Chapter 65: Things from the past

As soon as the servant led Max to the restroom, he got called away and apologized that he would have to see to some other matter, hoping he could make his way back to the dining table himself.

To this, Max smiled and said,

"No worries. I’ll go back on my own. Thank you for your hard work." He said, and the servant went away feeling at ease.

Once he was gone, Max’s lips curled up in a grin. Just what he wanted.

He got out of the restroom and checked both sides to make sure there was no one looking after him.

’Ross, you’re damn careless.’ he thought and swiftly made his way to Valerie’s room. True to the servant’s words, the room was not locked.

He opened the door, glanced around, and then closed it. The room was plain, having been cleared out. They wasted no time in clearing out all of Valerie’s possessions and nothing was left behind.

He just hoped the laptop was where Valerie said it’d be.

He went towards her wardrobe and opened it. He said he’d call for further explanation because he couldn’t grasp what she said, but just looking at it now, he seemed to understand her explanation.

The floor of the wardrobe had a hidden compartment that one would not notice with bare eyes. He used his hands to feel the surface and found the opening.

’She was very cautious about her hiding spot. I wonder what is in her laptop.’ he thought to himself and finally opened the compartment, only to find that the laptop wasn’t the only thing there.

There was a sweet wrapper, one he used to be familiar with. Then there was a dried-up rose, a pencil, a letter, and other little things that appeared childish before one’s eyes.

But those things weren’t as childish as one would think.

He picked up the letter, saw the handwriting at the front, and clenched his teeth.

What the hell was this? Was she serious? Why would she keep all these things for so long? These things... They were the things he gave her when they were dating. What was the meaning of this?

"Are you shitting me right now?" He growled, squeezing the letter. "This is some sort of joke, right? Valerie, do you think you can play me with this?"

He didn’t know what she meant by keeping all these things but he wasn’t going to fall for it. She was capable of planning a long-term scheme as insurance for what was to come. He told himself.

He wouldn’t let this sway him or give him some delusional thoughts.

His phone rang and he picked it up. He listened to the caller while looking at the things in the compartment and his eyes darkened.

"Good." He responded and cut the call.

He left everything as they were and took the laptop.

As soon as he opened the door, he came face to face with a servant waiting for him with his head down. It was Jeremy disguised as a servant.

He entrusted the laptop to him and they both walked their separate ways, going in opposite directions.

"Oh, what took you so long?" Lucy asked, getting up from her seat. "I was getting worried."

Max was a bit out of it from what he had seen but tried not to let his bad mood show and smiled.

"Sorry to worry you." He said. "But it’s getting late so I’ll take my leave now."

"So soon?" She asked, looking at the time. She was disappointed. She wished he would spend more time with her but it seemed there wouldn’t be possible. "O-okay. I’ll walk you out."

"No, there’s no need." Max said, "You shouldn’t strain yourself like this." He sounded polite but just couldn’t stand the thought of her holding on to him again. "Then, I’ll take my leave."

He turned and started leaving without saying anything more.

Lucy was a bit lost for words but she couldn’t say anything and simply gritted her teeth in frustration, dropping the shy and soft girl act right away.

She believed he liked her but there were times when he was so distant that she grew frustrated.

’No matter, I’ll just have to close the gap between us before we get married.’ she thought and snickered.

Max kept his gaze outside the window. He was lost in thoughts, thinking about different things.

He had his beliefs and was sure Valerie put those things there to spite him and have delusions but then he couldn’t help but wonder how she did it. There was no way she had time to do any of that after she was convicted.

And she couldn’t predict such a thing to happen, so how did she do it?

He tucked his hand inside his pocket and brought out the wrapper. He left everything as they were, aside from the wrapper. He checked the expiration date but still couldn’t convince himself.

He could easily conclude that every other thing we’re made up to spite him but this wrapper had an old expiration date. And even if this could be acquired by some means, the letter he gave her... The letter with his handwriting and the cancelations he made when trying to make it perfect... they were all proof.

He didn’t understand because it didn’t make sense to him.

Just why would Valerie keep the things he gave her for over seven years? What did she stand to gain from doing that?

’Valerie Ross, the closer I get to you, the harder it gets to read you. Just what goes on in that head of yours?’

Valerie, who had completely forgotten that in that secret compartment was all her heart’s secret, slept peacefully with her windows open.

Max walked in and sat on the bed with her, slowly sliding her hair behind her ear to get a clear view of her face.

"Hm, Max." Valerie called and he flinched. Did he wake her? "Did you wash your hands?" She asked with her still closed. "You have a disgusting scent on you."
