Chapter 517: Never Lose Himself

He wanted a... what?

He Juan stared at Mu Yuze in astonishment, seriously suspecting that something must be wrong with his hearing. He had been prepared for whatever Mu Yuze was about to ask; be it a sports car, a luxurious villa or hell, He Juan would even transfer half of his assets over if Mu Yuze were to show the slightest inkling of interest in it.

But in the end, all he wished for was a hug?

He Juan must have subconsciously voiced his thoughts out loud because Mu Yuze shot him a scathing glare. However, it lasted for barely a second before he dropped his gaze to the floor, almost boring a hole through it. His face flushed in a vibrant shade of crimson as he murmured under his breath, "Can they even compare?"

Although his voice was not louder than a mosquito buzz, He Juan heard it nonetheless. Each word struck him right on the heart like a hammer, causing it to jump and flutter in an erratic rhythm.

Could all those riches even compare to a single hug from He Juan?

As soon as the full weight of Mu Yuze’s words sank in his mind, He Juan let out an audible gasp as though the air had been knocked out of his lungs. Here Mu Yuze was, doing his magic again. He Juan had no idea how he did it. Just when he believed his feelings couldn’t run any deeper, just when he thought that he couldn’t possibly adore Mu Yuze more than he already did, the boy always found a way to prove him wrong. And it was... as frightening as it was exhilarating. For he couldn’t even begin to fathom the full extent of his emotions when it came to Mu Yuze.

Mu Yuze. Mu Yuze. Just the mere thought of that name was enough to rouse all the warmth, tenderness and fondness in his heart, which he thought had gone numb and exhausted.

With each passing second without He Juan’s response, Mu Yuze grew visibly anxious as he shuffled on his feet, unable to bring himself to meet He Juan’s eyes. "Is that... not possible?" His voice was barely above a whisper, sounding as though he would burst into tears if He Juan were to refuse.

Alas, how could he, when this had been the very thing he was secretly yearning for? Had Mu Yuze somehow gained the ability to read his mind and thus knew that He Juan had been dying to hold him?

A warm smile tugged on his lips as he exhaled, opening his arms. "Come here."

He Juan had always pegged himself as a patient man. Yet now, he felt like he was going to explode if he could not embrace Mu Yuze in his arms. He was milliseconds away from closing the loathsome distance between them and pulled Mu Yuze toward him by force, but fortunately, he did not have to resort to such a desperate move because Mu Yuze was already moving even before the last word left He Juan’s lips.

As though conveying his grievance and impatience, Mu Yuze pounced on He Juan like the fierce bunny he was and wrapped his arms tightly behind He Juan’s back, forcing out a muffled groan from his lips.

In an instant, both of them froze.

Damn it! He Juan spat out a curse in his heart. He had not been prepared to bear Mu Yuze’s whole weight, nor for the boy to grab him right where his gravest wounds were. However, there was no fucking way He Juan would ever let him find out about that! He quickly threw the searing pain to the back of his mind and improvised to the best of his ability, melding his pained groan with a mirthful chuckle. He wrapped his arms around Mu Yuze, not caring if the movement caused every inch of his body to scream in agony. For everything was worth it if it meant he could have Mu Yuze right where he wanted him.

"You’re getting heavier," he teased. "How could you tackle me without any warning? Hmm? What if both of us had tumbled to the floor? That would have been so embarrassing for me!"

It seemed like He Juan’s impromptu approach had worked, as Mu Yuze swiftly raised his head to shoot him a glare, seething, "I am not heavy! I am within the range of normal weight!" Alas, no sooner after he said those words, a sliver of doubt wormed into his heart. "Am I that heavy...?"

He Juan couldn’t help but burst into laughter. It was a pure, unadulterated sound of joy that reverberated from his very core. He couldn’t, for God’s sake, remember how long it had been since he had felt this happy, this cheerful and light. It was as though the tragic events over the past two months had never happened, and he was still the same old He Juan.

"Gege!" Mu Yuze squeezed him tighter to voice his indignation, and He Juan had to mask his pain with a series of coughs.

"Let’s see..." He put on a serious expression and wrapped a measuring arm around Mu Yuze’s slender waist, though his eyes were crinkling in mirth. "En, Xiao Ze is not heavy at all. He’s still too thin."

Mu Yuze gave him a skeptical look. "I have reasons to suspect that you’re trying to balloon me up."

He Juan laughed again as he led Mu Yuze to lean on him, and as though his greatest wish had been fulfilled, Mu Yuze immediately relaxed and melted against him like a block of butter on a frying pan, sighing contentedly. He looked so adorable like this that He Juan couldn’t help but hug him tighter, wishing to meld their bodies and souls into one. His fingers carefully tangled themselves into Mu Yuze’s soft and fluffy hair.

"Happy seventeenth birthday, Mu Yuze," he whispered deeply into the boy’s ear, his voice brimming with nothing but tenderness. "May all your wishes come true."

He could hear the soft hitch of Mu Yuze’s breath before the boy released a shaky exhale, the warm breath caressing his neck. "...Thank you," Mu Yuze replied after a moment’s pause, his voice slightly nasal. "Thank you for being here with me, Gege."

It should be me who said that, you little fool. He Juan thought with both fondness and a touch of sorrow. If it weren’t for Mu Yuze, if he did not have Mu Yuze in his life, he might have – no, he certainly would have gone insane long ago. It was Mu Yuze’s presence that had brought him joy, tranquility and peace. Like an anchor, he securely held onto the old and tattered boat that was He Juan, preventing him from getting lost in the sea of madness and volatility.

It was only with Mu Yuze that He Juan felt like he would never lose himself.
