Dig Up the Sun Emperor's Legacy: I Build an Invincible Undead Legion-Chapter 164: The Heroic Valois Family
Rock Sand City, Gate Guard Unit
Suddenly, a soldier pointed into the distance and shouted:
"Captain, look over there!"
The guard captain looked up:
"What in the world..."
He saw a pack of towering skeleton monsters carrying massive shields and great swords, escorting some kind of weird ’carriage’ as they marched step by step toward the city gate.
Even from way out there, he could feel that thick, bone-chilling aura.
"Now who could this be?"
The guard captain wondered.
Having stood guard at this gate for years, his eyes and instincts were pretty sharp.
This group’s presence could only be matched by a handful of the city’s big shots.
"This is somebody important—everyone look alive!"
He gave his men a stern look, worried his rookie soldiers might tick off whoever this was.
"Yes, sir!"
The soldiers snapped to attention, straightening their backs even more and getting real careful.
...
"Rock Sand City hasn’t changed a lick."
Carlos sat in the bronze palanquin, gazing up at the city.
It was practically identical to what he remembered.
Rough, thick city walls built from yellowish-brown sandy stone kept out the wind and sand.
Set into the walls were huge yellow crystals, like thousands of sleepy sandy eyes catching the sunlight.
...
Stomp! Stomp!
Steady, heavy footsteps gradually got louder, bloody killing intent filling the air.
Black shadows loomed overhead.
The gate guards looked up, many of them gulping hard.
Only now did they realize these skeleton monsters were actually three meters tall, way beyond anything they’d ever seen in skeleton soldiers.
Even scarier, each one carried a great sword taller than a man, naturally giving off a razor-sharp aura that made your hair stand on end.
The thick massive shields were carved with beast heads that looked like lions and tigers, so lifelike you could almost hear their terrible roars!
Suddenly the entire city went dead quiet, an invisible crushing pressure bearing down on them.
The soldier captain’s palms started sweating bullets.
In this mess, all he could do was grit his teeth and step forward.
"Sir, welcome to Rock Sand City.
Please show us your travel papers!"
After speaking, the soldier captain kept smiling, waiting for the big shot’s answer.
After a few tense moments, a voice came from the bronze palanquin:
"Certainly!"
The soldier captain’s heart unclenched.
This important person seemed decent enough.
’Since when did Rock Sand City’s guards get so polite?’
Carlos had heard that Rock Sand City’s garrison wasn’t exactly friendly to outsiders.
He stuck out his right hand, producing a light golden alchemical ring.
Purple Vortex immediately took it carefully and walked over:
"Roar!"
Here you go!
Its black-red body naturally gave off a terrifying aura.
Strange patterns spread everywhere, various sized creepy purple vortexes that looked like they could swallow souls whole!
A naked heart, a grotesquely pieced-together human face—right up close!
What a nightmare sight.
In a heartbeat, all the gate soldiers were on high alert. Some soldiers nervously raised their weapons:
"Monster!!!"
This thing was even more monstrous than dark mist demons!
The soldiers swore they’d never laid eyes on such a freaky creature in their entire lives!
Just then, a calm, commanding voice rang out:
"No need to panic. This is one of my people."
Somehow, the soldiers’ racing hearts settled down.
"Roar?"
Purple Vortex didn’t give a damn about these ants being scared and roared impatiently—why hadn’t they taken it yet?
"Sorry!"
The soldier captain snapped out of it and quickly took the alchemical ring.
One look and his eyes went wide as saucers!
"Light! Light gold!!!"
This was a light golden ring that only the big-time nobles could own!
Engraved on it was a sacred great sword with wings.
’Don’t recognize this noble family crest—not one of the local big shots!’
The soldier captain made a mental note.
"Sir, just give us a moment—we’ll have this sorted right away!"
He slotted the light golden alchemical ring into a nearby device.
After a few seconds, a blue light blinked.
Seeing this, the gate soldiers all stepped aside.
The soldier captain immediately pulled it out and offered it back with both hands:
"Please keep this safe."
Purple Vortex took it and handed it back to master...
Stomp! Stomp!
Heavy footsteps echoed.
The soldier captain watched this mysterious, terrifying group enter the city, thinking:
An outside big-shot noble just rolled into town—I better hustle and report this to my boss!
...
After Entering the City
The towering, intimidating Shield Guards caused quite a ruckus along the way:
"Mon... monsters!!!"
"We’re toast!!! Monsters got into the city!!!"
"You idiot, those are obviously some psychic’s summons!"
"Such intense aura! My gut’s screaming at me to run!"
"Death Herald energy, death vibes—these have got to be skeleton soldiers?!"
"Skeleton soldiers!!!"
"Ten to one these are skeleton soldiers that went through some serious evolution!"
"You’re missing the point here.
From where I’m standing, those two red and purple freaky things are the really scary ones!"
"When did Rock Sand City get such a powerhouse psychic?"
"..."
Inside the Bronze Palanquin
Carlos glanced at the gawking psychics, his brow creasing slightly:
"Weird, why haven’t I spotted a single Golden Sand Society member this whole time?"
This didn’t add up.
As a decent-sized organization in Rock Sand City, with all this commotion, every group in town should’ve sent someone to check things out.
"First stop is Rock Sand City’s garrison. I should give them a heads-up about taking down the Golden Sand Society."
...
At this time, Rock Sand City Security Office
A routine meeting was underway.
Chief Security Officer Freeman lightly drummed the table with his finger, listening to his subordinate’s report.
"Sir, we’ve got the full picture.
It’s the Valois family crest."
The subordinate handed over a file.
"Valois family?
The Valois family that pretty much gave everything in that bloodbath 13 years back?"
On the first page of the file, a sacred great sword with pure white wings stared back at him.
"That’s right, the heroic Valois family.
If it wasn’t for the Valois and other families laying down their lives to hold back those deep dark mist demons, that whole bloody mess might’ve gone very differently."
District One Security Officer Todd’s voice was thick with respect.
Suddenly, District Three Security Officer Sia let out a heavy sigh:
"Man, I heard the Valois family’s down to just two young heirs now."
All the security officers went quiet—this was hitting too close to home.
Chief Security Officer Freeman flipped through the file and slowly asked:
"So which Valois family member stirred up all this fuss coming into the city today?"
District One Security Officer Todd looked torn and hesitated:
"...That’s where it gets tricky.
The current Valois family head, the noble Duke Iris, follows the Guardian path, which doesn’t match up with what that person was showing off at all.
And the only male heir, Master Carlos Valois, is just 15 years old. He awakened 11 months ago to the Death Herald path.
No matter how fast he’s growing, there’s no way he could have such powerful evolved skeleton warriors in less than a year."
The moment he finished talking, District Two Security Officer Willie suddenly slammed his hand on the table. He said irritably:
"Look, why don’t we just go pay them a visit!
We’re not hunting down traitors here—why all the sneaking around?"
Everyone heard this and figured it made perfect sense.
Chief Security Officer Freeman asked:
"Where did that skeleton crew end up going?"
"From the looks of it, they headed toward the garrison camp."
