Chaos' Heir-Chapter 1039: Life
Chapter 1039: Life
The traces of Colonel Norrett's failed evolution still scarred his body, but the time spent on Baoway had transformed them into more than drawbacks.
Colonel Norrett's first attempt at the evolution had failed, but part of his body had permanently mutated nonetheless. The following surgery had removed as much transformed tissue as possible, but some had remained, forever changing his body.
The remaining mutated tissue allowed the Colonel to exert power superior to ordinary fifth- level warriors but also impeded further attempts at evolving. It also conflicted with some of his physical functions since his body's stability was at stake.
Nevertheless, the supplement and the scientists' experiments had turned that partial hindrance into an asset, even expanding on it. Colonel Norrett had been half a step into the superior realm years ago but was above three-quarters into it now.
Moreover, the Colonel didn't have to worry about any physical instability now. He didn't get many chances to test his improvements in actual battles, but the situation didn't offer alternatives.
The yellow marks on Colonel Norrett's exposed skin grew brighter before spreading toward his normal-looking flesh. He gained a yellow-green sickish complexion before thrusting his open palm forward. A shockwave resounded, but nothing visible came from his hand.
However, the effects did manifest. The grass between Miss Christen and Colonel Norrett suddenly wilted, turning pale-brownish, and the ground underneath also lost part of its luster. Even the trunk behind Miss Christen started to rot, but the noble warrior remained unaffected.
Miss Christen inspected the decaying environment, clear displeasure in her white eyes. A trace of disgust also affected her expression, making her slowly exhale to counteract those effects. The vitality in the area suddenly intensified. New life flowed into the grass, trees, and ground. The decaying process turned backward, reversing before restoring the environment to an even better state.
Colonel Norrett couldn't help but stop. He had countless more attacks in store, but the complete ineffectiveness of his previous spell gave birth to a grim feeling. He could affect the environment, but Miss Christen had remained untouched without even summoning defensive
measures.
"The Global Army's archives state your element has to do with chemicals," Miss Christen announced, her displeasure waning once the area restored itself. "It's flexible but weak. My compliments for making it affect this area with me standing on it."
Colonel Norrett obviously didn't plan to win. Aided metamorphosis or not, Miss Christen still was a fully-fledged evolved warrior, while the Colonel had yet to master the changes happening inside his body. Defeating her would be ideal, but Colonel Norrett didn't fool himself.
Yet, Miss Christen seemed willing to waste time, and Colonel Norrett would gladly indulge her. After all, the quadrant was littered with scanners, and his little shit of a leader was famous for his uncanny perception.
"I attempted the evolution years ago," Colonel Norrett explained, buying as much time as possible. "I failed, and my element changed a bit. It's more poison-oriented now."
"That explains it," Miss Christen replied. "More specific elements tend to be able to exert more power."
Colonel Norrett wore a polite smile while his brain worked overtime to develop a suitable battle strategy. He had spoken the truth and wielded a vast arsenal of abilities, but his opponent was an evolved warrior. Only the best of the best had some hope of working.
"Though," Miss Christen continued, looking at the Colonel. "Allow me to apologize, Colonel Norrett. My element isn't as battle-oriented as my fellow evolved warriors. I'm not sure I qualify as a sparring partner to evaluate your battle prowess."
"I'm a humble man, Miss Christen," Colonel Norrett reassured. "I'll accept anything life has to offer."
"Also," Miss Christen continued, ignoring the Colonel's lie. "There's a reason the Nognes family sent me instead of other evolved warriors. I'm afraid help won't come."
Colonel Norrett's polite smile didn't waver, but a curse resounded inside his brain. Truthfully, he had suspected as much. Miss Christen's ability to hide herself inside those woods had to be a countermeasure against Khan's inhuman perception, and its uses couldn't end there.
"I can still hope to make as much noise as possible," Colonel Norrett guessed. "Don't you agree, Miss Christen?"

"I won't enjoy that, Colonel Norrett," Miss Christen responded. "However, if you must."
Colonel Norrett acted as soon as Miss Christen finished her line. He shot forward, joining his open hands before waving them upward. A yellow-green blade had grown from his fingers during the sudden attack, but hitting Miss Christen's waist interrupted it.
Colonel Norrett couldn't believe his eyes. His yellow-green blade was supposed to leave a diagonal cut on Miss Christen's torso, if not cleaving it entirely. However, his spell had only managed to pierce her paler military uniform, stopping at her skin, unable to penetrate it. That was one of the Colonel's best spells when it came to pure piercing power. The melee's requirement and condensed decaying properties made it deadly, but Miss Christen didn't even need to dodge it. Her bare skin wielded enough power to stop that ability.
"Battles at the evolved level involve more than raw power, Colonel," Miss Christen explained. "Elements have inclinations and depths. They are almost alive, and wielding them like mere weapons will only employ a fraction of their power."
Colonel Norrett promptly dismissed his poisonous blade and retreated. Yet, he only managed to step back by a few meters before his whole body froze. The Colonel felt he had slammed into an invisible wall, and its surfaces were closing on him from every side, hindering his movements.
To make things worse, the hindrance was far from unpleasant. Colonel Norrett felt almost cozy inside that ethereal cage. His mind drifted away, and only a small, still-aware chunk of his brain recorded the events playing in his eyes.
Miss Christen had materialized before Colonel Norrett, slowly reaching toward his chest. Her gesture seemed to last forever, but the Colonel clearly felt her hand on his uniform in the next second.
"Take my life for example, Colonel," Miss Christen explained. "Theoretically, I should have no business with attacks. Yet, I'm life itself, and the same energy beats inside you."
