Chapter 487: Two Possibilities

Mu Yuze’s lips quivered. His entire world seemed to have ground to a halt and all that he could hear was the absurd words of the man inside the television. They echoed in his mind again and again like a curse, leaving him staggered by the sheer weight of incredulity that bore down upon him. "H–How is this even possible?!"

Just yesterday... it was just yesterday that He Juan gave him a call, telling him to go ahead with dinner because he had another business to attend to. So how could he suddenly transform into a wanted criminal within the span of one night?! The whole situation felt like a surreal nightmare and Mu Yuze even wondered if he had been plunged into a dream-like illusion. But he pinched his arm, and the pain that shot up his nerves was real, making him realize that none of them was a dream.

Juan-gege, he had really...

Mu Yuze took an abrupt step forward and he almost cried out in pain when he accidentally stepped on a glass shard. His face twisted in pain as he quickly jumped out of the haphazard mess on the floor. Sucking in a breath, he checked his foot to see that a long gash had formed there, oozing blood.

"Damn it," he cursed softly. His foot was pulsing and throbbing in pain, but he merely cleaned it with alcohol and wrapped it with bandages before he limped to his room to retrieve his phone.

Sitting on the bed, he punched in He Juan’s number with trembling fingers. "Please... please pick up..." he prayed desperately.

Alas, the call was met only with the cold response of voicemail.

Meanwhile, inside Fang Yazhu’s villa in Guangnan City.

The same bold declaration echoed loud and clear in the silent living room. A heavy stillness settled, engulfing the space in an eerie hush. And even though there were more than ten people around, the quiet was so absolute that not even a single breathing could be heard. Every pair of eyes converged on the television screen, each brimming with solemnity, anger, repulsion and disgust.

"Who gave him the right to..." one of the men seethed, his voice barely above a whisper. "If not because of Boss, did he think he could still maintain his position with how lousy his job performance is?"

"That’s right, if Boss hadn’t ordered us to retreat after cleaning up the area, the entire Yuyang would already be within our control! Ha! The police would be nothing by then. And now he even dares to make our Boss a scapegoat?!"

The men bristled in anger, and they started cursing the police out.

On the other hand, Huang Zhiyan cast a hesitant glance at He Juan, who had remained motionless ever since. He couldn’t seem to gauge He Juan’s mood from his expressionless face. "B–Boss..." he called out cautiously, his gaze falling on He Juan’s pocket. "Your phone is vibrating."

But He Juan acted as if he heard nothing at all, his gaze remained fixed on the television screen. "At present, city bureaus from four provinces have come together to initiate a joint investigation. We’re in the process of assembling more personnel, but I can assure you that our nation will stand united against this malevolent force! We’re determined to eradicate this criminal network from our country and restore peace once more!"

"Boss..."

"Shut up," He Juan hissed, causing the other person to clamp their mouth shut in an instant.

He ground his jaws, his lashes lowered in thought.

Too quick. Everything had unfolded too quickly. If he still harbored some doubts inside his mind before, then he was ninety percent certain now. The pace of the police’s action was unnaturally swift. The accident had just happened last night, yet by early morning, they had already pinned him as the perpetrator and formed a joint investigation to hunt him down. Typically, law enforcement relied on tangible evidence and underwent lengthy procedure to secure authorization from the higher-ups. And the fact that they were acting with such conviction now...

It left him with two possibilities: either they had grabbed hold of evidence that could condemn him, or... they were throwing all caution to the wind, intending to use this chaos to bring him down once and for all.

He Juan inclined more towards the latter because he knew very well how the police had been taking him as an eyesore, especially since he was hailed as the uncrowned hero of justice by the public. They believed that he was undermining their efforts and highlighting their inadequacies. They literally couldn’t wait for him to mess up, waiting for a chance to get rid of him. And now, the golden opportunity had finally presented itself.

But who could guarantee that the first possibility did not exist? That they had truly not gotten hold of anything about him?

What if there was another video leakage, one whose existence he was yet to be aware of, that had captured his face? He Juan weighed over his choices before making up his mind. "I want to meet with Captain Yi Peizhi."

Huang Zhiyan’s eyes widened in shock. "Boss—"

"Arrange the meeting as soon as possible. No need to beat around the bush. Tell him that XIU wishes to see him."

Huang Zhiyan sucked in a breath. He Juan had never taken the initiative to reveal his face or disclose his identity before. And now that he suddenly made this move, it could only mean that the situation was dire. Nodding, he muttered a quick ’roger’ before hastening to carry out the order.

"Clean up this place," He Juan instructed the others as he headed to the bathroom to wash the blood off his face. After that, he finally had a moment to check his phone. There were several missed calls from Jia Molei – which he chose to ignore for the time being – and a dozen more from Mu Yuze.

He Juan shut his eyes and resisted the urge to groan. Having not slept a wink throughout the night, the reflection that stared back at him was a somber and haggard man with stubbles on his chin. This disheveled appearance was definitely far from the image of suave Juan-gege in Mu Yuze’s mind. Alas, given the circumstances, could he even afford to care about appearances right now?

A wry smile tugged on He Juan’s lips as he dialed back, and the call connected before the first ring could even complete. "G–Gege...?" Mu Yuze’s shaky and unstable voice came from the other side.

Propping his hand on the sink, He Juan let out a slow breath. Perhaps due to the ordeal with He Xie which left him mentally drained, hearing Mu Yuze’s trembling voice right now felt like a crushing weight on his chest. It was as if the walls were closing in on him, making it difficult for him to breathe. Inhale, exhale. He repeated to himself again and again, and only then could he muster a casual and carefree tone. "Did you see the news?"

"En..."

"Don’t think about it too much," He Juan reassured him gently. "I encountered a problem while taking care of something, which resulted in the current situation. But don’t worry. Gege will handle it, and this will all blow over soon. There’s no need to be afraid, okay?"

Knowing how empty his words must have sounded, he badly wished that he could fly to Mu Yuze’s side and offer comfort in person, to hug him and reassure him that everything would be fine. How did Mu Yuze feel when he heard the news for the first time, he wondered? He must have been so surprised. He Juan felt distressed and guilty for making him so anxious, but just as he was about to speak again, a knock sounded on the bathroom door, followed by Huang Zhiyan’s voice,

"Boss, the other side is ready whenever you are."

He Juan took a deep inhale and quickly spoke to the phone, "Gege has some urgent matters to attend to right now, so I might not be able to answer your calls for the time being. Be good, don’t forget to eat well and focus on your studies, okay? I promise, I will give you a call later."

He hung up on the phone after hearing the confirmation from the other side. Casting one last look to the man in the mirror, he adjusted his mental state and opened the bathroom door, meeting Huang Zhiyan’s somber gaze.

"Good work," he said. "Let’s go now."
