Descending Into A Novel-Chapter 121:Naming RD
"What about Amelia?"
"Don’t like it."
"Selene?"
She shook her head again, "Don’t like it."
Raymond sighed, leaning back onto his chair. The vibration from the train giving him a massage as he thought of new names.
He tried again," Eleanor?"
This time, Ellen was the one who expressed her dissatisfaction with the name.
"Definitely not that."
"Why not?"
"Don’t you remember Eleanor? The one who was obviously flirting with you?"
Searching through his memory, it indeed seemed as if there was an individual like that. During the entrance exam, right before entering the battle royale.
"Why can’t you just keep the name Colleen?"
"That’s stealing, and stealing is bad!"
...dragons often loved to steal though?
Their mountain of riches didn’t come from working an honest job that was for sure, even though most dragons actually disliked having a mountain of riches. Not to mention, dragons frequently stole cattle from other races for food!
He suggested,"Sharing is caring isn’t it? You and Colleen can just share the name."
"Hmph. That’s what a thief would say."
...little brat.
Raymond had assumed this would be easy, he had experience raising Anna after all. Except he overlooked two crucial factors.
One:Anna was already very mature for her age due to what she went through.
Two:The current child in front of him is a red dragon.
Dragons were notoriously troublesome as children, red dragons were notoriously troublesome among dragons!
As for how Raymond knew this much about dragons.
Well, that was because he was close friends with a dragon. Someone he had met during his travels between dimensions.
Ignacio Sonder, or as Raymond and others more often called him—Flare. Was a true one hundred percent red dragon just like little Colleen. Except he was from a higher dimension so he was much stronger and larger then she could ever be.
He was also a system user, one of only five that he was aware of (including himself). Which made him extra special. His system was unfortunately, like Raymond’s. Just a basic one that mainly showed off what he already had rather then something like Zachary’s or Valerie’s.
"What about Aria?"
"Don’t like it."
He could understand her being picky over her name, but wasn’t this too picky? Raymond had suggested several hundred names at this point already to the point he was starting to run out.
He threw out a few more names that he could think of for good measure.
"Audrey?"
"Tessia?"
"Cassie?"
She shook her head at each offer. Before going back to playing with the model stands that Ellen had bought.
Speaking of model stands, his eyes locked onto the other two that Ellen had bought. A simple figure of a white wolf and a orange cat, he couldn’t help but feel like they were supposed to be him and Ellen. But when confronted, she had merely brushed it off.
"I’m hungry, should we get cabin service?"
Several minutes later, the three of them were sitting around a table in their cabin. Enjoying their food, although Ellen seemed a tad bit concerned for what Raymond ordered for Colleen.
"Are you sure she can eat this?"
"Drago- kids eat this in the wild all the time. It’s fine."
They also didn’t use the term ’dragon’ for fear that she might undo her human transformation and wreck the train.
It was actually quite impressive, dragons found it hard to use magic naturally due to their high mana quantity. It was like being able to lift hundreds of pounds, but being unable to bend your fingers.
Compared to other races, who were born with lacking mana and lacking mana skills. Dragons were born with too much mana and lacking mana skills.
The fact that she was able to maintain her human morph without any struggle whatsoever showed she had incredible talent for magic. Second to Flare, who was even better at magic then Raymond.
"Watch."
Dragons ate raw animals after all, Flare was able to swallow up to a dozen in one gulp. So a cooked steak like this was nothing for her.
Cutting the meat off of the bone, Raymond held the bone to her mouth. Letting her sharp teeth bite down on it with a crunch.
"Tasty?"
"It tastes good!"
Despite the bones being hard enough that most humans couldn’t eat them, Colleen casually crunched through the entire thing.
"...you are sure it’s fine right?"
"It helps them to develop their scales. Plus, it’s a good source of nutrition."
Raymond helped to wipe her mouth, holding her chin as she squirmed around. Before letting her go back to playing with the models.
