Chapter 40: A Mission (5)

Three days later.

It was their day of departure to the said ghost town where the ghosts had been wreaking havoc.

The usually bustling demon palace was awfully quiet. The demon lord had last been shown in face in the court on the night he made this decision to send Azrael on the mission.

Lareina did not know the inner workings of the court but Rosie had ears everywhere. She was young and did not serve a powerful master or mistress, the demons usually did not hold their guards against her so she was usually able to gather some information.

Such as the demon lord had retreated for a closed door cultivation. The young fourth prince had been a little quiet since the chaos on his birthday banquet. He chased hounds and teased maids but his actions were a little less loud than before. The third prince, sickly by body, was once again plagued by weakness and mostly rested in his bedchamber. The crown prince had gone back to his manor to recuperate from his ’ailments’.

Lareina was escorted by Rosie far out where the carriage waited but on the way, she did not see a single official that had been there in the court that night. Nobody came to see Azrael off.

"You are here.’’

Lareina snapped out of her thoughts and turned around, only to discover that Azrael had come to stand behind her at some point.

After their interaction that night, they had not seen each other again. Maybe it was the morning light, but his features, despite being sharp and striking, seemed slightly gentle. His face was paler than usual and his brows were slightly tugged together as he looked at her, seemingly contemplating over something.

"That night...’’ Azrael opened his mouth after a long while. Seeing that she looked at him without a hint of impatience, he found it a little easier to speak, ’’Actually, I am not aware of..." 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮

"Your Highness... Your Highness...’’ A disgustingly sweet voice pierced through the calm in the air.

Lareina’s face, which had been calm since the beginning, wavered a little when she saw Moira, lifting the hem of her intricate gown as she ran to Azrael like a broken kite, ’’Are we setting out now?"

Azrael turned to Lareina, ’’We...’’

’’Your Highness, where is the second carriage?" Lareina cut the man off, her voice cold.

’’My Lady, we are going out on a mission. Countless demons have been suffering in that town for who knows how long. It is not an outing, how can you make such demands?" Moira lowered her head, her eyes sad like that of a matriarch who could not see her people suffering, ’’You are a princess and it must be difficult for you to go through this together with us but his Highness has his troubles. We should share his burdens instead of adding more to it.’’

Lareina looked at the woman who seemed on the verge of crying and felt like it was rather laughable. She felt like her own position was already laughable and this woman’s antics were just as laughable as her position.

’’You can share His Highness’s troubles. I would not want to put up a fight with you over that.’’

Lareina smiled softly, ’’I am merely asking for another carriage."

’’My Lady, must you be so stubborn? His Highness has already made arrangements. We all can easily fit in this royal carriage...’’

"I have a genuine condition which makes me intolerant of filth, Lady Moira. I do not seek a lavish one, a wooden one with little space will do."

Rosie’s lips pressed so tightly together as the girl tried to stifle her laughter that her entire face turned red.

Moira’s face altered colours, somewhere between green and blue, blue and black. The pallor of demons seemed to contribute in highlighting the colours.

Azrael’s lips twitched slightly as he looked at Lareina who was standing there like a well-behaved and solemn princess.

Moira’s eyes teared up as she turned to Azrael, ’’I am merely concerned that His Highness will be troubled and...’’

"That’s enough,’’ Azrael raised his hand.

Much to Moira’s disbelief, a new carriage came to stand beside the one that was already there. The new carriage was way more lavish.

’’Your Highness, this is your private carriage...’’ Moira muttered under her breath.

Azrael wordlessly turned to Lareina who nodded in visible gratitude, ’’I would take the other carriage...’’

’’We are taking my carriage,’’ Azrael cut her off, his gaze then trailed to Moira and Rosie, quietly stating the obvious.

Moira bit her bottom lips, looking up at Azrael with grievous eyes but the man led his wife to his carriage without expressing much.

When they reached the carriage, he offered Lareina his hand but grabbed her dress and lifted it, before pushing herself up with a few struggles.

Azrael’s eyelids twitched. He had a feeling that this mission was not going to be as smooth sailing.

The two carriages left the palace quietly and a few shadows moved near the gates, disappearing into the palace. In a grand bath, the demon lord was settled in deep waters, two maids rested in his arms while another three served him by scrubbing his body. All the five maids who surrounded him were stark naked.

The guards who entered did not dare to lift their heads up, ’’My Lord, they have left.’’

’’Mm...’’ The demon lord pinched the nipples of one woman in his arms who moaned and curled in his arms.

"Lady Moira has accompanied the second prince too.’’

The demon lord clutched the woman who was curled up in his arms and shoved her face between his thighs under the water. As he tilted his head back, the other maid performed ministrations on his upper body, ’’It is good. The more the trouble, the easier it would be for me to see how capable that son of mine is.’’

Two carriages left the premises of the capital smoothly, attracting everyone’s attention on the way to being recognized as the royal carriages.
