Chapter 249: Chapter 249: Speculation

Ruby Sullivan wiped the tears from her face with the back of her hand, cleared her throat, and said, "I saw the DNA test report of you and Seth. I already know, so... you don’t need to hide it from me anymore."

Ethan Sterling’s expression turned even more perplexed, as if he had no idea what she was talking about.

Back then, when Cindy Sterling handed Ruby Sullivan the test report, she suggested it might have been done secretly by the elder Mrs. Sterling, because she trusted Ethan wouldn’t lie to the family.

But no matter how Ruby thought about it, she couldn’t believe that Ethan would be unaware of this, and he had too many reasons to lie.

At that time, he always wanted Rhonda Sullivan to take care of Seth. If Seth was just a foundling with no blood relation to him, then the damage from the stepmother would be minimized, and it would clear up many issues, like any unknown woman showing up one day, for example.

As for why he kept it from her, the reason was even more obvious—he didn’t want Seth to get hurt because of Honey.

While Ruby Sullivan calmed down in the hospital, she had plenty of time to think about this matter. Although calculating Seth’s birth time showed that Ethan must have cheated during their marriage, for her now, these were trivial matters, and she could overlook everything, as long as he would let their son undergo a bone marrow test. Even if it still didn’t match, she would accept it.

Overwhelmed by sadness, Ruby Sullivan couldn’t observe Ethan Sterling’s expression rationally and just followed her preconceived notion that even if exposed, this man would choose to act before her.

Seeing his reluctance to relent, she suddenly stood up, knelt before him, grabbed his hand, and begged, "Ethan Sterling, I’m really begging you, if it doesn’t match, I’ll accept it, but I really can’t watch Honey just die like this, I... only have this one daughter..."

The more she spoke, the more upset she became, crying until her face was flushed, her voice hoarse.

Ethan Sterling was completely stunned, but seeing her react so intensely, he quickly helped her up, worried about her injuries.

"Ruby, calm down first." He spoke while sorting through the information she had just revealed, then raised three fingers, his face full of determination, and said, "I swear to God, I know nothing about what you said. If there really is another son of mine in this world, then... you are the only mother to this child."

He thought of that investigative report. Back then, Ruby Sullivan clearly gave birth to a boy and a girl. If Seth really was his son...

Ruby Sullivan was also stupefied, "What you said... is true?"

They couldn’t wait for Seth to finish school, so after informing Mama Bennett and Honey, they left to immediately bring their son for a DNA test to set their minds at ease. If Seth was indeed the son Ruby lost, then he could surely save Honey, filling the gap in her heart!

Seeing both parents show up together at school, and his mother looking like she had been crying, Seth’s heart sank, "Did something happen to Honey?"

Ruby Sullivan shook her head, "No, you don’t have to worry." Squatting down to look at Seth’s little face, the more she looked, the more she felt he somewhat resembled herself in features.

After Ethan Sterling explained to the teacher, he picked up Seth with one arm and held Ruby Sullivan’s hand with the other, walking out. His mood was just as unsettled as Ruby’s.

Back then, he had let Howard adopt a child, how could it be such a coincidence to have adopted his own son?

After the family of three arrived at the hospital, as a precaution, they all had their blood drawn for the sample.

Seth was always reserved, even though he didn’t understand why, seeing his parents’ strange expressions, he remained silent and compliant all the way, not asking any unnecessary questions.

Ethan Sterling had no patience now to wait until tomorrow to know the result. Zane Lawson promised it would take at least three hours at the soonest, telling them to wait for the news at home and he’d inform them immediately once the result was in.

After checking the time, he decided to wait at the hospital. If confirmed that Seth was indeed the son he and Ruby lost, he would immediately arrange a bone marrow match for him and Honey.

While waiting for the result, Ethan Sterling called Howard, asking him to explain in detail the circumstances of adopting Seth back then.

Howard, sensing something was off from the tone over the phone, initially thought something had happened, "Have Seth’s biological parents come looking for him?"

"Answer my question," Ethan cut him off, having no time to explain.

"When I arrived at the orphanage, a policeman just happened to be bringing Seth over. I thought that child was particularly adorable at the time, and since he was just born not long ago, he certainly had no memory of his past. We’ve always supported that orphanage, so they didn’t keep any records and directly handed the child to me. It was partly to hope the child could henceforth have a good start and leave fewer traces behind."

Ethan Sterling tightly gripped his phone, his knuckles turning white, "Why was Seth sent to the orphanage?"

"The policeman said he was an abandoned baby, found refusing to eat or drink, and running a high fever, so back then, the police had not enforced registration, thinking the biological parents wouldn’t come looking."

After hearing him out, Ethan hung up the phone. If Seth was truly his son, then perhaps some mistake occurred when traffickers tried to sell the child to Ariston City.

Next to him on the bench, Ruby Sullivan held her son, her gaze somewhat vacant.

If the final result proved Seth wasn’t her son, it would mean opening the wound she least wanted to face, pouring salt into it.

Seth looked at his father on his left and mother on his right, unable to hold back, he finally decided to ask his father after seeing his mother’s state, "Dad, can you tell me what’s happening?"

Ethan Sterling looked up at him, deciding to tell him the truth.

Previously, he hadn’t planned on revealing Seth’s true identity, at least not before he reached adulthood.

"Seth, you are actually a child we adopted, which is why you’ve never met your mom. But now... you might be the child your mom and I lost."

Seth’s eyes widened in shock, "I... am your child?"

"It’s just a possibility," Ethan Sterling held his hand, "But regardless of the test result, we will still love you as we always have. Nothing will change. If you are our son, then you are Honey’s biological brother."

Seth immediately understood his father’s meaning, "Then I can save Honey, right?" His eyes lit up; he had been the most distressed these days!

All this time, he believed Honey was Ruby Sullivan’s daughter with no blood relation to Ethan Sterling. After learning Ruby and Ethan had been married, he always regretted not being Honey’s real brother.

Unexpectedly, now all regrets were gone. He joined the anticipation for the result, unable to resist praying to God that he was the lost child of his parents.

Ruby Sullivan was somewhat surprised. Although Seth had expressed a willingness for a bone marrow test before, children’s thoughts change any time, but seeing his excitement, she couldn’t help but tear up, hugging him, kissing the top of his head, feeling even more tender towards this child.
