Chubby Mommy: Scheming Daddy, Surrender Now!-Chapter 232: A Father Both Strange and Familiar
Ruby Sullivan didn’t want to argue with him about this matter, so she turned away and pulled up the covers, mumbling "sleep, sleep," trying to hide her current fluster.
Ethan Sterling quite liked how she was behaving now, watching the back of her head with a smile as he lay down. "Lights out."
"Okay." Ruby answered sullenly.
Ethan turned to her and whispered in her ear, "Your dad seems normal now, but his way of thinking is quite different from before. You shouldn’t doubt his love for you in the past based on his reactions now."
Ruby was taken aback, not expecting him to be so attentive and wanting to comfort her.
Seeing her unresponsive, he playfully scratched the back of her head, then changed positions to lie flat. "I envy you for having a father who loves you so much."
Ruby bit her lower lip, thinking about Ethan’s family, knowing that his yearning for familial love was genuine.
The next day, Brandon Sullivan got up early, had breakfast, and went back to his room, perfectly avoiding a meeting with Ruby and Ethan.
It was Ruby’s first time dealing with an elderly child, genuinely feeling he was more difficult than a true child. After thinking it over, she decided that only during midday, when Ethan was not home, she would cook something delicious to lure him out of his room for a good chat.
Even though he’s an elderly child, he can’t be completely unreasonable. Brandon’s dislike for Ethan always bothered Ruby a little.
At the kindergarten, when parting with Honey, her little sweetheart hugged her and worriedly said, "Mommy, don’t get mad at Daddy today. That way, everyone will be happy."
Ruby found Honey’s understanding of family relationships somewhat amusing, ruffled her hair, and promised, "Mommy knows."
Seth Sterling’s school was near the kindergarten, part of the same institution’s elementary school, just across the street.
He had a math quiz today, his first test since enrolling in this school, and during the ride, he kept reading, seemingly a bit nervous.
Ruby noticed that Seth, who was usually calm and composed, became anxious at exam times, which was not a good sign.
So after getting in the car, she closed his book on purpose, "Math is about carefully reading questions, checking your work, and performing on the spot. Reading more won’t help." Getting this nervous for an elementary school test, what about when it’s time for the college entrance exam?
Seth mumbled a response, but still looked worried. As they approached the school entrance, he couldn’t help but say, "I’m afraid I’ll mess up and disappoint you. My classmates seem to fear disappointing their fathers, but you and Dad have never pressured me about this, so I..."
So he didn’t know how his parents felt, only comparing them to others’ parents, which made him more nervous.
Ruby hugged his shoulder and laughed, "Seth, your dad and I always want you to be happy, whether it’s in studies or anything else, as long as you do your best."
Seth looked into her smiling eyes, and a small smile gradually appeared on his face. "Got it." Since returning, he had some difficulty adjusting, but he knew his parents were busy, and his sister’s health wasn’t good, so naturally, they had to care more for her, which was why he hadn’t mentioned these feelings.
Although he attended an international primary school, it was very different from schools in Meridia. His classmates were friendly, but the excessive friendliness and closeness were a bit overwhelming. But his mother’s words gave him confidence—to do what he loved and just do his best.
After dropping off both kids, Ruby met up with Mama Bennett at the supermarket. After choosing vegetables, she picked up two fish and a bit of pork ribs.
Looking at the variety of foods in the supermarket, Ruby suddenly felt a pang of guilt.
She knew her father liked her cooking but didn’t know what he liked most, not even his preferred tastes, which Mama Bennett understood better. After graduating, she married Ethan Sterling, focusing all her thoughts on the person she loved and unknowingly neglected the father who cherished her.
On the way back, she couldn’t help but ask Mama Bennett, "What was my dad like back then?"
"Sir..." Mama Bennett thought for a moment, "He had a good temper and treated his wife well. In all these years working for your family, I’ve only seen them have a serious argument once. But... this time they seemed to have a misunderstanding, and Sir stood his ground. Even after your mother’s passing, it seemed unresolved, which saddened him deeply for quite a while."
She sighed, recalling the man’s dejected state back then, and couldn’t help but lament, "We all saw how upset Sir was at that time. Encountering such a man in life is a blessing for Madam, but... her luck was too thin."
After saying this, she sighed again, noticing Ruby’s face, smiled sheepishly, "You got to smack my lips. Why am I saying all this? Anyway, Sir is a good-tempered man, just coax him a little, and it’ll be fine."
"Okay." Ruby nodded with a smile.
She was a bit surprised by Mama Bennett’s words. In her memories, her parents had a good relationship. It was impossible that a small misunderstanding would cause a rift. Her father’s decision not to remarry after her mother’s passing was proof of their strong love. With these thoughts, she became even more curious about what happened back then.
Maybe she could talk to her dad about her mom; isn’t it said that old people like to reminisce? Ruby already knew a lot about her mother, and if she could use this to cheer her father up, it would be perfect.
Thinking about how to coax her father, after putting away the groceries at home, she went to knock on his door because the servants said they hadn’t seen him out all morning.
Ruby thought, even if he’s upset, he’d still need to drink water and use the bathroom, surely he won’t refuse food, water, and even the bathroom out of stubbornness?
But after knocking several times, there was no response.
She became worried, "Dad, I’m coming in." Pushing the door open, she found the room empty; not a trace of the old man.
Ruby’s brow furrowed, and she quickly scanned the room. Remembering his current childishness, she even checked the wardrobe, which of course, was empty.
She went out, promptly called the servants to help search, and it was the first time she felt their home was a bit too big with too many rooms.
Two hours later, after even checking the small warehouse in the garden, there was still no sign of him.
Ruby was worried sick, calling Ethan while heading to the property management, hoping to find some clue in the surveillance footage.
Finally, they saw footage of the old man leaving on the screen. Judging by the time, it was shortly after they left that morning, sneaking out when the servants weren’t paying attention.
At this moment, Ethan, who rushed back from the office, picked Ruby up at the neighborhood’s entrance, "Calm down and think, where could he have gone?"
"Could he have gone to your house to look for something?" Ruby’s mind was blank, realizing she knew nothing about her father.
