Chubby Mommy: Scheming Daddy, Surrender Now!-Chapter 154: Afraid of Being Abandoned
Two hours later, the doctor came out of the operating room, apologetically looking at Ethan Sterling, "The adult is fine now, but unfortunately, the child couldn’t be saved. A two-month pregnancy is still unstable, and the woman’s body was too fragile. She needs to recuperate for a few days, and in half a month, a D&C procedure will be necessary."
The doctor sighed after speaking, "It’s a miracle she was able to conceive, considering how fragile her body is. You were too careless."
Ethan Sterling was completely stunned. Seeing that the doctor was about to leave, he frantically grabbed her arm, "Are you saying that my wife was pregnant?"
"Yes."
His Adam’s apple moved, lips trembling for a long while before he said, "But we previously had her checked, and the doctor said the likelihood of her getting pregnant was almost zero."
"That’s why I said earlier that it’s a miracle she conceived with her body condition." The doctor gently pulled her hand free from his grip, "I know this is a heavy blow for you, but you must calm down immediately, because at times like this, a woman needs even more comfort."
Not long after, the nurse wheeled Ruby Sullivan back to the hospital room.
Her body was very weak, and upon learning the truth she became emotional, so the doctor had to administer some sedatives during the treatment to prevent excessive bleeding caused by emotional distress.
The nurse mentioned that she would probably wake up in about an hour, and before leaving, also said that the miscarriage had hit Ruby Sullivan hard, urging family members to ensure they comfort her once she wakes up.
Ethan Sterling nodded numbly, his mind blank.
It was he who pushed her away, he who killed their child, and he who extinguished Honey’s biggest hope.
Ethan Sterling sat by the bedside, his hands tangled in his hair in frustration, his heart wrenching in pain.
All of this was his fault. If he had told her the truth from the beginning, perhaps today Ruby Sullivan wouldn’t have come back in anger to argue with Rhonda Sullivan, and maybe Rhonda wouldn’t have caused such a scene at home.
He thought he could handle all of it behind her back to ease her mind, hoping only to tell her once Honey was saved, fearing she’d be disappointed time and time again.
He remembered the desolation in her eyes when she heard the test results from Don; that ashen gaze stabbed painfully at his heart. He secretly vowed to protect her from then on because he didn’t want to see that expression on her face ever again.
But now, he had messed everything up.
At that moment, Leon Sterling stormed in angrily, pulling him up from the stool and landing a hard punch, "Bastard!"
Ethan Sterling only felt the punch causing stars to dance before his eyes, unable to feel the pain, only a sense of satisfaction. If he could, he’d want to punch himself hard like that a few more times. Before he could steady himself, another punch landed on his face, causing him to stagger and fall to the ground.
Leon Sterling still felt unsatisfied, grabbing his collar and raising his fist again.
Rachel Lawson rushed over to stop them. She glared and scolded in a low voice, "If you want to fight, take it outside!"
Leon Sterling frowned but released his grip.
Ethan Sterling slumped dejectedly on the ground, tears streaming down not knowing if it was his eyes stinging from the blows or because his heart hurt too much.
Rachel Lawson sat by the hospital bed, looking at Ruby Sullivan’s paper-white face, feeling her nose sting with pain. She sighed, pulled out a tissue to wipe away her tears, and gently held her hand.
The uncle who had been standing stiffly at the doorway slowly stepped inside, patting Ethan Sterling on the shoulder, then glanced at Leon Sterling, "Let’s go, Vivian can handle things here."
Leon Sterling took one last look at Ruby Sullivan before walking out of the hospital room first.
Ethan Sterling hesitated for a moment, then followed suit.
Outside, the uncle went to a convenience store and bought an ice lolly, handing it to Ethan Sterling, "Put this on your face to reduce the swelling. Otherwise, it’ll be even more swollen tomorrow." From his younger days, he had quite a bit of experience with such injuries.
Ethan Sterling accepted it, still too dejected to lift his head, "Thank you."
Leon Sterling stood to the side with his hands in his pockets, questioning, "Are you happy now?"
"I don’t want to argue with you." Ethan Sterling mumbled with his head down.
The uncle sighed, gesturing to Leon Sterling to calm down, "In the end, this is between the couple, let them handle it themselves."
Of course, no one had told him about both brothers liking Ruby Sullivan, but he had some insight into such matters. From Leon Sterling’s actions and words, it was clear that he had once had some flirtations with this sister-in-law.
Leon Sterling cast him a glance, unwilling to air family secrets, and retorted with a frown, "You don’t understand."
"I may not understand what’s between you, but your brother is really hurting right now. Questioning him won’t solve anything, and when your sister-in-law wakes up, the first person she’ll want to see is still him. Beating him up like this, she might even be worried." The uncle smiled, hoping to ease the tension between the brothers.
Annoyed by the old man’s goodwill, Leon Sterling turned and walked towards the medical building to see Ruby Sullivan. He had to admit, especially after seeing how Rachel Lawson cared for the child, he was a bit uneasy leaving her in charge.
"Hey?" The uncle waved his hand at Leon’s retreating figure, reluctantly lowering it, "Young people these days..."
"Uncle, it’s getting late, you should head back." Leon Sterling said politely, not having much heart to sit and chat, heading back to the hospital room.
The uncle suddenly felt a bit awkward, realizing his attempt to gain some favor with Rachel Lawson might not have succeeded.
*
It was Mama Bennett who called Rachel Lawson, out of fear that Rhonda Sullivan might come to the hospital and cause trouble, fearing Ruby Sullivan would be taken advantage of, and knowing that Ethan Sterling couldn’t handle it all alone.
So, everything Mama Bennett knew about the goings-on was passed on to Rachel Lawson as well. Just over the phone, Rachel Lawson was already fuming, and now seeing Ruby Sullivan, she had only one thought: to tear that bitch Rhonda Sullivan apart.
Leon Sterling inquired with the doctor about all the details before standing by the bedside muttering, "When she wakes up, I want to take her away." This was spoken to Vivian, but it wasn’t a proposal, merely an announcement.
He knew that by doing this, The Sterling Family might become a laughingstock, but he had to do it. He couldn’t bear to have her suffer by his side any longer.
Rachel Lawson sighed, "As long as she agrees." Ruby Sullivan was so stubborn; once she set her mind on something, she’d persist in doing it, much like her mother.
She knew Ruby Sullivan married Ethan Sterling probably mostly for the child, so even knowing about him and Rhonda Sullivan, she chose to remain silent, hoping everything would eventually pass...
She sighed again, "Blame me..." If she had been more assertive in intervening, not thinking the children would solve it on their own, maybe taking the responsibility of a mother and mother-in-law more seriously, perhaps this tragedy wouldn’t have happened.
Afraid of clashing with Leon Sterling, Ethan Sterling stood leaning against the wall outside.
Truthfully, he didn’t dare see Ruby Sullivan, feeling ashamed to face her. It was the first time he couldn’t bring himself to face someone.
He didn’t know what to do next and was terrified she would leave him once she woke...
Ethan Sterling, of all people, was afraid of being left behind.
