Chubby Mommy: Scheming Daddy, Surrender Now!-Chapter 155: Don’t Wait for Me to Act
Ruby Sullivan felt the warmth in her palm, slightly moved her fingers, and then was overwhelmed by an all-consuming fatigue, as if all energy had been drained from her. She didn’t even have the strength to lift her eyelids. It took her a long while before she barely managed to open her eyes, and Rachel Lawson’s anxious face appeared before her.
"Awake?" Rachel asked cautiously, even though it was obvious.
From the moment Ruby’s fingers moved, Rachel had been tensely watching her face, finally seeing her open her eyes.
Leon Sterling quickly leaned in, "Ruby, how are you feeling? Is there anywhere that feels uncomfortable?"
"Water." Ruby moved her lips, managing to say two words with great difficulty.
She exhaled a long breath, her eyelids fluttering slowly, just wanting to sleep, but the pain in her abdomen kept her mind exceptionally clear.
She was pregnant, but the baby was gone.
Thinking of this, tears began to silently flow from the corners of her eyes.
Rachel hurriedly took a tissue to wipe them, "Child, you’ve been wronged." As she spoke, she also started to cry.
Leon brought over a glass of water, his eyes filled with heartache, "Do you want to sit up?"
"Mm." Ruby nodded, but when she tried to move her arms, she found she had no strength.
He put down the glass and sat on the hospital bed, lifting her up and adjusting the pillow for her. "The doctor said it’s normal to feel weak when you first wake up. Your body is very weak, and the anesthesia might not have worn off yet."
At this moment, Ethan Sterling walked in slowly, not daring to get too close. He stopped at a distance and looked at her.
Seeing his face, Ruby’s tears gushed out instantly, "Get out." Her lips moved dryly, barely making a sound.
Leon frowned, turned to Ethan, "She doesn’t want to see you right now."
Vivian also didn’t want to see Ethan and just focused on wiping her daughter-in-law’s tears, "You shouldn’t cry. Your body is too weak; the doctor said you mustn’t be too sad."
Ethan couldn’t bear to see Ruby like this, so he turned and left.
Not long after, Mama Bennett came in with porridge and well-stewed soup. Seeing Ethan standing outside the room, she just softly called, "Sir," without saying much else, then entered the room.
The soup had been simmering since they came to the hospital, knowing that Ruby would need it. The porridge was made after Rachel called her when she arrived at the hospital.
"How is she?"
"No major issues." Rachel gave a brief response.
Mama Bennett, worried about Honey and Seth at home, said, "I’ll go back first. Take good care of yourself, Second Miss; I’ll comfort Honey and Seth."
Ruby nodded, still too weak to speak.
Seeing Mama Bennett come out, Ethan quickly stopped her, "How is Ruby?"
Mama Bennett wiped her tears and said, "She looks as though half her life is gone. Sir, you really wronged our Second Miss." Thinking of past events, she felt even more sorry for Ruby, not wanting to lose control in front of him, so she quickly left.
Ethan glanced into the room, then quickly drew back, afraid of being seen by her and causing her more grief.
Ruby had no appetite, managing only a few bites of porridge and two or three sips of soup before she couldn’t eat anymore. She just felt exhausted, wanting to sleep again.
Leon was concerned about her condition being abnormal, so he called a doctor for a simple examination. Once assured everything was normal, he felt at ease.
It was well past dinner time. Rachel ate some porridge and told Leon to go eat as well, "I’ll watch over her; you go back."
"I’ll stay; I can’t leave you alone here." Leon said unceremoniously.
Rachel glanced at him, knowing that Leon was in no mood to listen to reason at the moment, so she had to compromise, "Suit yourself, but I’m staying tonight. If she needs to go to the bathroom or something, it’s inconvenient if you’re the only man here."
"Do you want some porridge?" Rachel asked, seeing there was some left in the food container.
Leon shook his head, "I’m not hungry."
She sighed, packed up the things, and handed them to Ethan who stood at the door, "Go back; Leon and I can take care of this."
Ethan took the container, asking softly, "How is she?"
"Just the same." Rachel sighed. "Let’s go out; I don’t want to disturb her sleep."
The mother and son stepped outside, and Rachel asked, "What are you planning to do about Rhonda Sullivan?" To her, this woman was not a person anymore, but a problem that needed to be solved.
"I asked the doctor; they can test the cord blood when the fetus is four months old. If it can save Honey, then we’ll keep it." He didn’t say the rest of his thought.
Rachel nodded, "Don’t wait for me to act."
"Understood."
"Ruby’s body can’t handle another pregnancy anytime soon. Even if you have your reasons, think about how to comfort her." Rachel frowned, doubting whether her son could hold onto his wife.
Ethan nodded, "I understand."
"Go back now, drive carefully." Rachel sighed, looking at her son, who appeared lost, feeling both pity and a sense of ’you had it coming.’
That evening, after putting the two children to bed, Ethan found a message from Rhonda on his phone, inquiring about Ruby’s condition. He rubbed the screen with his fingers, eventually unlocking the phone and calling her, "At two, don’t show up at The Sterling Family again. Don’t let anything happen to your child." Then he hung up.
Rhonda stared at the blackened phone screen, angrily throwing the phone, "She fell on her own; why take it out on me?"
Iris heard the commotion, quickly running out to pick up the phone and place it on the coffee table. She hesitantly asked, "Is Mrs. Sterling alright?" She was just a low-level worker, fearful of getting into trouble over this.
"What Mrs. Sterling?" Rhonda glared at her, "I’m Mrs. Sterling." She touched her belly, speaking fiercely.
Iris sighed and wisely said nothing more, choosing to leave.
Earlier that afternoon, after they returned, Rhonda had sent her to the hospital to gather information, but hospital staff became nervous upon hearing her inquiries about Mrs. Sterling, immediately notifying Mr. Sterling. Ethan had frightened her away from the hospital.
In truth, Rhonda wasn’t overly concerned about Ruby’s situation; seeing the blood on the ground, she had more or less guessed the outcome. She merely wanted to confirm whether Ruby was still alive.
In her mind, if Ruby was so unlucky as to have died in the fall, then it would have been worth the trouble she had faced.
*
Ruby felt she was continuously dreaming, with Honey repeatedly crying out for "Mom." She searched desperately but couldn’t find her. After what seemed like an eternity, she finally saw Honey crying loudly, saying, "Mom, it hurts." She tried to reach out and hold her, and then Honey suddenly turned into a baby, its features so blurred you couldn’t even tell if it was a boy or a girl. Just when she was puzzled, the baby suddenly turned into a pool of bloody water.
She woke from the dream, her face wet with tears.
Leon Sterling awoke with a start, and in the moonlight, seeing her fearful look, he quickly grasped her hand, "Don’t be afraid, I’m here."
