Chapter 112: The dinner party - VI

She fell silent.

It was not just that she felt silent physically. Her mind was silent as well. Even if a thousand questions were running in her mind Evelyn numbly sat in her place.

Somehow it made sense to marry Salvatore and there was only, unlike before, a small part of her that it was against the idea.

Before the whole conversation Evelyn was adamantly against the idea of marrying someone just for protection or because of the fact that she had not fallen in love with him. Now you think about it, why couldn’t she marry Salvatore?

"Why don’t you take some time and think about it, Evelyn?" Angelo leaned back on his chair and Evelyn suddenly did not feel his shrewd eyes upon her.

It was like there had been a change. It was like the entire atmosphere of the room had changed. From daunting, it had gone to something more coming and just normal.

What just happened?

"Say it Evelyn," he probed her a little. "You will think about it, won’t you?"

Holding his spare Evelyn ended up nodding. She didn’t even know what they were going to think about. It was like her mind was completely somewhere else.

She continued to set a string into space. He was staring at the desk without paying any kind of attention to what was going around her or even in her mind. There was something jumbled up but Evelyn could not just straighten it out.

"Evelyn," he cleared his throat and brought her back to reality, making her look up at him. "Would you like to have a glass of water?" He offered with a small smile before looking at the table on the side where there was water along with a few bottles of alcohol.

She nodded as her eyes moved back from the trolley to him who stood up from his chair and walked to the trolley where her eyes had previously been. Angelo effortlessly put a glass from the compartment below and poured water inside it before bringing it to her and giving it on the table.

Evelyn stayed at the crystal clear liquid inside the glass before picking it up and bringing it to her lips. She took along said before gulping it down and took one more before keeping the glass back where Angelo had placed it on his desk.

She gave a huge sigh after that. It helped calming her down.

"Don’t think that much of it stresses you. I don’t want that." When he spoke again Evelyn looked at him again but this time Angelo was not sitting in his chair rather he was standing behind it.

"Do not put pressure on your brain of any kind. This is something that you can take your time to think about."

But she had enough time was the question. How long would it take before she had to answer the question? However she is supposed to be sure that whatever answer she would choose for this problem would be the right answer after all?"

She bit her lip in nervousness. How was the answer to any of the questions? How was she to stay calm and not take any kind of stress regarding any of this.

Her teeth grazed harder. What if you choose the wrong future for herself? What if Evelyn decided to take something the did not belong to her and landed herself in a worse situation than before?

Whatever, she misjudged for herself? Even if she had to decide by Salvatore what was the guarantee that she got about him and his behaviour for the future?

The sharple inside her body twisted even worse than before.

If her father had been there, Evelyn would not have encountered any kind of problems. Now she had no way to return. Even if she did get married in the future with her father’s presence she would be able to return to a place that she would call home but since he was not there, she could return nowhere.

"May I be excused?" Evelyn very softly asked the man for his permission. She could not stay in this room any longer. She has started to feel like the walls had been closed down on her, cornering her, trapping her inside. .

"Yes." As soon as the word was said Evelyn felt it all wash off her. She stood up and without a look back she walked out of the door, closing it behind her. She did not stop there. She was very much aware of the guards that stood outside the office of the previous Don.

Evelyn made it to the end of the hallway, as the turnaround came just before the stairs, in that small space Evelyn found herself sliding down the wall and sitting on the floor with her knees held to her chest.

She had imagined anything to be. Not only was her future uncertain, she was uncertain about where she would go because at the end of the day she would be required to stay in someone’s protection.

Even if Evelyn did not have her father’s organisation, people would still want to get her in hopes of prying it off Angelo and that was something no one would ever let her go because of.

"Evelyn?" She looked up to find Alexis in front of her. She was looking down at Evelyn like a small child who she pitted.

"Are you alright?" She whispered before kneeling in front of Evelyn and sitting down. "I’m right here if you want to."

"Are you?" The words left her mouth before she realised making her slap her hand over her mouth.

Alexis chuckled and unlike whatt her husband would gave, it seemed to be light and full of joy. " Of course, I’m there. If I was not, I would never say so." She leaned over and took Evelyn’s hand off her mouth and held it into her warm hands. "Now, would you like a hug?"

Evelyn stared at the woman trying to gauge intentions but when she found none, Evelyn could not help but give into what was offered. It was the only offer where Evelyn knew nothing would be taken from her in return.
