Chapter 70: Don’t say weird things, child

Valerie stared at Tiana who was beaming in front of her with so much excitement that the rays penetrated through her dark shades.

"Darling, I’m glad I can be present at your wedding at least." Tiana said. "Glad I didn’t miss it, right?" She smiled brightly and Valerie smiled as well, taking off her mask.

"Right."

"But to think you’ll have to have your wedding in such a way. Tsk, the whole world will be watching but it’s not going to have that special feeling because of the disturbance." She added, and sighed, letting go of the annoyance. "Anyway, was there a reason why you two decided to get married so early, amidst the commotion? You could’ve at least waited till things had died down. That way, you would get that special feeling while doing it all at once."

"I couldn’t wait." Max said to his mother as he approached them and stood behind Valerie. "I was just in a hurry to get married and make her mine. I also didn’t want an unforeseen force to take her away from me, so it worked out fine." He dropped his chin on her shoulder, staring with dreamy eyes. "Isn’t that right, wifey?"

Valerie blinked. It seems he didn’t tell her what she feared but he did tell her about the revenge against Lucy and why he was close to her.

That must’ve been reassuring because she was already fearing that her son was a cheater.

Glad he told her that at least, but... did he have to be so close to make a point?

"Don’t mind him, mother." Valerie said and gently pushed his face away from her shoulder. "He was just scared that those people would try something and I’d actually end up dead." She laughed it off but they weren’t laughing.

They stared at her seriously because she mentioned death.

"Darling." Tiana called and took off the shades, exposing her lovely ruby eyes. "I hate to know that the reason you have to hide your identity like this is because of those people." She said and gently caressed her face. "Your eyes, they symbolize a lot, yet you have to hide them every time you go out. It’s not fair."

"Life’s not fair, mother." Valerie said, holding her hand against her face. "That’s why we ought to charge in and snatch all the privileges before someone else does."

"Ah, spoken like a true Ross." Tiana said and changed the topic. "So, did you find a gown that caught your eye? It’s going to be your first and last wedding, so you ought to go all out. Give them something other than the revenge to talk about, if you get what I’m saying." She winked.

"What?" Valerie looked stunned. "My first and last? How did you know that?"

"Don’t say weird things, child. We all know marriage is for a lifetime. What? Were you planning on getting married every year?" Tiana asked and suddenly got an idea, pinching her chin. "Hm, that’s not a bad idea either." She said. "We could always celebrate your anniversary as a grand wedding each year."

"I like your thinking, Mom. I, for one, would like nothing less from the best." Max added and they both cackled to their insane ideas.

Valerie watched them and sighed in relief. For a moment, she thought Tiana was talking about the contract. But that was impossible since she didn’t know about it.

’Right, I’m just being paranoid.’ she thought to herself and raised her head, pushing her worries behind her shoulder for now. "Please, let’s try not to go too extreme." She said, shutting down their insane ideas of holding a wedding each year to commemorate their anniversary. "As for the wedding gown," she stepped closer and pointed at Max’s shoulder. "You’re the only one who can get it for me."

"I am the one paying for it, after all." He said but she shook her head.

"No, this is different." She said. "The dress that was designed for Lucy, I want it." She was straightforward.

"Hm, I had a hunch that you would choose that and that was why I had them put it on full display." He said. "Well, did you like it?"

"I like it And that’s why I want it." She said in an authoritative tone but then shook her head and changed her tone. "Please, just get it for me."

"Is that the way to beg?" Max asked, suddenly wrapping his arms around her and leaning in to snicker in her ear. "You need to be more sincere, wifey."

"Ahem." Tiana immediately cleared her throat and said, "Spare my eyes and just get your wife what she wants."

Max glanced at his mother with a cunning smile and said,

"Of course, I’ll get it for her. But I’ll need her to give something in return." He said and Tiana shook her head, placing her hand on her head as though she had come down with a headache.

"I can’t deal with this. You’re as petty as they come. Go on, do whatever you want. I’ll be out in the car in the meantime." She said and made her way to the door while Valerie’s face slightly flushed from embarrassment. "Just don’t overdo it." She said and closed the door after herself, shaking her head in wonder. "Kids these days. They’re so handsy."

She thought back at her old days when she was so close to her husband who had currently remarried. She couldn’t blame him for anything, rather, she felt she had a lot to atone for as she had betrayed him with her acts as well.

"What am I thinking right now?" She laughed at her thoughts. "He’s better off not knowing I’m alright."

Max watched the door and then turned his attention back to Valerie, slipping his hand inside her top.

"Shall we continue from where we left off?" He asked, excited, but she was fuming, embarrassed and angry.

She grabbed his hand and elbowed him so hard that he crouched his back, clutching his side.

She dusted her hands and went to sit.

"If I don’t use my mouth to say it, it’s not complaining, right?" She asked, her eyes bleeding danger like a tigress, and Max, through the pain from his side, grinned like a maniac. He liked this.

The way he was staring at her... She was certain he was even more aroused by the rejection. She placed her hand on her head and sighed.

"Just go and do something about the gown. Once we get back to your house, I’ll..." She tilted her head to the side. "I’ll make sure to show you all the reactions you long to see." She said and Max laughed.

"You better not regret it, wife." He said and made his way out.

Once he was gone, Valerie gave out another sigh and looked up a the ceiling. That was so embarrassing. She couldn’t believe she let Tiana see that. Max was really out of control, gosh.
