Chubby Mommy: Scheming Daddy, Surrender Now!-Chapter 139: The Patient Next Door
Ruby Sullivan thought that if there was ever an employee appreciation award, she should definitely have her name on it. Could there possibly be a more accommodating boss than her?
Lending her car to Howard wasn’t a big deal, but getting a cab at this time was indeed a bit difficult. Seeing Howard’s pitiful face, she had to soften and agree.
He was always on call 24/7 with Ethan Sterling, which wasn’t easy.
The elevator stopped on the first floor, and Ruby Sullivan walked out helplessly, pondering that she might need to call Honey later, as she had promised to visit her at the hospital for a meal.
Before she could walk out of the lobby, she saw through the glass door that someone parked a car at The Sterling Group’s entrance, and the car looked a bit familiar.
Then, Ethan Sterling got out of the car, wearing jeans and a white shirt with the top two buttons undone, revealing a glimpse of a white tight vest inside. He might have felt youthful, but since it didn’t quite match his usual image, Ruby Sullivan couldn’t help but frown.
She thought to herself that this man probably didn’t have much of a youthful phase, as his taste in clothes outside of formal attire was not commendable.
Ethan Sterling only received a call from Howard and didn’t see her. He swiftly took a large, heavy bouquet of roses from the trunk, looked at it while cradling it in his arms, and was overwhelmed by the strong fragrance, causing him to wrinkle his nose.
Ruby Sullivan couldn’t help but laugh as she watched his face scrunch up like a steamed bun.
It was after work hours, and with such a handsome man standing at The Sterling Group’s entrance, it naturally attracted attention. Initially, young employees were curious to see if it might be a proposal, but as soon as they recognized his face, they quickly stood off at a distance, not daring to unabashedly gossip about their boss.
Just then, Young also walked out of the elevator, saw the boss smiling foolishly while looking outside, came over, and followed her gaze. Unable to hold back, he exclaimed, "That’s so romantic."
Ruby Sullivan was startled by the sudden voice and turned her head to see that it was Young, feeling a bit embarrassed.
Young smiled, "Well, I’ll get going then."
Ruby Sullivan nodded.
As Young walked a few steps, he kindly turned back and said to her, "Claire and Tina will be down soon too." Then he walked out quickly, and even greeted Ethan Sterling.
The moment before, Ethan Sterling was still frowning at the roses, but he instinctively looked up towards the lobby and, upon seeing her, immediately broke into a smile.
Ruby Sullivan, thinking of the two youngsters coming down behind, suddenly felt a headache and quickly walked out, "What’s going on?"
"Picking you up from work." Ethan Sterling handed over the flowers, "Do you like them?"
Ruby Sullivan, inhaling the pungent preservative scent, felt a bit awkward, "Uh... I’ll just put them in the trunk first."
"Sure, that works." Ethan Sterling also thought the bouquet wasn’t quite suitable to have inside the car.
Once they were seated in the car, Ruby Sullivan finally understood why Howard had looked so awkward, and she couldn’t help but find it amusing, "Why did you give me flowers?"
"Nothing much." Ethan Sterling focused on driving, and once they were on the main road, he continued, "My talk with Naomi Sinclair this afternoon went very smoothly, and I feel it was all thanks to you, so I wanted to give you a gift." He wandered around the mall for ages but didn’t know what to buy.
For him, choosing the right gift for a woman seemed harder than confronting The Lawson Group. Suddenly, he remembered that she had once complained about never receiving flowers, so he had a sudden idea to give her a bouquet and even bought a youthful outfit specifically for it.
"Haven’t you always regretted not having a proper romantic relationship?" Ethan Sterling was somewhat shy in mentioning this and didn’t continue.
He wanted to dress more youthfully to give her a feeling of being in a relationship.
Ruby Sullivan tilted her head to look at him and laughed softly, "Yep, thank you."
She had initially thought to say that nobody gives flowers in relationships these days, it’s so outdated, but seeing his very earnest and shy demeanor, she swallowed her words. Even if he were scheming again, she’d accept it.
They went to pack the food Honey wanted to eat and headed to the hospital to have dinner with her.
Dr. Lawson said that Honey’s condition this time was more optimistic than expected and that she could be discharged by the weekend.
Coincidentally, Leon Sterling was returning from overseas on Friday, and they could bring Honey home in the evening. If Naomi Sinclair didn’t mind, she intended to invite her over on Saturday for a dinner with their whole family.
Though there wasn’t any particular reason, she just felt that Naomi Sinclair seemed a bit lonely and might enjoy the lively atmosphere.
Honey was especially happy to hear that she could be discharged the next day.
"Then I’ll go tell Grandpa Three tomorrow." Honey murmured to herself.
"Grandpa Three?" Ruby Sullivan was somewhat puzzled. How did her daughter end up with a grandpa after just two or three days away?
Seth explained from the side, "Grandpa Three is a patient recuperating in the hospital. He finds our ward lively, so he often comes to chat with Vivian."
Ruby Sullivan and Ethan Sterling couldn’t help but look curiously at Vivian, who was eating and suddenly paused, looking up at the gazes of her son and daughter-in-law, confused, "What’s the matter?"
Ruby Sullivan saw Seth signaling with his eyes and cheerfully said, "Nothing."
Ethan Sterling quickly withdrew his gaze and continued eating.
Given Vivian’s looks and character, Ruby Sullivan thought it wouldn’t be odd if she were like in the movies, going on dates with young handsome guys even younger than her son. But after Mr. Sterling passed, she remained single.
Admittedly, the hospital wasn’t an ideal place to make friends, but fortunately, this was at Mercy, so if he was recuperating here, it probably wasn’t due to any grave illness.
The next day, after finishing her routine check-ups, Honey went to Grandpa Three’s room with Seth.
He was wearing reading glasses, perusing the newspaper. Despite the gray hair and slightly receding hairline, his thick eyebrows and bright eyes still exuded charm. Upon seeing the two children, he immediately set the newspaper aside, smiling warmly, "What story do you want to hear today?"
Honey sat beside him with a smile, "Grandpa Three, I’m getting discharged tonight, so I won’t be able to come every day to listen to your stories anymore."
Upon hearing this, Grandpa Three’s warm face suddenly showed a hint of disappointment, "Oh, Honey is getting discharged... Discharge is good." But he couldn’t muster up happiness.
"Grandpa Three, why are you staying in the hospital if you’re not sick?" Seth had been wanting to ask this question for a while.
Grandpa Three chuckled, "The environment here is nice, and the food is quite tasty." In truth, he initially planned to stay here for a week to rest and also get a heart check-up. But then, the day before discharge, he met Vivian.
"The food here is far from what Mom makes." Honey, imagining the scene back home, smiled goofily, "But since Mom is too busy, I usually eat more of Vivian’s cooking."
Grandpa Three was surprised, "Vivian knows how to cook?"
"Of course, though it’s not as good as Mom’s, it still tastes quite nice," Honey honestly replied, finishing as a familiar cough was heard.
