Chapter 69: Delusional

After Henry dropped Amy at the hospital, she first went to Jayson’s doctor to get the updates on his recovery and get to know the plan they have for his physical therapy. Jayson’s lead surgeon is also the director of the hospital so she expects nothing less from the office that she is about to go to.

The hallway itself leading to the director’s office is luxurious and elegant, like a hotel. Very different from the other levels in the hospital where everything is white. This hallway, in particular, has beige floors, light brown faux wood walls with black accents, and chrome trimmings.

She was immediately greeted by Dr. Johnson’s secretary with a warm smile, "They are waiting for you Ms. Bell," the secretary then lead her to the office’s double doors.

Amy was welcome by three doctors, Jayson’s lead surgeon, his pediatrician, and another doctor whom she have not met before. "Have a seat, Ms. Bell," Dr. Johnson instructed.

As soon as everyone took their seats at the round table, Dr. Johnson started their meeting right away. "Jayson is doing very well and from here, I will be transferring him to Dr. Kiev, he is our best pediatric orthopedic doctor in the country. He will closely work with Dr. Wright as she is Jayson’s pediatrician here.

I will still be seeing Jayson perhaps once a week or every other week. Jayson’s grandparents already met them yesterday and I ask you to meet us today because they have some good news for you.

Dr. Johnson then signaled the two doctors to speak their piece.

"Our projection is that Jayson can go home after two to three months from today. While he is here, he will have minimal physical therapy since his operation wounds are still healing," Dr. Wright explained.

"After that, he will continue his physical therapy both here and at home. Mr. Welsh already approved of the in-house therapist and nurse for him. He only needs to go here once a week so I can check his progress in the first few months and if the result is good then I will reduce our check-ups to every other week and then once a month until he fully recovers. I am assuming he will be able to walk in eight or ten months after going home," it was Dr. Kiev who laid out the recovery plan this time.

"I am very grateful to all of you doctors and I hope that you will be patient with Jayson, I know the recovery is worse than the operation itself. Even though Jayson is a happy kid, the therapy might push him to the edge," Amy’s eyes welled up as she thanked the doctors in front of her.

"Don’t worry Ms. Bell we are used to it, and Jayson is far better than the other patients we’ve handled so far," Dr. Kiev assured Amy.

After their meeting, Amy first went to the bakery on the hospital’s ground floor, there was a long line at the cashier for it was the peak of the early morning rush when everyone is trying to buy their pastry and coffee on the go before they go to their respective tasks. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

It was almost Amy’s turn to order when she caught sight of the blonde woman whom she would not want to see ever. But unlucky her, Vanessa already caught her presence as well. To her surprise, she smiled at her and didn’t shift her gaze away from where she is standing.

Amy smiled back and thankfully it was already her turn to order, giving her an excuse to not maintain eye contact. She wished that the bakery staff would move faster so she can go to her nephew right away and far away from Vanessa’s judging eyes.

But it was not her lucky day, Vanessa went straight to her before the staff can finish packing her orders for her family.

"Amy, do you have a minute? I just want to talk to you to tell you something and apologize for last night," her tone was so nice and almost begging, opposite of what she had last night, thought Amy.

With Vanessa’s pleading tone and puppy eyes looking at her, she can’t help but nod and they went back to Vanessa’s table. She even helped Amy carry the paper bag filled with pastries.

Vanessa did not spare a moment as soon as they were comfortably seated in the bakery’s lounge chair, "Forgive me if I was rude last night, it was not my intention. I hope you can look past it."

Amy nodded and said, "It’s okay Mrs. Cromwell, I hold no grudge."

Amy noticed Vanessa flinched at how she addressed her with her married name. Vanessa hid her annoyance by sipping the coffee in the cup that she was holding.

"If that is all, you have to excuse me, I need to go to my family, they are waiting for the pastries I bought," Amy uttered when she saw Vanessa taking her time to drink her coffee and wasting her time.

"Forgive me, I don’t mean to be impolite but it’s just that I don’t know how to say it. You might take it differently," Vanessa sighed as she places her cup back on the coffee table.

"Try me Mrs. Cromwell I’m all ears but I need to go soon, for the kids are waiting for their breakfast," Amy wanted to roll her eyes at Vanessa. She’s not that naive to not know that this woman has a hidden agenda for approaching her.

She not buying her apologetic facade and she has no plan of putting her defenses down for this woman whom she knows wanted Henry for herself. Amy knows that Vanessa is the type of woman who is ready to destroy others just to get what she wants.

"I am here because I have an appointment with my oncologist; I have cancer of the uterus Amy. It’s not that grave yet but they have to remove my uterus. You know what it means right?" She was looking straight at Amy’s face trying to catch any negative reactions that she will have.

But Amy just stares back at her blankly, she is not letting Vanessa figure out what she is thinking.

"Yes, it means you can no longer be pregnant after that and I’m sorry Mrs. Cromwell but why are you telling me this?" Amy asked.

"You are correct, I can no longer be pregnant but I can still have children of my own. I can choose to freeze my fertilized eggs and can plant them in a surrogate someday," Vanessa moved her eyes from Amy to her fidgeting fingers on her lap and continued with her story.

"Henry and I, have been friends since we were young. Our families go way back even before we were born. Our fathers were best friends, and I am betrothed to him. He will be the donor for my eggs and I will find a surrogate as soon as possible. I will not freeze them so Henry and I can have our babies soon."

Amy’s forehead creased at what she heard. She heard Henry last night saying to Vanessa that he has no plans of marrying her and here is Vanessa imagining things in front of her. Amy did not speak even after Vanessa paused for a few seconds.

She has no words for this woman. She knows that whatever she says, her effort would just be wasted. She just stared at Vanessa waiting for her to finish talking so she can leave.

"I wanted to ask you to end your contract with Henry right away. I know that he is paying for your nephew’s hospitalization, but don’t worry, if you end your contract, I will be the one who will pay the penalty and I will pay for your nephew’s needs. Also, I will double the cost that Henry is paying you. How much did your contract cost? I will write you a check right now," Vanessa then quickly took out her checkbook and pen.

"There’s no amount indicated in our contract Mrs. Cromwell," Amy answered.

Vanessa who was writing something on her checkbook looked up and raised her right brow at Amy and asked, "What do you mean no amount?"

"It literally means that. Henry did not put any. I also cannot discuss it any further, if you knew so much about it, then you must also know about the non-disclosure agreement that I signed."

"That’s ok then. How about we ask the doctors how much will it cost so I can give you the check already, let’s go," Vanessa stood up as she gestured for Amy to walk with her to the doctor’s office.

Amy stood up as well but did not move an inch, "You do not understand it, Mrs. Cromwell. I have no plan to leave Henry, nor I will allow him to donate his sperm to you. You can ask other men for that or get some from the sperm bank. I am sure they have a lot of handsome donors there for you to choose from."

Vanessa’s nose flared up in anger and raised her hand to slap Amy. Unfortunately, for her, Amy caught her hand before it landed on her face and held her wrist firmly so she had trouble taking back her hand from Amy’s grip.

"How dare you! I told you we are engaged, our fathers has a signed contract for it. You have no right to say no," Vanessa staggered back when Amy finally released her wrist.

"Whatever... say what you want, and believe what you want. Be delusional as long as you want, I will not stop you. I hope this is our last meeting. The next time you raise your hand to me, I will not be so kind to you. I hope you get better Mrs. Cromwell," Amy then left Vanessa who was still rubbing her wrist that was in pain because of how tightly Amy held it.
