Chapter 41: Ghost Town (1)

In one carriage, Moira and Rosie were seated together, the latter being there much to Lareina’s displeasure. While in another carriage...

’’Are you awake?" Azrael glanced at the woman who had her eyes closed for some hours by now. Her brows furrowed at his question but she did not move as much.

Even when the roads get bumpy, she would clutch something tightly as if she was holding onto her dear life but her eyes would never open.

Like right now, the woman’s closed eyes seemed slightly strained at this point in time.

In the end, Azrael pinched the spot between his brows and coldly declared, ’’I would not talk to you, if that is what you want.’’

A pair of beautiful hazel eyes opened immediately, taking in the sight of the places outside.

When the carriages stopped, Lareina was surprised because the sight of the place was familiar.

It was the ghost market they had visited a few days ago.

And before she could think of it any further, two familiar figures appeared in front of their carriage.

’’Your Highness, My Lady,’’ the man and woman bowed a little.

Lareina was momentarily dazed. It was perhaps the first time someone addressed her in the same breath as Azrael without sounding sarcastic about it.

She recognized both the people. One was the seamstress and former soldier who had taken her measurements that day and protected her during the abrupt invasion of the demonic beasts and the other was the man who had led her to the carriage that waited outside, fighting off all the beasts on their way.

’’Rune, Astra, why are you here too?" A head peeked out from the other carriage as Moira addressed the two people with extreme familiarity.

"Lady Moira,’’ The man acknowledged while the woman remained silent.

’’Ah, My Lady, you don’t know them, do you?" Moira gasped a little and pointed at the man, ’’He is Rune and she goes by the name Astra. They fought in the war and they are some of the great fighters under His Highness.’’

Moira’s tone was almost kind as if she was merely introducing these people to her. She always was kind and innocent when Azrael was around but the subtle implication of ’I know him, his people and his circumstances’ did not go unnoticed by Lareina. Rather, it was a resounding reminder of when the woman had mocked her asking whether she felt Moira’s presence when Azrael kissed her or touched her.

If it hit a nerve or two, Lareina did not show it on her face.

’’The Lady has met us before so I can ascertain that she is not clueless about our existence at all,’’ Astra stepped forward, face impassive as she declared.

’’Your Highness...’’ Moira looked at Azrael with a gaze that screamed ’I am being bullied again’.

"Lady Moira, don’t just bother His Highness...’’

’’That’s enough,’’ Azrael calmly interrupted Astra who had spoken up again.

Lareina sighed and leaned back into her seat, looking at Astra with a hint of felt sisterhood between them. As expected, he could not accept to hear a word against Moira.

It made her feel a little stuffy so she moved in her place, refusing to acknowledge the feelings she was determined to discard.

By this time, Rosie had also walked out the carriage. She nagged Lareina a few times about food and water, this and that, momentarily distracting her from the heart touching affection between her husband and the woman who seemed more of his wife than her.

"Get to work,’’ At Azrael’s command, Rune and Astra immediately bowed their heads, ready to work on the orders.

While the rest of them were clueless, those two people seemed to already be aware of what they were required to do.

"We will make the preparations right away,’’ The two subordinates walked away in the direction of the ghost market.

’’I fail to understand why His Highness must let that vixen tag along everywhere with him. Why did you greet her so respectfully?" Astra was a demoness with short height and standing next to Rune, she did not even reach his chest but her undisguised disdain towards Moira shone through her short height, reflecting her bad temper.

’’She is with His Highness,’’ Standing next to Astra, Rune however seemed more poised and quiet, a man of few words.

’’His Highness even brought Lady Lareina with him this time and that vixen has tagged along. What do you think is he even planning in his mind?’’ Astra grumbled some more, ’’Isn’t it the precursor to chaos? How can the wife and the other woman stay peaceful in one place.’’

’’It’s not our place.’’

What he meant was it was not their place to meddle in the prince’s business. They should follow the orders and mind their own tasks instead of talking about this.

"I have prepared the packages,’’ Astra said in a resigned manner, albeit she still looked like she wanted to say that she had a bad feeling about it, ’’Just get that with us and we will be able to take care of things on our way.’’

...

Near a vast span of barren land, two intricately designed carriages stopped. At first glance those carriages looked like they belonged to someone who was rich, albeit not wealthy and immensely prestigious. People who ventured through carriages in the realm were rare and not many of them owned those hence despite it not being frighteningly lavish, it still caught the gazes of the passerby.

From the two carriages alighted a family of six, excluding the two coachmen who tied the horses to the nearby trees and left the family.

The family consisted of a married couple, the husband’s father and mother, the husband’s younger sister and the wife’s younger sister.

But no matter how one looked at it from afar, the family was a little bizarre. Every member other than the wife seemed to be dead afraid of the husband. The husband maintained a stone cold face and even though his features were not that remarkable, his tall and wide build made him seem more intimidating.

What else? The husband’s father and mother talked to him with their backs slightly hunched while the younger sister never took her gaze off him.

As for the wife, she seemed rather disgusted with everything. One hand supporting the side of her head, she had extended her other hand towards her little sister who wiped her hand constantly with a silken handkerchief.
