Chapter 30: The head of the house speaks up

"She got it from me."

Everyone turned to see who was intervening to help Valerie, only to see the head of the house with a lion mask on.

Slowly, he took steps towards the scene with his cane in his hand and his other hand positioned behind his back. And then there was his assistant who was following him closely from behind.

"Why are so many people ganging up on a young one like this? She has mouth but you won’t let her speak. She has evidence but you won’t let her use that either. What exactly do you want her to do in a situation where you corner her like this?" He asked and stopped in front of them. "Should she stay quiet and accept all your accusations?"

Valerie stared at the familiar old man and though she could not see his face, she could still remember his voice. Earlier that day, they had both conversed, laughed, and shared a meal.

What was he doing here?

Oh right, this was a party so he was probably invited. But why were they all silent all of a sudden? Was his rank higher than she anticipated?

"Um, there seems to be some misunderstanding." Lucy said and bowed her head in respect. "Greetings, I am..."

"I know who you are." The old man interrupted her and that gave Valerie cause to suspect this man’s identity.

Even if Lucy tried to be an innocent and soft girl in public, she didn’t always lower her head, even to the elderly.

"I also know what is going on as I have been watching from the moment this lady stepped into this hall." He said, and the bold lady who now had a towel over her shoulders stepped forward.

"Please, help me seek justice. I have suffered bitter humiliation for no reason." She pleaded loudly and the old man slightly raised his head to meet her gaze.

"Like I said, girl, I have been watching the entire time and my eyes do not lie." He said, finally bringing his hand from his back and pointing at his eye.

"But..."

"Justice?" He interrupted her. "I believe it has already been met. Though a bit extreme, I will not complain. You chose your card and how to play it, and she played the same way. As they say, an eye for an eye."

This caused everyone to murmur lightly and then fall silent. The hall was so silent to the extent that if a pin fell, one would hear it echo.

"Now that I have clarified how this lady was able to enter this party, are there still any complaints?" He asked and Lucy, who was at a loss, clenched her fists.

There had to be something she could nitpick. Then, she remembered.

"But her dress." She said. "It’s so loud. No one should wear such a dress at a child’s celebration."

"And red wine should not be drunk in such a celebration either." He said, "But it was allowed, so why can this dress not be allowed? Besides, there was no specific dress code, so she is not in the wrong."

He calmly stated, causing Lucy to grit her teeth.

"Furthermore, a moment ago, you were acting like you cared for your sister so deeply, yet now, it seems you are trying hard to find fault with her in order to condemn her."

"No, that’s..."

The old man struck his cane on the ground, causing her to flinch and go silent.

"If you truly cared for your sister, you would’ve joined her in picking a dress and then come to this party hand in hand. As I recall, the invitation sent to Ross mansion had a plus one written on it. Everyone knows there are two ladies bearing Ross as their last name and to be fair, you both had a chance to attend, yet you secretly came to the party alone, leaving her to find a means on her own. And now you condemn her. If this is how you show care then the world would’ve had a never-ending war. It’s unforgivable." 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶

Valerie was surprised. This old man’s words were slow and calm but they sounded harsh and scary to the recipient. He had so much authority and given how everyone respected him, she finally knew who he was.

But other than that... The fact that there was a plus one in the invitation... Haha, Lucy really had it coming this time.

Lucy clutched her dress. Things weren’t supposed to end like this. What would people think of her now?

"Come child." The old man extended his hand to her. "The world may make you out to be a bad person, they may slander you and cause you to turn into the type of sheep you are now, but in my eyes, you are but a victim to all the cruelty and scrutiny, so come."

Valerie was hesitant. She didn’t know what would happen after she took that hand but in the presence of everyone, she wanted them to know that this old man was her backer.

She took his hand and slowly, he led her away from there, taking a step at a time.

As they left, the murmuring rose up again. They found it very odd that the head of the family would extend his hand to such a vicious person.

Just now, he spoke as if he knew the situation of the two girls entirely and instead of stretching his hand to the saint that they all knew, he stretched his hand to the devil they knew.

Well, maybe they were the ones who didn’t know anything. The head of the house had a great sense of judgement so there was no way he would make a wrong choice.

"I knew it felt strange. Her saint-like behavior is all an act, I tell you."

"You heard it right? They were both supposed to come together but she came on her own with the invitation."

"That’s quite sad to hear. I used to think she was a good girl."

"I know we all condemned her dress but if she really cared, she wouldn’t say such things alongside us and even tell us off as the head of the house has said."

They kept talking and Lucy got furious but she could not afford to lose her temper there so she stormed out of the hall in tears, trying to ganner sympathy as the victim but no one looked at her and rather, they started admiring something else since she was gone.

"Ah, but did you see how graceful she looked? I have to admit, her personality aside, she’s a beauty even in a mask."

The men were talking, the ladies were gossiping and the vibe of the party had lightened up.

Maximus, from the top floor, could not comprehend what he had just watched. He gripped the bars hard. He hated it more when he was oblivious, and being unaware of what was going on in front of him... He felt angry.

"Since when did you have connections with my old man, Valerie?"
