Consequences of Dumping the Obsessive Boss: Stuck with Him Forever-Chapter 273: The Meaning of the Other Half
After watching his figure disappear into the distance, Tina Huxley unwillingly asked Mrs. Huxley, "With things like this, why are you still so polite to him?"
"What else should I do, tear into him and make a big scene?" Mrs. Huxley stared numbly at the still-illuminated operating room, unable to muster any energy. "Especially at times like these, you need to stay composed and not let him easily provoke your emotions."
"I can’t stay composed. I suspect today’s incident is related to him; he rushed over just to watch the drama unfold." Tina’s hands trembled with anger.
Mrs. Huxley sighed, sent the assistant who had come to help with matters to the side, then took Tina’s hand and gently patted it. "That’s why you need to stay composed. Don’t be fooled by how well he’s doing now. The old man hasn’t given up the chairman’s position for years. Justin Huxley’s past performance was mediocre; the old man won’t easily hand over the position to him."
"That’s exactly why I suspect that today’s events are related to Justin Huxley." Tina looked ahead with tears in her eyes, gritting her teeth in hatred. "With this happening, Justin can take the chairman’s position without obstacles."
"Who said without obstacles?" Mrs. Huxley disapprovingly shook her head, squeezing Tina’s hand. "Isn’t there still you? Compared to other members of the Huxley Family, we know Justin better. And there’s Maxim Sinclair..."
Speaking of Maxim Sinclair, it slowly dawned on Tina why Justin used to be so invested in her affairs with Maxim.
Claiming he was helping his sister all along.
In reality, it was all about snatching the inheritance.
Seeing Tina not grasping her point, Mrs. Huxley sighed in concern.
The children in the family aren’t reliable, and Justin’s scheming and depth are so profound; this battle will be tough.
"What I mean is, Justin is now focused on suppressing Maxim Sinclair and taking things from his hands," Mrs. Huxley paused, meeting Tina’s puzzled gaze, and continued, "The enemy of my enemy is my friend. You should try to approach Maxim and see if you can ally with him."
"How is that possible? The Huxley Family and Sinclair Family have practically torn each other apart," Tina’s face was filled with resistance. "Maxim Sinclair is far scarier than Justin. If I go to him and he uses me to swallow up the Huxley Family, how will I explain myself?"
Tina’s concerns weren’t unfounded. Mrs. Huxley thought for a moment and agreed, feeling Tina didn’t have old ties with Maxim and lacked leverage to make him willing to cooperate.
Better not use this strategy; it’s too dangerous.
"If it doesn’t work, then let it go. I was just merely suggesting." Mrs. Huxley shook her head, continuing to watch the still-lit operating room. "Let’s not dwell on it anymore for now."
...
Summer Lowell was drowsily awakened by the commotion beside her. Upon opening her eyes, she found it was Maxim Sinclair, who carried the chill of the night.
"Did I wake you?" said Maxim as he reached out to turn on his side of the bedside lamp.
Covering her eyes, Summer adjusted for a moment, before realizing she was thirsty. She got up, poured herself a cup of warm water, and, while drinking, watched Maxim. "Why are you staring at me?"
"I just got back from outside."
"I know. I can feel it; autumn nights are cold, and you bring a chill with you." Summer casually poured him a cup too. "This water’s warm. Drink it to ward off the chill."
"You’re concerned about me?"
Maxim laughed and took the cup. "That’s the point of having a partner, isn’t it? Coming back late at night and having someone hand you warm water and to chat with. Look how well-suited we are!"
"Sorry, I’m just worried you’ll bring the chill into the bed and freeze me. Don’t imagine scenes that don’t exist."
Summer drank almost half in one go, walked to the window, pulled back the curtains, and glanced at the pale sky afar. "Were you busy all night?"
"No, I was woken up two hours ago. The Huxley Family ran into some trouble. The people I arranged to keep an eye on them called to report the latest. I stepped onto the balcony to take the call, so as not to disturb you."
Maxim loosely held the cup, looking at Summer with a knowing smile. "Do you know what’s happened with the Huxley Family?"
Summer wasn’t particularly interested in the affairs of the Huxley Family, but given the atmosphere and Maxim’s intriguing expression, she couldn’t help being curious.
Since she was unlikely to fall asleep soon anyway, she might as well indulge in some gossip.
"What happened?" Summer questioned, then skeptically added, "Will you really tell me?"
"Why wouldn’t I? Of course, I’ll tell you," Maxim beckoned Summer closer with a finger. "Tina Huxley’s father was set up by Justin. He overturned his car on the way back from meeting clients and is now being rescued in the hospital."
After saying this, Maxim swirled his cup, adding, "I think it’s a bit touch-and-go. Justin is not one to be trifled with; he must have gone all out. I fear Tina’s family’s prospects are grim."
This gossip didn’t amuse Summer, even though Tina had previously tripped her up numerous times. 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂
"When you lost your job and your support, and found yourself stuck with me, Tina played quite the role," Maxim commented, watching Summer closely. "Doesn’t this sound like a small victory for you?"
"Tina may have wronged me in the past, but ultimately, you’re the root of the problem," Summer seated herself at the bed’s edge, her back to Maxim. "People’s lives are at stake. If I were to jest like you, I’d be heartless."
Maxim, having been chastised, chuckled lightly, set down the cup, and leaned over to hug Summer from behind. "I forget that while you seem bristly on the outside, inside you’re quite soft."
"Don’t define me or stick labels on me," Summer elbowed Maxim away, pretending to smile. "And don’t forget, I’ve backstabbed you more than once."
"Oh, I won’t forget. It’s etched deeply," Maxim rubbed his abdomen, where Summer had nudged him forcefully. "As I was saying, your senior, after plotting and enduring for so many years, is finally seeing his dream come true. Shouldn’t you call to congratulate him? After all, without you, he wouldn’t have succeeded so soon. Or rather, without your help, his takeover of the Huxley Family would’ve remained merely a dream."
"I won’t call, and keep me out of your grudges," Summer kicked off her shoes, lifted the covers, and lay back down. "I haven’t slept enough; don’t say anything more. I want to go back to sleep."
"Go back to sleep," Maxim lay down next to her. "Let’s treat what we just said as a bedtime story, maybe it’ll help you sleep."
