Contract Marriage: Let's Make It Real, Mrs. Sterling!-Chapter 127: Brother-in-Love vs Real Brother
The sound of water was incessantly echoing in Jensen Sterling’s ears, unsettling him for some unknown reason. He got up and walked to the balcony, pinching a cigarette between his fingers.
He cracked the window open slightly, using his cold, pale fingers to twirl the lighter at his fingertips before leaning down slightly to light the cigarette.
The balcony light was off, casting a bit of darkness. A faint glow flickered intermittently in the space, and the man’s silhouette was hidden in the dimness, his gaze deep.
In that moment, the smell of cigarette smoke that had just surrounded him seemed to vanish. He stood there enveloped in silence, gazing at the distant city lights, his eyes as quiet and still as dead water, unruffled by any waves.
Countless nights before, he had stood like this, watching the bright lights below and feeling the silence around him.
The cigarette was nearly finished, about to burn his fingers, when a voice sounded in the room: "Teacher Sterling... Teacher Sterling?" The voice carried a hint of probing.
Jensen Sterling snapped back to reality abruptly, turning around. Behind him was the lit room, his Adam’s apple bobbing slightly. Having just smoked, his voice was a bit hoarse, yet it carried an unusual charm.
Jensen tossed the cigarette butt into a nearby trash can, opened the window a bit wider, and then walked in.
"I’m here, what’s up?"
A small crack was left open in the bathroom door, and an annoyed voice came through: "... I forgot to bring... clothes."
Mia Sutton was truly about to die of frustration. During the days she stayed here, Jensen Sterling wasn’t around, leaving her alone. Sometimes she would just go get things herself when she forgot something.
But now: "..."
It was the epitome of awkwardness; only she knew the internal struggle she went through before finally speaking up.
Jensen Sterling hadn’t expected such a situation, but he calmly asked, "Where?"
"The bottom shelf of the wardrobe in my room."
"Hold on." Jensen said and then turned to walk to Mia’s room.
Not long after, he knocked on the bathroom door. A small gap opened from inside, and a fair hand reached out, with tiny water droplets from the steam.
Jensen handed her the clothes, and Mia quickly said a thank you before the bathroom door shut with a swish.
Jensen stood there: "..."
After a moment, he walked back to the living room and naturally sat on the sofa. If it weren’t for his slightly pursed lips, he would appear quite composed.
While waiting for Mia to come out, a ringtone suddenly sounded from nearby.
Jensen looked down in the direction of the sound. It was where Mia had been sitting, her phone tossed there with the back facing up, and the case featuring a cute cartoon character.
After hesitating for a few seconds, Jensen picked up the phone and glanced at the screen. The contact name read ’Promo Call’.
He hesitated a bit and didn’t answer, letting it continue to ring.
It rang for a while before the caller hung up, but just two seconds later, it started again, as if it wouldn’t stop until answered.
Jensen: "..."
Then he turned towards the bathroom and said, "Mia, your phone is ringing."
And a crisp female voice responded loudly: "Mr. Sterling, could you pick it up for me and just say you’re my brother?"
Jensen paused for a moment at her words and then pressed the answer button: "Hello?"
There was a significant pause on the other end, followed by a somewhat aggressive tone: "Who are you?"
Jensen replied as Mia instructed: "I’m her brother. She’s busy at the moment. Do you need to leave a message for her?"
There was another pause, and then a cold chuckle before the caller slowly said, "I didn’t hear my mom gave me a brother!"
