Chapter 35: The interrogation room

(A QUICK REMINDER: Tom is the lawyer who held on to her family’s will. The same guy that helped her when she was five years old. Refer back to Chapter 3 and yes, he bears the same name as Maximus’ secretary but don’t worry, he’ll be scarce so there won’t be much confusion)

Valerie sat quietly with her hands cuffed. She was alone in an interrogation room, waiting to be interrogated and also waiting for her lawyer, Freddy. He was a person Tom had sent to help her on many occasions as she visited the police station quite a lot.

Her face had been treated and patched since her uncle hit her really hard. Her precious lip was torn too.

Then, her stomach grumbled. She was hungry. After all, she never got to have her breakfast since someone had to make a show so early in the morning. What a nuisance that was for her.

There was no hope for breakfast anymore so she decided to think ahead.

"Hm, what should I have for lunch?" She wondered and at that moment, an officer walked in.

"You’re worried about something like that when you’re in this situation?" He asked and she briefly glanced at him before throwing her face away.

"What would you have me do?" She asked, "Cry and plead innocent?"

"Yes, maybe for once. You’re always too calm." He said and sat down in the chair opposite hers. "So, Miss Valerie, where’s the evidence this time?"

"Well, Mr Dumitru, it seems you’re no longer as dumb as you were a couple of weeks ago," Valerie responded and he placed his notepad down, scratching his scalp with his pen.

"Please, I’ve seen way too many of your cases to be certain that you’re the victim, again. But this time, you were caught in the act, according to witnesses, and the wound was pretty deep, enough to get you convicted of murder. You’ll need a lot more to free yourself of these charges."

"I am well aware." Valerie said. "They just want to make me out to be a crazy killer. Sigh. Well, come closer and take the evidence."

His pen fell from his hand and onto his notepad as he stared in shock.

"Pardon?"

Valerie tilted her head, her gaze boring into his soul.

"Come over and get the evidence."

"Ahem, Miss Ross, you’re such a fine young lady but I don’t think..."

Valerie looked at him as he avoided her gaze with a flustered expression. What was this police officer thinking?

"I take back what I said." She said, "You’re indeed dumb. The evidence is in my phone and my phone is in my pocket. Thanks to my cuffed hands, I can’t get it by myself so come over and get it. Did I really have to explain that to you?"

Dumitru stared quietly, trying to process what he just heard and by the time he did, his face flushed red and he apologized.

"My apologies, I just thought..." He shook his head. "It was stupid of me."

He got up and went to take the phone.

"Pardon me." He said and took the phone out of her pocket.

"Give it to me, I’ll show it to you. You can’t look at anything other than what I show you if not I’ll sue you for the invasion of privacy." She coldly threatened and Dumitru gulped.

Dumitru was over 33 years old. He had been training to be a cop his whole life and though he was a bit gullible for his age and profession, he tried to toughen up.

He was doing well so far. That is, till he met Valerie. AKA, the villainess of the century. She had so many bad rumors going on about her and her nonchalance made him believe they were true.

Yet each time she visited the prison, she always left that same day, Scott free. He always thought she was pulling strings somehow but there weren’t any strings to pull as she always came with concrete evidence to prove her innocence.

He didn’t believe it though. But then he was put in charge of her interrogation about a year ago.

He had to face the Villainess and told himself he would not be swayed by her schemes and would root out the evil but to his utmost surprise, she did have evidence.

And not just some scraps, solid proof that showed she was innocent.

He thought of it as luck the first three times but then it became so constant that he started believing they were all fabricated. Yet the incident that happened a few weeks ago finally convinced him that was indeed just an innocent girl, always being framed by the people using her family name.

But he always wondered how she was able to get her hands on so much concrete evidence before getting accused.

He wasn’t the only one curious though. His uncle was equally curious how Valerie was able to walk away each time and could not even get any solid information as the entire police force was under Tom’s jurisdiction.

And the matter was always passed as Valerie used her status and bribed her way out of jail time.

"I’ll take this to the others." Dumitru said as he made his way to the door. "For now, wait for your lawyer as usual, so it’ll seem everything was settled with bills."

"I got it." She said and rested her back on the chair, thinking. "Hm, what would be good? Steak or pasta?"

All she could think of right now was how to fill her belly and pass the time by sleeping. The next few days will be hectic with the news spreading that Valerie Ross has struck again.

"I should finish that edition in the meantime." She mumbled, referring to the new edition romance novels Frankie got.

Just as she found her passion for romance books, Frankie also found her love for romance books so they shared the books among themselves and sometimes shared stories as normal girls would do.

Frankie was practically the only person who knew her best since they had been together since they were ten years old. However, they did not start off as friends as Valerie was jealous of the affection she received.

But they naturally grew close in their quest to her back at Lucas and his family for what they did to Madam Nazar.

"Am I too late?" She heard a familiar voice which jolted her out of her thoughts and she looked towards the door. Standing behind it was a person she knew too well. "I’m here to pick you up."

Valerie was stunned as she stared at the door. His voice... She couldn’t get over it. Now that was one person she was so jealous of that she started hating him for no reason at first, before realizing that the hate she felt had become that of love.

The door opened and Max, with a proud grin on his lips and wearing a police officers uniform, walked in, completed his words and said,

"That is, if you’ll let me."

Yeah, she was very jealous of him at first and hated his smile.

"What are you doing here?"
