t an interesting thing either, and he was a bit moody, but work was work and he needed to go through it to be able to continue with his projects.
It was been a little while since he was walking randomly inside there trying to find Casper. He had left the soldier behind on purpose since he seemed to be interested in those Drakkars and a couple of other things in the way.
Adam was sure that, soon or later, the White warrior would stop somewhere to take a better look, and he was not willing to lose time paying attention to that cheap technology, so he let Casper have some fun and just enjoy what he wanted to.
After some stroll, he finally was able to find him.
Casper was talking with some scientists. No, not some, but the whole group of the section destined to the automobile engineering. They were surrounding him, looking very interested in what he was saying, the majority of them taking notes of his explanation.
’Man... You just need to avoid your eyes for a single moment and he is already doing this kind of thing... Now I know how people feel when they are working with me...’
His coworkers always said to him that Adam was just crazy because of his ability to pull ideas from his head out of nowhere and make them came to reality before someone could notice.
In Casper’s case, it was just his way of act. He was unpredictable, and when you thought that he was just naively looking at things, there was a whole scheme happening inside his mind.
Adam approached the group talking in the middle of that section, and once he was in a distance where they could see his face, the scientists gave him a look that was both amazed and unpleased by his presence.
Everyone there hated Adam to a certain degree because of how openly he talked about how boring their researches were. However, they also found him to be an amazing person, because a lot of his inventions helped in the work of other labs, including the Fourth Lab.
The guy was just looking for interesting and amazing things to do, he wasn’t caring for human beings at all, but even so, he could find a way to help everyone with his talent.
Once Casper noticed the stares they were aiming behind him, he turned, and then seemed relieved to be seeing Adam there.
"Oh... Hi, man. I thought I had lost you."
"Actually, you did, but don’t worry about it. I did it on purpose, so you could take a better look at the things you wanted to."
Adam was feeling sleepy again, so he needed to lit up another cigarette. That was why he hated tedious things, they remembered him of how exhausted and sleepy he was.
’Talking about it... I didn’t take a nap this week... Maybe I will beat Astrid’s record, finally.’ He was feeling kind of proud of himself.
That was another thing that sleepiness did with Adam, he lost his focus all the time when he was like that.
"Ah... well, anyway, we need to go see someone, Casper."
The soldier seemed to be ready to continue his lecture to the scientists, but when Adam pointed it out to him, he got curious.
"W-where?" He wasn’t too excited about the idea.
"Early, you were questioning about the Teleporting pads and all... The person who takes care of most operations and updates of the Teleporting pads lives here. He works in a section destined just for this matter. I thought you would find it useful to go there. By the way, you still don’t have too much knowledge about Indigo Energy, and that guy will surely help."
After hearing about that, Casper’s eyes shone. He was willing for a long time until that point to know more about the Teleporting pads, and mainly about Indigo Energy, which was one of the essential supplies of District 42.
He turned to the other scientists, and the first one of them to talk with him gave a step closer and patted him on the shoulder, seeming to be very glad because of Casper’s contribution to the Automobile Section.
"You are welcome to come back here any time you want, ok? I will find a way to borrow an access card for you, so you can come on specific days and tell more for us about what you have in mind for these motorcycles. I am looking forward to working more on it!" His voice of announcer made that compliment two times more good for Casper’s ears, and the soldier got proud of himself.
"Sure. When I get some free time, this place will be the first that I will visit..." He gave his back to the scientists, walking along with Adam to leave that section. "Ah... and don’t forget about our deal!"
The man nodded, giving him a thumbs up.
...
Casper was arriving with Adam at the section they were going to visit. That was the bigger section he had seen in the Fourth Lab until that point, and his jaw nearly dropped because of how amazed he was.
It was just unbelievable that something so big could be constructed inside that laboratory. It was just as amazing as how they could build entire cities and other buildings inside a castle.
The section was split into, at least, five different groups. There was the group taking care of the mechanic and crafting part of the Teleporting pads, some of them were construing the pads from the zero; along with them, several machines, like in a car factory, helped to craft it.
The second group had people working on the system of the Teleporting pads, finding mistakes on its code lines, operation, and possible bugs on the system, and always taking care to update the coordinate and to find some of them that could not be used (After all, they couldn’t let someone teleport to the middle of the street).
There other two distinct groups were taking care of all the science behind teleportation, trying to find a way to improve it and to make it even safer. They were the real scientists there, actually. The others seemed to be more like mechanics, programmers, engineers... The real researchers were participating in the work of those two last groups. 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚
Casper even commented that matter with Adam, because it was a distribution of employees very different from what he saw in the other laboratories he visited.
"Things here work like an old clock, man. Although not all these people are scientists and make some tasks of other fields of knowledge, they need to be here to make all these projects functioning to their max potential. Anyway, the only difference here from the Main Lab, for example, is that they are true employees; different from the Main Lab’s that just outsource these types of workers or then we learn how to do it by ourselves."
They went further inside that section, which seemed to be more a whole laboratory itself. Nearly at the end of that place, there was a little room, which seemed to not belong to there. It was the only strange thing made in the section since all the space used there was well-planned all very well enjoyed.
Adam led the soldier to that room, and once they arrived at the door, which was already opened, they spot someone.
That man was taking care of some papers, writing here and there, typing at the computer, and answering calls.
The genius scientist seemed to be dumbfounded at the sight of that man doing all these tasks there, and Casper got even more than him because his reaction was not what the White warrior was expecting.
’Maybe, that’s not the person we came to see here...?’ He thought, looking back and forth to that man and then to Adam.
That man had gray hair, which showed how older he was. He had a tired and worried look on his face, and his body seemed to be very slim, to the point where he had no muscular mass at all, it was just skin and bones, but it was well covered by the formal suit he was using.
After some while, he finished with his frenzy and was going to rest his back at the chair he was sitting in, and just then he realized his visitors.
"Oh! Adam! It’s good to see you. Please come in! You should have called me, you know? Don’t stay standing at the door like this, you are an honored guest of my son..."
Adam entered there, and Casper tagged along feeling a bit awkward.
"Hmm... Where is Canute? The Princess is being selfish and dragging him along to random places again?"
The old man’s face darkened upon hearing that question. He remained silent for some time.
"Straightforward as always, huh?" He giggled. "Canute... Canute is, now, hospitalized."
His painful and sad voice echoed through the quiet room, and soon the only sound in the background was the phone ringing.
