Chapter 29: Her ultimate act - Trying to act the good sister

Everyone stared in awe as Valerie poured the glass which she had filled to the brim, on this lady’s head, allowing it to flow down to her white dress, dying it red.

"Gosh, two slips in a row. Maybe I should go see a doctor. You know, since I’m such a clutz." Her eyes brimmed in contempt as she glared down at the lady.

"You...You..." Struck with disbelief, she was stunned. How could such a thing happen to her?

This lady... How could she humiliate someone like this? And in front of all these people too.

"Y-you.."

"Hm? Speak up." Valerie said. "I can’t hear you over your mumbling."

Her words infuriated the lady more and she exploded.

"You bitch! How dare you do this to me?"

"Now, now. I may be a bitch but I’m still older than you so learn to use honorifics when cussing at your elder, okay?" She smiled but her smile was brimming with satisfaction.

"Argh, I’m going to kill you. I..." She bit her lip, fighting her tears. "You’re so cruel."

Valerie glared down at her. Cruel? Who was it that held her shoulder high when she ought to have apologized for spilling wine on her dress? If you talk about cruelty... She glanced at Lucy who was grinding her teeth in excitement... She should be referring to the lady who sent her to do such a thing despite knowing how it would end.

"There she goes again." Murmuring rose in the hall.

"Can she not attend a party without creating a scene?"

"I don’t think there’s ever been a time when she was quiet from the beginning to the end of a party. She should change her ways or just stop attending parties altogether."

"I don’t think she got an invite though. Her sister is here so she must’ve bribed her way in."

"Shush, are you saying Stewart’s employees are so low on funds that they would collect measly money from such a vicious woman? Watch your mouth if you don’t want to be thrown out."

People were weary. They were careful with their words. One, because they did not want to be a victim of Valerie’s cruelty as they could never rival her.

Two, they did not want to get on her bad side in case she eventually rose up to position so they could only talk from the shadows. Three, this was an occasion they could not date mess around in.

As if getting on Valerie’s bad side wasn’t enough, they may end up causing a ruckus and get blacklisted from attending any Stewart party in the future. Valerie would be fine since her family ranked number two, but they would definitely be goners.

"There she is." Someone yelled, pointing at Valerie and directing the guards to where she was.

’Gosh, there’s more?’ Valerie thought.

"That lady sneaked in here." This was the second lady who had told Lucy she would get the guards to kick Valerie out. "She’s even causing a commotion. You should get her out of here."

The guards stood in front of Valerie and everyone quieted down to see what would happen next. What move Valerie would take. Would she go with the guard calmly or put up a fight like she always did?

Many put their bet on the latter.

"My! It appears I have more audience. Did you, too, come to congratulate me on my near-death experience?" She asked with a wide smile and the guards exchanged looks.

This sparked another round of discussions among the guests. Many heard of the tale. Some were even present at the time she barged into her own funeral and was slapped by her uncle.

It brought a debate about whether Valerie had faked her own death or if she was simply declared dead after putting up a facade that she was dead, then coincidentally, she returns the same day of her funeral.

Many believed the first because she was the type who loved to draw attention, no matter the means. But they could also not rule out the fact that her uncle was behind the explosion, as he would benefit a lot from killing her.

Yet with that, down would bring up the topic of his dead son and that he might’ve done that in an act of revenge for the child he had lost.

In any case, there was no sympathy for her as she was a menace who needed to be wiped out from existence.

"Ma’am, we’d like you to come with us. You can’t be in here without an invite.*

"Oh my, do I look so old?" Valerie asked, touching her cheek. "I can’t believe you referred to me as ma’am. That’s so sad."

"Uh..." The guards were confused for a moment but quickly picked themselves up and said, "Just come with us. We’ll escort you outside."

"And what if I say no?" Valerie dared to ask, which was strange because at a time like this. One would make excuses or try to even run, yet she was asking them questions in an act to confuse them.

’Max should be here any moment now, right?’ Valerie wondered, darting her eyes aside. Then, she caught a glimpse of a man wearing the same red mask as hers, standing on the top floor with a glass of red wine pressed against his lips. ’Ah, so that’s where he is.’

Suddenly, Lucy flung herself forward and grabbed Valerie’s hand.

"Sister, I know how badly you wanted to come but this is wrong." She said with a pleading voice and Valerie looked at her.

Ah, yes. This was it. Her ultimate act. Trying to act as a good sister and plead on her behalf. And at the end of it, her goodness would be taken for granted as this vicious sister of hers would push her away and earn her sympathy points.

But not this time.

"Sister, just go with them. It’s not right for you to bribe your way in." Lucy added.

"Of course it’s not right." Valerie said with a smile on her cheeks, causing Lucy to grit and wonder what she had in mind. "No one should ever indulge in bribery."

"Then... How did you get in?" Lucy asked and suddenly gasped, putting her hand over her mouth. "Do you perhaps have a secret relationship with one of the guards?"

This incited murmuring, just as Valerie nodded.

"Did you get him to get an invite for you? Even if that’s the case, it’s still wrong. It’s stealing." Lucy hit hard and Valerie sighed.

Guess there was no use bringing out her invitation now. To get out of this and not make Lucy’s words true in their minds, Max would need to get down and help her.

But then, things would take a bad turn.

She glanced at him who was still watching from the top floor and shook her head, signaling him not to come down.

"Sister, it’s wrong, even if it’s you." Lucy said.

"My caring sister, I know how much you care for me." Valerie said, "But don’t worry." She patted her hand and then pushed it away lightly, to avoid any misunderstanding from the eyes watching. "I didn’t get my invite from a guard."

"Then, who did you get it from?"

It seemed like Lucy would not give up and would keep pestering till everyone was convinced that Valerie got it from a guard. So Valerie decided to call her invitation card the authentic one while the one in Lucy’s hand was gotten by some unclear means.

"That..."

However, it did not go as planned as an unplanned variable stepped in.

"She got it from me." Someone said and they all turned their heads to see who it was.
