Chapter 158: Ganging Up On A Helpless Woman

The old man helped Brooke into the front seat, he carefully placed her wheelchair and things in the back, then got behind the wheel of his vintage model car.

Brooke could tell just from sitting that his car was expensive, it looked simple but had a classy feel to it.

He noticed her staring at the stereo and cocked a wide grin. "This car is one of only seven existing models. It took me half a year of searching to find and acquire it." He went into further details, giving her a rundown of the car’s specifications and features.

Brooke raised her brows, "You must have an interest in cars."

He started the car with a nice hum, "I do. But my sister doesn’t think much of it, and frankly neither did my parents."

"I think it’s a great hobby, I mean look at how happy you sound just talking about it." She defended. "If it’s what you like to do, you should go for it."

"Wise words from a wise woman." He teased, earning a light chuckle from Brooke.

He made a turn then adjusted his mirrors. "You know, I always wanted to share my love of vintage cars to my children. I have two cars back home, one for my son Kayden, and the other I planned to gift to my daughter."

"Your kids are lucky, that they have such a kind dad." Her countenance fell when she recalled her reason for going to the Grayson house.

She looked at Julian and sighed inwardly, ’Why couldn’t I have a father this compassionate?’ she held that thought up until they arrived at the Grayson estate.

At the gate, the security demanded an identity check. Before Julian could introduce himself, they recognized Brooke and gave the signal to have the gates opened.

"She truly is a Grayson." He thought out loud. However, he wondered which of the Grayson boys she had gotten married to.

Inside, Brooke noticed there were more cars parked than when she left and suspected the entire family was around. More of them for her to deal with.

Julian narrowed his eyes at the way Brooke quaked as she wheeled towards the main house. He called out to her a couple of times, but she didn’t answer, or rather it seemed that she didn’t even hear him call out.

Just as he was about to call out again her phone rang, jolting her out of her thoughts. She stopped herself and checked to see who was calling. She typed in a quick response then placed her phone on vibration.

"Are you okay? If there’s something wrong I can take you to the hospital-" Julian cut himself off when he heard a familiar voice from inside.

Brooke blinked twice, "Is everything alright?" she traced his gaze to the main entrance, wondering what was wrong.

"You-"

"Dowry?! Don’t make me laugh! I should be the one demanding a dowry from you people!" Scott yelled from inside.

Brooke frowned and balled her fists, bracing herself for what would happen. Julian marched forward furiously, and Brooke wheeled after him, wondering why he seemed so triggered.

"My daughter is married to the heir to your empire, a dowry of twenty million isn’t such a hefty sum." Scott haggled, making Brooke sick to her stomach.

The maids stationed by the entry looked at her with disdain as she wheeled herself into the scene unfolding.

His back turned to her Scott went on, "She’s very fertile that one, and she’s crippled too, so she’ll have nothing else to do but birth babies-"

"Scott." Julian’s voice called out, shutting Scott up completely. His shoulders tensed and his voice cracked.

Slowly, he turned around, only to see the two people he never expected to be next to each other right behind him.

"Mr Reginald-"

Before he could say a word, Zachiel narrowed his eyes at Thane’s wife, "Brooke, come here."

But she remained where she sat. "Scott, what the hell do you think you’re doing here?" she snapped at him.

Scott furrowed his brows. ’She isn’t calling me dad, could it mean that she’s already discovered the truth?’ he felt sick at the thought.

He shifted his gaze to Julian, who looked pissed off immensely.

"I don’t think you heard what father said, he just called for you." Edward pointed out, his tone hardened, and his eyes narrowed into a glare.

Brooke inhaled sharply before answering, "I didn’t come here to meet with any of you. I came here for him."

Sophia hissed, "You grow more audacious by the day! First, you disobey my orders and now you send your shameless father here to steal from us. Like father like daughter I must say."

Brooke swallowed Sophia’s words, and turned to Scott, "Leave now, or else I’ll say something I shouldn’t." She threatened, referring to how he wasn’t her real father.

However, Scott had come to a whole different conclusion on his own. He turned to leave, but was stopped by William, Edward’s son, whom she had never once spoken to before.

"Brooke, don’t you think it’s too crass to not even give us a proper introduction? We’re your in-laws, at least give us the basic respect." He said, making her out to be the bad person in the scenario.

Desmond seconded, "Why does everyone from the illegitimate side of the family have no manners whatsoever? Or were you only taught how to trap a man?"

Sophia laughed, "What more would you expect from her? Her father can’t even afford a decent pair of shoes but he has the audacity to come here and make such brazen demands. I wonder when we let our family fall from grace-"

"If you were to ask me, you people sound like the ones bringing down your family name." Julian inserted, drawing everyone’s attention towards him.

Edward frowned, "Who the hell are you?"

Julian dry coughed, "Pardon my intrusion, but I don’t think any sane person could stand to watch your family gang up on a helpless woman."

"You-" before Sophia could get a word in he cut her off.

"You lot ought to be ashamed of yourselves." he remarked, earning harsh glares from every corner of the room.
