Chapter 198: The Identity Of Her Attacker

After a harsh dismissal from the director, Brooke took out her phone and placed a call to Thane, at first he didn’t pick up. Hence she called a taxi, directed him on where to go and tried to catch some sleep in the backseat.

However, barely some minutes after, Thane called back, and the moment Brooke heard his voice over the phone her eyes watered.

"Brooke I’m sorry for missing your call, I was in a meeting..."

In a sudden rush tears came gushing out of her eyes, she covered her mouth so he wouldn’t hear her cry.

Concerned he called out to her, "Brooke, can you hear me?"

She hugged the phone to her chest, imagining he was there with her. The taxi driver stared at her through the rear view mirror, wondering if he should say something.

For the next minute, no one said a word, the only thing she could hear over the phone was the sound of brisk walking and the sound of his rushed breathing. fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com

"Brooke, stay where you are, I’ll come get you." Thane said over the sound of his car engine starting.

She sniffled, "Alright."

To the driver she had him stop the car, after paying him she stepped down and found a bench to sit. She opened her purse, pulled out a face mask and a hat and slipped them on.

Just as Thane had promised, he arrived at the location she was at, his phone held to his face, brandishing the location sharing feature.

People turned their heads when a handsome young man marched out of a luxurious car towards a plain woman sitting on a bench.

Brooke lifted her head at the center of everyone’s attention, and it was her husband, standing possessively in front of her, with his coat in his hands.

"Sorry for being late." He said slipping his jacket on her shoulders.

Inhaling his cologne, she tugged tightly onto it’s sides, enveloping herself in his scent.

He stretched his hand out to her and led her towards the awaiting car. But Brooke hesitated, she turned to Thane and said, "I feel like taking a stroll, if that’s fine with you."

Thane looked over his shoulder at the people staring at them, some even tried to discreetly record him.

"Are you okay?" he lowered his tone to ask.

She nodded, "I just don’t want to feel boxed up right now."

After a few seconds he suggested, "Alright, but not here, let’s go somewhere where it’s just the two of us." Gently he led her to the car, and gave the driver the instruction to take them somewhere private, suitable for an evening stroll.

While the driver drove to the location, his hand found Brooke’s trembling fingers and entwined them in a strong hold. He placed a kiss on her forehead and whispered softly to her hearing alone, "I’m here now."

When Sarah arrived at the hospital, Serena had just received consciousness as well, and demanded to see her daughter. However, because of the nature of her condition, Cassie had to speak with the police to make a statement on what happened.

Outside her private room, Sarah watched her sister pace about the hallway, completely frightened.

"Why are you so pale? Cassie is already out of danger, once she gives the statement, the culprit will be caught and dealt with." Sarah said breaking the ice.

Serena clicked her tongue and continued pacing, unable to vent out her true frustrations. To herself she worried, ’If Cassie ends up blurting out that Ethan did this, we’ll lose our chance to trap him once and for all.’

When Serena heard her pregnant daughter had been assaulted, the first thing she thought of was the night of the attack. She recalled Cassie leaving the house to see someone but refusing to tell her who it was.

The only people she would see so late at night, and at such a tensed period had to be either Luther and Ethan.

And between those two it was clear who would lay hands on her.

’Cassie think! Please, don’t ruin our chance. We can blackmail Ethan into marrying you and claiming the kid. Don’t tell the police the truth-’ Her thoughts were interrupted when two police officers stepped out of her hospital ward, finished with the report.

Serena dashed inside the hospital room and closed the door behind her, leaving Sarah with the police officers.

Confused, Sarah approached the police men to ask about Cassie’s report.

Meanwhile, inside the room Serena was panicked, she grabbed Cassie by the shoulders and immediately demanded of her, "Tell me what you just told them! Who attacked you?!"

Cassie winced in pain, "Mom stop, you’re hurting my-"

"Answer me!" She yelled. Realizing she was loud she lowered her voice and leaned in closer, "Did you tell them Ethan was behind this?"

Staring into her mother’s rabid gaze Cassie couldn’t help but shake her head. Her mother was never this hostile and especially not when she had gotten hurt.

Serena sighed in relief, "Thank heavens! You really are my daughter, now we have the upper hand against that bastard." She retracted her grip and flashed her a smile. "We can have him come out and take responsibility for the child, your name would be cleared and we would be richer."

Inside Serena was bursting with Joy, she hadn’t even began to discuss Julian coming back into her life, richer than ever. Stacking up these opportunities, Serena truly felt she was being rewarded for all her good deeds.

But Cassie contorted her features into a frown. "Ethan? What does he have to do with this?"

In a loud whisper Serena replied, "Well, you met up with him that night and he did this to you." She said, staring at the bandage wrapped around Cassie’s head.

But Cassie’s confusion only deepened. "But mother, I didn’t meet up Ethan that night. He wasn’t the person I went out to see."

"W-What? What do you mean?" She chuckled nervously, the realization of Cassie’s words hadn’t fully settled in Serena’s mind.

Clarifying, Cassie said, "Ethan wasn’t the one who did this to me."