Opening up the coffee club group chat, he fully expected it to be filled with more pointless banter. Only to be pleasantly surprised that a few people had actually tried to help and suggested some decent names.
Vicky:What about something like Sophia? I think it has a nice soft feeling.
Unfortunately a pass.
Clara:Sophia is nice but what about something like Rose or Daisy?
Lily:My sisters names are Rose and Daisy already. Can we not suggest a name like that?
Rose and Daisy were nice as well, but he didn’t think a name like that fitted her. Plus Lily already had two siblings with those names.
...Lily, Rose, Daisy and Willow. Her parents were really unimaginative.
Clara:Then why don’t you give some suggestions then?
Lily:What about something like Eve? Or Erin?
Eve was a pass unfortunately, Raymond’s exe was named Eve so that was a hard no.
But the other name...
"What about Erin?"
She blinked, "Erin?"
So far so good. She hadn’t immediately rejected it.
"Erin Grace. It’s similar to mom’s name isn’t it?"
Ellen blushed slightly, being called mom was a new thing even for her. But that wasn’t important right now.
"Erin," she repeated. Testing out the name.
"You don’t have to be Erin if you don’t like it."
She said it again, a little louder and clearer this time.
"Erin..."
"I like it!"
He let out a breath of relief, making a mental note to thank Lily for the idea.
"Then your name will be Erin from now on."
"Erin...thanks dad!"
"...no problem."
Dad.
That word hit harder then anything else Raymond could have thought of.
His chest tightened, as if someone had reached in and squeezed his heart. For a second, Raymond could see an image of Anna standing in her place. Her feline ears twitching nervously as she called out to him.
"Dad..?"
Erin and Anna had barely any resemblance at all. But the image still shook him deeply, his vision got blurry. Gripping the edge of the table as he tried to stabilize himself.
She reached up to him, pulling on his sleeve as she looked at him hyperventilating.
"It’s nothing...just go back to playing."
"Okay..."
But what he didn’t expect was Ellen. Seeing him almost enter a panic attack, she immediately reached out and put her hand on him. A faint glow emanating from her fingers as she activated some sort of Art.
He could feel his turbulent emotions quiet down, letting his breathing calm down.
"Thanks..."
"It’s fine. Was it what she said?"
He nodded, shakily answering her without another word.
"Do you want me to tell her? I’ll tell her to not call you dad anymore."
"No it’s fine. I was just a bit shaken is all."
Raymond closed his eyes, infuriated at himself.
Despite what many said, time only ever lessened something. It couldn’t ever take it away fully, even now years and years later. Raymond was still suffering from his own past. Something he tried so desperately to just forget.
Ellen’s Art abruptly cut off when she let go of him, but his emotions had calmed down enough.
"Haah. I haven’t been called that in a long, long time."
"Do you want ice cream?"
"Sure."
It always made him feel better. Although Erin tilted her head slightly when she overheard their conversation.
"What is ice cream?"
"Ice cream is...how do I explain this?"
From what Raymond knew, dragons could typically handle most foods. But he wasn’t so sure about red dragons and ice cream.
Red dragons were infamous for their fire after all, he was unsure whether cold foods would be good for their bodies.
’It’s probably fine right?’
They were tough creatures after all, a dragon wouldn’t die from something like a stomachache from ice cream.
Taking a small spoonful of ice cream. He carefully held it out for her, letting her take a small amount to get used to the taste and temperature.
"Like it?"
Her eyes lit up, tail shaking in excitement as she tasted it.
"Like!"
He took another spoonful and fed it to her. Watching as she happily devoured it each time.
Hieek—!
She groaned, clutching her head.
Raymond recognized the symptoms immediately.
A brain freeze, although. Wasn’t she a dragon? How could a dragon possibly be weak enough to get a brain freeze from just a little ice cream?
Casting a spell to relieve it, he put his spoon away. Only now did he realize that all of his ice cream was gone, he hadn’t even gotten a chance to try any.
That was probably why she had gotten a brain free actually...
