Chasing The Vengeful Villainous Heiress-Chapter 41: I need you
Valerie sat next to Max who wouldn’t let go of her hand. She glanced at him and saw that he was looking delighted. Was what she said about relying on him for life really that good to hear? She did add the fact about the contract, did he not mind?
Maybe she should say more things like that in the future. It might reduce the chances of him getting angry.
"We’re here." Jeremy announced from the driver’s seat and Valerie looked out the window. Where was ’here’?
"You must be hungry so I brought you out to eat." Max said and truly, he had brought her to a restaurant.
But how did he know? She didn’t remember her stomach rumbling at any time.
Being with him made her forget she was hungry too, so how was he able to figure it out?
"It’s already afternoon. You shouldn’t skip meals." He said, and she realized he didn’t know she hadn’t eaten anything all morning. Rather, he didn’t want her to skip out on afternoon meals.
This was fine too.
She attempted to open the door but he stopped her and said,
"Do you plan to go out like that?" He asked and she tilted her head, confused. "Your face is all over the internet right now." He said he she exclaimed,
"Oh." She slowly let go of the door and sat back. ’Not that I’m not already used to it but I want to eat in peace. Is that too much to ask?’ she sighed.
"How about this?" Max suggested Jeremy go in and order the food in takeout and let her eat it in the car.
"Are you sure about that? You have to be in your family’s house soon."
"It’s not so big of a deal. I’m sure my old man just has a few things to say." He said, "And if I use you as an excuse, he’ll probably go easy on me."
He said with a carefree tone, and given the way he acted with his grandfather that night of the party, she could tell they had quite the relationship. They were close.
It made her melancholic. She never had someone to treat her like that. There was one but it didn’t last, thanks to her cousin who wanted to play with a riffle. So she never really enjoyed it.
’If he sees the news, will he be disappointed in me?’ Valerie thought. ’He probably won’t look at me with those nice eyes again.’
"My grandfather is not one to judge by what he hears." Max suddenly said and she raised her head. He seemed to understand her worry and she looked away.
She’d be thankful if that were the case.
"How did you manage to get so close to my old man anyway?" He asked, leaning his chin on his palm. "If you had his support, I don’t think you’d need me for anything."
"I need you." She suddenly blurted out, shocking herself and him. His lips curled up, amused. That was completely unexpected. "I mean," she cleared her throat, "It wouldn’t have been the same. He wouldn’t be able to interfere naturally like you since you are my husband and you’re entitled to interfere."
"Hm, that so?" He still looked amused even when she was doing her best to stay calm and not show any form of flustering. "Then, tell me, how did you come to meet my old man?"
Valerie went silent, remembering the meal she had with him. It was hearty and relaxing.
"I bought him a meal." She said but that was too vague for him to understand. But before he could ask further, Jeremy returned with the food.
Valerie shifted her attention from him and to the food she was starving and the food smelled so good.
"Wow, you really must’ve been hungry." He said but she simply nodded and unwrapped the food.
He watched her eat and halfway, she asked,
"You said it yourself, it’s afternoon. Won’t you eat as well?" She asked but he shook his head.
"No need. I feel satisfied just watching you." He said and though she didn’t understand how he was able to feel satisfied just watching her eat, she went on to continue eating.
And then his phone rang. He picked it up and saw it was his grandfather.
"Ah, it seems I hit the nail on the head." He said, referring to the fact that it was his grandfather who wanted to talk to him. "Hello,"
"What am I seeing on the news?" Mr Leo asked, "Is she okay?"
"Well, aside from slitting her own hand, she’s okay... I guess." Max asked with so much disinterest in his tone.
He wondered why his grandfather was asking about such a pretender but he actually got it wrong and this got Mr Leo angry.
"What is going on in that head of yours? I’m talking about Valerie. Is she okay?" He asked and Max glanced at Valerie who was still eating, knowing he had made a mistake, and said,
"My bad. She’s alright. Just a bruise on her face but she’s fine."
"How can she be fine? This is a big accusation?" He said. "Are you still in the police station? Should I have someone get her out?"
"You worry too much, old man. I already said she’s alright." He said and an idea suddenly struck him. "Just to settle your worried heart, I will bring her to you. Happy?"
Valerie flinched. She knew all along that they were talking about her but she didn’t expect Max to suddenly suggest such a thing.
She saw him grinning at her and wondered what he was planning.
"Yes, old man. I’m on my way." He said and cut the call, his eyes brimming with delight. "Good news, you don’t need to spend the night in that horrible mansion."
"What?" She was even more confused. What did his grandfather say to him? Was he the one who suggested this?
"If you have any questions, feel free to ask ky old man once we get there. After all, he absolutely adores you."
"Wait, I don’t think this is a good idea." She said, "The mansion doesn’t just have your grandfather in it and while he may believe me, the same can’t be said for the others?"
"And what do the others have to do with this?" He asked in a cold voice and she paused. "If my grandfather favors you, there’s nothing they can do about it, even if you’re the devil himself."
Valerie went silent. She could see the blood running in their veins to be thicker than she thought. They were so alike, doing whatever they liked without thinking of the consequences.
She sighed.
"Alright. I’ll just call Frankie and let her know I won’t be coming back to the mansion tonight." She said and took out her phone to dial Frankie’s number but suspiciously, there was no response.
"Hm, seems your precious assistant is slacking off somewhere." Max said but Valerie could not simply shrug it as such.
Frankie would never ignore her calls, even when she was in the bathroom.
"She must’ve left her phone somewhere. Try calling her later." He said and she decided to do that. But for some reason, she had a strange foreboding deep in her chest.
The uneasiness that came with Frankie missing her call was a bit strange.
