Chasing The Vengeful Villainous Heiress-Chapter 36: Sharing warmth
During Valerie’s first year of high school, she met Max, who originally schooled in a really popular private school. But for some reason, he transferred to her ordinary school.
Valerie went to a normal school. One reason was that she didn’t want to be in the same space or building as Lucy. At that time, Lucy’s acts were very disgusting and she didn’t want to put up with her hypocrisy while studying.
Max got in the same class with her and got all the attention since he was such a handsome guy, always smiling and always having a great day. And thus, he was surrounded by a lot of people who wanted to be his friend, even if they had no idea he was from a rich family.
Valerie hid her identity and wore glasses that changed her eye colors. She couldn’t wear lenses because they were uncomfortable and she was scared that some substance would be added to make her go blind. Literally.
That family was very much capable of doing such a thing.
She hated Max. She hated him because of the way he was. He was too bright. She was the gloomy one in the class, always by herself and sticking to small talk alone, never participating in anything. She was uninterested and unsociable.
Her words were simple and straight but if you didn’t understand, you were very much on your own because she wouldn’t explain twice.
And because she was the only one who did not go to Max after he transferred, it was pretty easy for him to spot her.
The beautiful girl at the back who kept to herself. Now, he’d like to know what such a girl was thinking on a daily basis.
One day, during lunchtime, Max walked up to Valerie and handed her a snack.
As soon as she saw it, her face contorted and she frowned. She ignored him, got up, and walked out of him. The boys whistled at Max being stood up but also consoled him since Valerie was like that to everyone. Yet, this only made him want to get close to her more.
She had a vibe that made him feel she was a different breed from every other person in the school. That she did not belong there. A breed like him. Her calmness and indifference were what attracted him most.
In any case, he was interested in her and wanted to get to know her but she was not one to give in to simple persuasion and persistence.
She would hear him talk about his parents and his little sister to the people around him. He sounded so alive and joyful. His family also sounded like a happy family and that made her hate him more.
The fact that he had what she could not and would never have... It infuriated her. 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺
The best thing would be to keep her distance from such a person but he kept running after her and one day, she burst in front of him.
"Stop! Just stop it!" She yelled at him. But even her yelling was calm, compared to the way others would burst out in fury.
Luckily, they were on a rooftop so no one was there to witness the outburst of the indifferent and silent Valerie.
"Can you stop acting like you know me? Stop trying to talk to me. It makes me sick."
Max was silent and confused. They didn’t even know each other so why was she so upset?
"How and why?" He asked, staring at her with glazed eyes.
"Ugh. It makes me sick that you have so much light around you. Is that better?" She said to him but that didn’t quite add up for him to understand, so he said,
"Valerie, I don’t understand."
"Maximus, stop disturbing my life. Why don’t you just go back to where you came from? Go and never come back because your presence disturbs me."
"Why though?" He asked, "All I want is to get to know you more."
"And I don’t want that." She stated, her eyebrows furrowing in displeasure.
"Is there something I do that upsets you?" He asked, feeling clueless and having a sweat roll down his forehead.
"Everything." She answered. "Your everything upsets me. Just because you have so much love and so many people to shower you with affection, it doesn’t mean you can go around flaunting it and making the people who lacked all these things miserable. It’s already unfair that the world smiles at the likes of you and gives you so much, why do you have to rub it off on others?" She clenched her fists.
Max was speechless. What was this? He never meant to make anybody feel miserable. He just talked because he liked his family a lot. They weren’t the very best when it came to peace but at least they loved him.
He didn’t know talking about it would make her feel so... Helpless.
"You’re acting like the world revolves around you. Like there’s nothing but light but it’s not. This world is dark and cruel and seeing you take life so easily... It makes me want to kill you." She spat out as if hiding the words under her breath.
Max frowned. Now that he had a good comprehension of what her feelings were, maybe he could tackle this issue and finally break her wall.
"But can you, though?" He asked her.
"What?"
He took a step towards her.
"If I gave you a knife, do you think you’ll be able to stab me?"
"What are you talking about?" She asked, retreating her steps as he advanced towards her.
"Valerie, I don’t know why you feel this way, but..." He got closer to her and reached his hand out, swiping her hair back. "If it’s affection you lack, why don’t you open up and let others shower you with it?"
"As if the world that has shown me nothing but bitterness, would ever show me love? No one can give me the warmth I desire." She confessed and threw her face away, feeling anguish.
Speaking about to hurt more than she thought but she felt a bit relieved letting the words out of her chest.
But then, Max said,
"What about me?" He asked and she turned her face to meet his.
"What?"
"What if I can give you the warmth you desire? Valerie, I find myself drawn to you, and though I don’t know what you’re looking for, what you want to get, or what you expect, I think I can try to share with you a bit of my warmth that you’re so upset about."
"How... Is that possible?" Valerie asked and suddenly frowned in contempt. "Are you messing with me right now? You want to make fun of me because of the words I said?" She asked but he shook his head.
Valerie was backed into the wall. She clutched onto the book in her hand and pursed her lips.
"I’m not messing with you." Max said and smiled. "I just have a lot of warmth to spare."
"Maximus." She called over gritted teeth and he placed his hand on the wall, pinning her to that location. "Don’t cross the line with me. You don’t know me."
"But I want to know you." He said, leaning his head closer and whispering softly. "There are so many mysteries around you but I’m glad to have discovered one for them. Warmth, I can give you that."
Valerie felt his breath itching on her skin. It was like a deadly whisper and she couldn’t even bring herself to push him away even when he was invading her space.
She clutched her book tighter as Max used his other hand to caress her face.
"Valerie, I can pass on my warmth to you."
Valerie didn’t know what was going on. She thought to herself that she would push him away if he did any funny thing but his gentle whisper and ticklish breath were like nothing she had ever experienced and she wanted to know what he would do next.
If it would give her the same tingling sensation she was having at the moment.
"Valerie," he called softly, "do you want my warmth?" He asked and she slowly shut her eyes.
He planted his lips on hers, carefully avoiding her glasses to avoid alerting her and ruining the moment.
Once he pulled away, she opened her eyes and stared into his.
"You..." She suddenly clicked her tongue and pushed him away, running to the other side where she hid from him and sat on the floor.
Max touched his chest. Ah, he didn’t expect to be shoved away. Was he that bad even if it was a light kiss? Well, maybe, it was his first time after all.
"After all that confidence, I might’ve actually screwed my chance of getting to know her more." He muttered to himself, scratching the back of his head.
Contrary to what he thought, Valerie was actually hiding, trying to calm her ravaging heart and flushed face. Why was she like that? Why was she feeling so strange inside?
She touched her chest. Her heart wouldn’t stop thumping loudly.
She bowed her head on her book. What was this? Was this the warmth he was talking about? It felt so... Strange. It felt... Warm.
