Chasing The Vengeful Villainous Heiress-Chapter 40: Who you rely on
Valerie got up from Maximus and adjusted herself like nothing had happened, all the while wishing she had more time to continue what she was doing.
’What a shame?’ She thought, a little disappointed as they slowly started leaving the beach, striding slowly on the sand.
She looked at her hand in Max’s. He held her hand and led her, with the excuse that if he let her walk on her own, she would take forever to catch up.
And he didn’t want to carry her either, fearing she would say something to ruin his mood again.
But in reality, he just wanted to take a walk on the beach while holding hands. Yet, he could never admit that.
Valerie felt their case was similar to a loving couple, though not knowing it was his intentions, and felt her heart race. It was warm having him look at her like this, having him treat her like one would do to a normal lover but she could not enjoy it to the fullest because of her mouth that could spill out something maddening any moment.
Max was a ticking time bomb. She couldn’t afford to provoke a bomb and ended up getting hurt by it. Well, that was the aim of this whole thing, wasn’t it? To hurt her like she hurt him.
But on second thought, she began to wonder, did she really hurt him that much for him to hold so much hatred in his heart and keep a grudge for over seven years?
Those thugs... They weren’t even sent by her so why did she have to suffer seeing hate in the eyes of the man she loved?
It was painful.
Well, she would bear with it. Bear with it and take whatever hurt he made her feel, hoping to atone for what she actually did. Even if she didn’t send those thugs, she still hurt him and broke his heart at that time so she was still guilty.
Max glanced at Valerie who had such a hurt expression on her face that it made him frown. What was she thinking of now? He hated that expression if it wasn’t made by him.
Who was it that was occupying her mind while she was with him?
He got mad and squeezed her hand, causing her to slightly wince and look up to see his furrowed eyebrows.
"You seem to really have a lot of worries, seeing as you can think of something else while you’re with me." He said and she looked at him with a sort of pained expression.
Only if he knew.
He was the only one who could occupy her mind and make her have all sorts of expressions. She shook her head.
"I’m thinking if I should call Frankie." She said and Max stopped.
"And why is that?"
"I left her in the mansion again. Those people could do anything to me and it’s the same for the only person who’s on my side." She said but Max was not okay with this.
"What do you mean? Am I not on your side?" He asked, his grip on her hand tightening more and though it hurt, she bore with it and shook her head.
"I meant in the mansion." She said. "She’s the only one who is on my side in that mansion. The only one I can rely on there."
Max went silent. The word, ’the only one I can rely on’ was what registered in his head. So, he wasn’t the only one? His insides felt shitty and he wanted Valerie to wipe those words out of her mouth but he couldn’t say it like that.
She probably said it because Frankie had been with her for a long time now. Frankie... Was occupying a space in Valerie’s heart. He squinted his eyes, scanning Valerie properly. So she cared for his girl, was that it?
He let go of her hand and covered his face. Okay, there was someone other than him that took a space in her heart, that was cute. But what would happen if that someone wasn’t there anymore?
"Max?" Valerie called, snapping him out of his psychotic thought and she said, "I may rely on Valerie in that mansion but you’re the only one who can truly help me. You’re the only one who I can put my hopes on."
He was silent and then asked,
"Why is that?"
"Though Frankie and I have been together for a long time, we both pursue revenge and that’s the only reason we’re together." She rubbed her bruised hand. "Humans can change once they get their heart’s desire so the best way to make them loyal would be to bind them." She raised her head to meet his gaze. "In our case, we’re both bound by a contract so even if do get what we want, we have to stay together for life. Even if I don’t trust that you’ll be on my side till the end, I can trust the contract."
Max was silent. Not exactly the reason he was pining for, but it’ll do. He hugged her while smiling broadly.
To know that she depended on him more than anything in the world, even if it was simply thanks to the contract, it was just so delightful.
Valerie felt relieved. She didn’t know why but when he asked about Frankie, she felt he was acting suspicious and feared for Frankie. Her words were true but she actually held Frankie more closely than she thought and wouldn’t want anything to happen to her.
She looked at her hand. It was red and she could practically feel her hand beating there. It was throbbing.
Yet, she couldn’t stop feeling excited about it. Was there something wrong with her? Ah, whatever. It must just be a rush of adrenaline.
Jeremy watched them. He was standing by the car already and seeing them acting like this, being all huggy and familiar with each other, he felt his master had been bewitched by the beauty of this evil woman and was slowly falling into her hands.
But on the contrary, Valerie was the one who had been bewitched and was slowly falling into Maximus’ hand.
