Chapter 42: How could Max like someone so plain?

On the way to Stewart’s family house, Valerie fell asleep. She wasn’t exactly one to fall asleep so easily but she was a bit exhausted from all that was going on and because the person next to her was Max, she had a dream about him.

More like a dream from their high school days. The time she took his hand for the first time.

******

After that encounter on the rooftop, Valerie started avoiding Maximus. She felt uncomfortable because there were feelings she didn’t understand swelling up in her heart.

She didn’t understand them and could never bring herself to ask anyone about it, not even Frankie who was just in the next class.

Though they were going to the same school together, they never interacted since Valerie asked that she be given her space. And if people knew they were connected, they would definitely disturb Frankie about her.

It was a hassle.

Yet another bigger hassle had presented itself.

Max who had been concerned about his actions, wanted to apologize for suddenly stealing a kiss like that, even if it felt like she wanted it that too.

He kept glancing at her, trying to meet her gaze and when they did, Valerie would be the first to look away. He watched her everywhere. Inside the class, sports activities, lunch, and so on.

It even became noticeable to his clique of friends who were always around him. Max eyes were always on Valerie.

"Dude, do you really like her?" One asked. He was a big guy with quite a loud personality and a sports enthusiast. His name was Brian but most people called him Busky.

Max looked away from Valerie and turned to him, wondering about it. Did he like Valerie? He was sure he found her interesting and wanted to know more about her. Wanted to get in her space burble, something like that.

Was that considered liking her?

Well, if he desired to lock lips with her, that would be considered liking, right?

He couldn’t ask and didn’t want to ask either. He’d figure it out... Somehow.

"She’s definitely pretty but she doesn’t socialize much." Another guy said.

This guy, like Brian, was also a sports enthusiast but he was more crazy about football than anything else. His name was Lance.

"You don’t know what she’s like so how do you like her so much that you can never keep your eyes off her?" Lucina asked and a confused Max looked at them oddly.

"No way, don’t tell me you don’t even know your own habits." Brian said, seeing it as funny.

"Do I look at her so much?" Max asked, rubbing the back of his neck in oblivion and they both laughed.

"Dude, your eyes are always fixed on her. How do you think we noticed you like her?" They laughed but Max hadn’t noticed at all.

He knew he looked at her from time to time but he didn’t know he did it so often.

"She’s smart but cold and though she’s pretty, I think she’d be better off making friends."

"Hey, no one would like to make friends with an ice queen."

They laughed but Max did not think it was right for them to speak like that. But before he could reprimand them, Valerie slammed her book on her table, causing them to all quiet down immediately.

She suddenly got up, glared at them, picked up her books, and started leaving. She was better off reading at a library than in this classroom that sounded like a hyena den.

Once she was gone, they turned to Max who suddenly got mad and got up.

"We shouldn’t talk about someone like that. Especially if you know the person won’t feel comfortable about it." He said and made his way to the door.

He stood still for a second and sighed. How was he going to apologize to her now?

He opened the door and walked out.

Meanwhile, one of the students, a girl named Mia who had her eyes on Max, did not like what she heard. How could Max like someone so plain?

It was impossible, right?

Yet, she too had noticed that he was always staring at her. Though his eyes were not like that of admiration, it was like he was trying to figure her out. Just like one would stare at a puzzle, trying to find its answers.

’That’s right, he just finds her odd.’ she thought. ’He doesn’t like her. If he wants to like someone, I’m sure he’ll like me first.’

She deluded herself with those thoughts but when the look in Max’s eyes turned from trying to figure her out to wanting to get her attention, she grew red with furry and so she decided to act.

After school one day, while Valerie stayed back to clean the classroom with two others, she got apprehended.

"We would like to talk to you." Said the girls who were on duty with her and she looked at the blackboard.

If they wasted any more time, they would definitely not get the whole thing cleaned up properly. She would just agree for now and get things over with before hearing them out.

She didn’t want to go home early anyway.

"Alright. Once we’re done, we’ll go talk." She said and they felt they had achieved something.

Once the classroom was cleaned, the girls led Valerie toward the auditorium.

It was quite a suspicious place to just ’talk’ and so, she already knew that this was not going to be an ordinary talk.

She decided to record everything. If they tried to harm her, she would have evidence to sue them, so she turned on a voice recorder on her phone.

"Where exactly are we going?" Valerie asked, "You said you wanted to talk."

"Yeah. We want to talk. But it’s sort of embarrassing so let’s go to the auditorium. No one would hear us there." One of the girls said, hoping Valerie would not suddenly run off but given how calm she was, they kicked her as a fool.

Though they were the fools who would soon put themselves in trouble.

"You said your names were?" She asked.

"Uh..." they exchanged glances, wondering if it was okay to tell her their names. But even if she had their names, it wasn’t like anyone would suddenly believe her if they were all against her.

"Right, our names. It’s funny how we’ve been in the same class for a while semester but you don’t know our names. Anyway, my name is Stacy and this is Beatrice." Stacy introduced.

"Right." Valerie said, glad that they were dumb enough to introduce themselves.
