Chapter 77: sympathy from the don - II

Periods were a good thing to happen in some cases. Mostly, not but today they had proved to be exceptionally favourable. Also, it was the second time she had used this trick on one of the family members.

As soon as she closed the door to her room, Evelyn sighed in relief. The danger was over. Now, for all she cared, Salvatore could directly ask his brother about it.

At least it was off of her head for now and there was no way Evelyn was going to face the man again. So if her cramps lasted for one day or two at most they were going to last for an entire week.

Evelyn closed her eyes getting ready for sleep. Since she was going to receive her food in her bed she might as well eat in it. So there was no reason for her to continue waking up.

Someone knocked on the door making her hiss slightly. Why now?

"Come in," she said, rubbing her forehead in exaggeration of being tired.

"Evelyn?" Salvatore entered with a creased in between his forehead. He had a small carry bag in his hand and entered the room after closing the door behind him.

Salvatore went all the way over to the bed but did not sit down instead extended the bag to the direction. "It’s for you."

"Me?" She repeated, perplexed by that.

He nodded. "Marcello called and I discussed your cramps with him. He had told me about you having them before so I asked him what you like. This hot water bottle is inside along with chocolates."

Wow, Evelyn stared at the bag. Impressed was not even the word for what she felt regarding the situation at the moment. She felt like she had been stunned.

Stunned at a faster rate was the don who was offering her chocolates and hot water bottle. These two things look to be so below him. It was like a king carrying out the tasks of a servant.

Snapping out of her thinking process extended her hand as she sat up, "T-thank you," she stuttered.

It was slightly too much for her.

"Your welcome," Salvatore nodded again, "you have my phone number. The Butler and the maid will be checking up on you so if you need anything just call them. There is a new button attached to your bedside table, ring that up."

Evelyn nodded. This time she was setting up and leaning her back against the bed. Even if she had gained slight height she still appeared to be dwarfed by the name in front of him.

Salvatore nodded again before leaving. He did not turn around even slightly to say goodbye but just closed the door on his way out.

The don was a man of less words.

Not paying any attention to her, she just turned herself to eating the chocolates.

Just as he was able to put the first piece of chocolate in her mouth her phone rang.

This time Evelyn did not hiss, this time Evelyn cried. Why were people so hell bent on disturbing her? Could not get some peace and quiet to eat a piece of chocolate?!

Evelyn rolled her over in defeat and picked up her phone which was on the other side of the bed. It was her friend Giovanni calling.

She picked it up, "Hey—’

He cut her off, "Did you hear about Aldo?"

"Aldo?" She repeated in question. "No? Why, what happened to him?"

It was not uncommon for a member of any organisation to get shot. It was no longer breaking news but something they just brushed off until it was serious and life-threatening.

"He had an accident, you know," Evelyn sat up in horror, "the family did not let the information out for some while. Now they have let others know that he is stable."

"Stable? It means that he is okay now?" Evelyn considered him to be a friend and not only that but he was also the reason for her to be out and not being inside someone’s basement as a sold piece of meat.

"No, well ye—I don’t know what to say at this point." Gio’s harsh sigh at the end confirmed it. "He is stable. His heartbeat is no longer flattering nor is he on the cliff of death but the thing is, he is still in a coma."

"Medically induced?" Evelyn asked a little hopefully. She really hoped that Aldo was in a medically induced coma. It was better if the doctors did it.

Giovanni remained silent for a few seconds before speaking, "No."

Evelyn closed her eyes and sighed. It hurt to see one of her own people suffer.

Evelyn wondered what to say next. "Is he at his family owned clinic?" Families like hers owner clinics for themselves and their soldiers. It was better that way.

"Yes." Gio sighed again. "I think they might end up shifting him into the house. I think they might have a room prepared already for that. It’s like an attack waiting to happen."

Evelyn hummed, agreeing with him.

If Aldo remained at the clinic by himself, even if they were soldiers all around him he was still alone. He was like a target in an open space with a clear shot.

That was bad.

"What happened?" Evelyn brought them back to the main question. "What happened for him to be hospitalized and be in a coma?"

"Apparently, it was a car accident." Gio told her. "I don’t know the details for sure because my father only overheard the conversation. We will be making a visit to them personally."

Car accident, Evelyn whispered to herself. "Hit and run?"

"I don’t know." He told her. "I will be visiting them tomorrow morning with my Father and if you want I can convey your regards."

"Please do. ." Evelyn then frowned, "No, No, don’t."

"What?"

"I’ll do that. I will visit him too." Evelyn declared. She now knew why Aldo was there at her father’s funeral. There was no way that he could have been there but his family members were and his mother had been supportive.

It was the time they ever wanted to show her support to his mother as well. His mother was calm and . . Just good. Something that was not seen in this line of work.

"With us? If you want?" Gio offered.

"No," she declined politely, "I would like to go alone. As much as I hate going alone, it would be better for me to do so."

It was not that Evelyn never visited the family but she had never visited it on her own. Her father always accompanied her. Now his absence seems to be a constant pinch in her heart.

"Alright then." Gio said. "Bye then."

"Bye." Evelyn muttered before hanging up.

After hanging up, Evelyn glanced at the door and stared at it longingly. The next task was going to talk to Salvatore.

Visits to other Mafia households and families while being alone without any kind of protection was unsafe. It did not matter if the family was in alliance, or not. It was unsafe.

Usually at the gate of the entrance of the house every weapon carried by the visitor was taken away and the visitor was supposed to enter the house bare of any weaponry.

It was like stripping a soldier bare. It felt like that to them.

Salvatore cocked a brow towards her. "Aldo Mancini is in a hospital bed and you were told yesterday?" He chuckled. "For someone who calls him a friend you are seriously unaware of what is happening in his life."

Evelyn gulped. At the beginning of the conversation when she had asked for his permission it was said that she was going to visit a friend named Aldo Mancini.

His mocking was clear from what he said.

"How long have you known about it?" A little defensiveness was dripping from the tone she said that in.

Salvatore smirked. "From the past two and a half months. The exact time before your father died."

Hearing those words had shame settled on her. How could she not know?

It had been that long? Evelyn had enough time on hands before her father’s death to know the whereabouts of her friend yet she did not.

"Wow," she muttered under her breath before taking a seat on the couch adjacent to the one that the Don was sitting on.

She really could not believe herself.

"Don’t push yourself for it," Salvatore sighed and waved it off, "to be honest it is not something that you should concern yourself with. My job comes with knowing everything that is happening around it, yours does not."

Naah, the words did not affect her at all. She still felt bad.

"You could have told me." Evelyn spat at him in anger. "If you knew about my friend being hospitalized you should have told me!"

The Don’s eyes visibly darkened at that.
