Chapter 264: Chapter 264: Better Off Without

Owen Fulton came out of the kitchen holding a dish, just about to call "Dinner’s ready," when he saw the owners of the house cuddling on the sofa at the other end of the room. He quickly turned around and went back to the kitchen. Both he and Mama Bennett had been hoping Ethan Sterling and Ruby Sullivan would remarry, so of course, he didn’t want to barge out at this moment and ruin the mood.

But Owen’s hastily departing figure was spotted by Ruby Sullivan.

She hurriedly pushed Ethan away, blushing as she exclaimed, "Are we eating or not?" Then she dashed to the bathroom, needing to wash her face and calm down.

Since Honey really likes Gwen Yates, they didn’t plan on changing her teacher for now. After a discussion, they decided to observe Honey for a while before deciding whether she should see a psychologist. Taking such a young child to see a psychologist can be somewhat risky in a certain sense.

In the evening, Ethan Sterling extended another work invitation to Ruby Sullivan, "If you want to learn management, you could try being my assistant."

"No way," Ruby Sullivan replied decisively, thinking that office romances felt really inappropriate.

If she was going to step out and work, she needed to make something of herself.

Ethan gently rubbed her head, continuing to persuade, "I just think you’re wasting resources staying at home, not to mention you might start to mold."

Ruby turned sideways and instinctively swung her leg over him, "Let me think about it." Having stayed at home for so long, she couldn’t help but feel the outside world was too dangerous; her turtle-like nature really popped up when she wasn’t careful.

As she nestled in Ethan’s arms, finding a comfortable position to lie down, she suddenly realized the hand on her head had stopped moving.

She raised her head to look, noticing Ethan’s expression was rather strange, "What’s wrong with you?"

Ruby’s face stiffened, and she quickly withdrew her koala-like pose, lying flat calmly.

Ethan sighed, and flicked off the light, "Let’s sleep."

"Okay," Ruby replied very quietly, turning away from him.

In the adult world, is enjoyment really the right answer? Moreover, she had had two kids with Ethan, so if the first time was clueless, what about all the many times afterward? Even with a strong sense of purpose, she was immersed in it, but now why did just thinking about it make her heart race?

"Well..." she began reluctantly, "Is it really uncomfortable for you to hold back every day?"

"Yes," Ethan felt there was no need for vanity in such matters. Many times, after she fell asleep, he would quietly go wash his face before coming back to bed. 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺

"Maybe we should..." Ruby bit her tongue, unable to continue her sentence.

"No!" Ethan hurriedly interrupted her, fearing she’d say something that would snap the thread balancing in his mind, "I can wait."

Ruby let out a long breath, "Thank you."

Ethan turned to hold her from behind, "You’re welcome."

He understood what she was hesitating about. None of their previous encounters had been because of love, so he was willing to wait, wanting to wait until she figured things out, until she was willing to give herself to him. Of course, he also didn’t intend to wait forever; Ms. Sullivan’s turtle-like nature was something he was gradually understanding lately. If he didn’t give her a push, she wouldn’t come out of her safety shell to face life.

The next day, after Gwen Yates arrived, Ruby Sullivan comfortably left Honey in her care, dolled herself up, and headed out the door.

During her days at home, she’d always gone entirely bare-faced, not even a base layer. After finishing up in front of the mirror, she hesitated for a while, feeling somewhat unfamiliar.

It seemed that putting on makeup was like donning armor, turning her into the unstoppable Wenny.

Today, she had arranged to meet Sasha Shaw for a meal. It had been a long time since they’d met, and she wanted to hear her friend’s advice.

They planned to meet at a Japanese restaurant and didn’t book a private room. Ruby Sullivan chose a table by the window, Sasha was still on her way, so she ordered some of their favorite dishes, planning to order more once Sasha arrived.

Just as she was tilting her head to look at the road outside while waiting for the meal, she suddenly felt a chill all over, as if drenched from head to toe, and turned around to find Rhonda Sullivan standing behind her, holding an empty glass. Clearly, the cold water from it had been dumped on her.

Rhonda Sullivan sneered as she put down the glass, "Long time no see, sister." Her aftereffects hadn’t completely disappeared; although her speech was much clearer now, one side of her mouth still twitched unnaturally when she spoke.

Ruby Sullivan asked the waiter for a dry towel, and while wiping off the water, she chuckled, "Do you still think you haven’t suffered enough?"

"You will die a horrible death!" Rhonda Sullivan cursed viciously.

Just then, Brandon Sullivan rushed out of the bathroom, "Rhonda, what are you doing?" Then he saw his younger daughter, Ruby, in a mess and instinctively pulled Rhonda behind him, looking somewhat anxiously at her, "Ruby."

Ruby Sullivan looked at his protective stance, and her heart hurt fiercely for a moment, "Get this lunatic out of here, or else don’t blame me for being rude."

Brandon Sullivan frowned, unused to his soft daughter speaking such harsh words, even though they had fallen out before, "Ruby, you haven’t been home for so long. I know you have many misgivings with your sister. Why don’t you come home with me, and we can sit down, talk things over slowly; after all, we’re all family, there’s no hatred that carries over to the next day."

The father who once treated her as his prized jewel was now not only a nagging old man but no longer her true father either. Enough, such a father was no longer impressive, better not to have him.

"Take her away quickly!" Ruby Sullivan turned her head coldly, unwilling to see them anymore.

"Ruby..."

"Let’s go!" Rhonda Sullivan interrupted, dragging him away by the arm, deliberately shouting, "Your daughter doesn’t recognize you anymore; why are you shamelessly begging her?"

People hearing these remarks immediately cast strange glances, as if Ruby Sullivan were an unfilial child; otherwise, her sister wouldn’t have doused her with cold water in public.

Ruby Sullivan listened to the whispers entering her ears, and only cold smiles remained on her face.

Go ahead, say it louder; it’ll remind her of the embarrassment and anger now, allowing her to not hold back the next time they face off!

About ten minutes later, Sasha Shaw finally appeared. Seeing Ruby in such a drenched state, she was stunned, "Honey, it hasn’t even been raining, right?"

"Ran into Rhonda Sullivan," Ruby mumbled.

Sasha Shaw frowned slightly and then quickly pulled her from her seat, "Come on, let’s go buy clothes first."

"Hey, hey, I’ve been waiting and haven’t eaten a thing yet."

"What if you get sick?"

"Eating first won’t make a difference," Ruby replied indifferently.

"No, you’re my dear Sasha’s treasure, I can’t let you fall ill!" With that, she dragged her to the counter to swipe her card and pay, then dashed off to the mall.
