Clinging to Devoted Fiancé, Heiress Slays the World!-Chapter 675: Perhaps It Will Be Years Before I Return
Ji Wei staggered out of the bedroom. The bright, glaring lights outside made her squint as she looked at the empty, carpeted hallway. She suddenly didn’t know where to go.
After standing still for a long while, she slowly lifted her gaze to the door of the children’s room next door.
The thought of An An’s rosy, chubby little face made her nose tingle. Ji Wei bit down on her lower lip until it turned pale, desperately holding back her tears. Then, taking a deep breath, she walked over and pushed the door open.
The children’s room was quiet, illuminated only by a small moon-shaped wall lamp. In the warm light, An An lay peacefully asleep in his tiny wooden crib.
A thin little blanket covered him, his chubby hands and legs stretched out as he slept soundly in a prone position.
The little baby breathed softly, his serene sleeping face a picture of tranquility and beauty.
Ji Wei quietly leaned against the door frame after walking in. Gazing at her son’s calm sleeping expression, her emotions suddenly broke down. She clasped a hand over her mouth, crying silently as her shoulders shook violently.
"I’m sorry... I’m sorry, my baby..."
"Mommy still couldn’t keep this family together for you..."
Tears fell like beads from a broken string. Ji Wei didn’t dare weep out loud; she kept her hand firmly over her mouth and leaned her back against the solid, unyielding door frame, barely able to remain standing.
She couldn’t collapse. From now on, she had to be strong and live well every single day, for An An.
Gu Moqian was close behind, exiting the bedroom. He saw Ji Wei enter the children’s room with his own eyes.
Muffled sobs seeped through the door, suppressed but unmistakable. Gu Moqian’s dark, somber eyes were fixed on the door, his gaze unfocused as he stood there in a daze.
He stayed motionless for a long time, his tall, upright figure radiating an overwhelming sense of desolation.
It wasn’t until a sudden, unpredicted spasm hit him that he jolted back to reality. His sharp-featured face instantly turned pale, and he clenched his fists tightly, enduring the excruciating pain like ants gnawing at his flesh. With quick strides, he turned and walked away.
Inside the car, Gu Moqian gasped heavily, beads of cold sweat covering his forehead.
The unbearable itch and pain surged stronger. He yanked at his shirt collar in agony, his body losing its balance as he collapsed onto the car seat.
His body yearned desperately for something, a craving so intense it felt like it was tearing him apart.
He gritted his teeth and endured, endured...
Even if he had to die, he wouldn’t touch that thing.
Because once tainted, there’d be no way back.
Outside the car window, the night stretched endlessly dark, the occasional vehicle passing along the road. The shadows of the streetlights elongated and solitary.
Inside the car, time seemed to crawl. The man slumped in the seat only gradually ceased his spasms after what felt like an eternity. He struggled to prop himself up bit by bit, the sweat soaking the strands of his hair against his forehead and the broad patches of his white shirt clinging to his back.
Gu Moqian’s pale, handsome face exuded exhaustion. He slowly exhaled, and after regaining some strength, he placed both hands on the steering wheel and drove the car away from the villa entrance.
On the way, Zhao Wanqing called him.
"Mr. Gu, there’s way too much company material to sort. A week simply isn’t enough," the woman complained over the phone.
"Do your best for now. Anything unfinished, I’ll have Chen Ke take over. Once I’m back in Britain, he can send the materials directly to me," Gu Moqian said flatly.
"You should’ve said so earlier. I’ve been pulling overtime the past two days because of this. Ugh, fine, I’m going to take my beauty sleep now. Goodnight, Mr. Gu."
Zhao Wanqing hung up.
Gu Moqian stared at the darkened phone screen, his lips pressed into a tight line.
The plan for his trip back this time was to stay for a week, wrap up the handover of the Gu Family’s affairs, and leave everything to be handled by the upper management. He himself intended to live long-term in Britain, considering both of his parents were there.
Perhaps, once he left this time, it might be years before he returned again.
