Chapter 481: Help...

He Juan was not surprised when the next day, he received news that Jia Molei would be heading to Myanmar with Marius to join the R&D team. Somehow, he had seen it coming when he noticed the fiery gleam in the two men’s eyes when they discussed Golden Sand last night.

Despite Marius’ easy going demeanor, deep down he was fiercely competitive, and an utter workaholic who did not like to back down from challenges. The exorbitant manufacturing cost of the drug had troubled him for quite some time, and now that he saw a glimmer of hope in Jia Molei’s expertise, how could he ever let this opportunity slip through his fingers? If everything went well, this would be a massive breakthrough to his business! 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞

With a helpless look, He Juan could only bid them farewell and remind them not to forget rest amidst their work.

Over the next few days, he threw himself into investigating Luo Xuan’s whereabouts in recent years, for he was certain that the man did not leave the country only for vacation purposes. He must have established other facilities abroad where the main research would be conducted. He Juan was almost a hundred percent sure of it because he could not find any documents regarding the ’serum’ Luo Xuan had inadvertently mentioned before.

He also subjected the rescued children to another round of examinations and discovered that only two of them had manifested into an Omega. As Luo Xuan had stated, they possessed extraordinary pheromones that could crush even those of Alphas. Aware that such power was dangerous in young hands, He Juan arranged a separate building for them to live in and also provided them with counseling, to prevent their mentality from growing crooked like Luo Xuan in the future.

During this period, the new law aimed at Omega protection was launched, sparking intense debates and controversy among the public. As per his promise, He Juan commanded his men to cooperate with Captain Yi Peizhi of the Yuyang Bureau’s Violent Crime Investigation Unit to root out establishments that exploited Omegas. The police momentum continued to soar as they garnered support from Omegas and Betas, while He Juan and his men dealt with the dirty work behind the scenes.

He was so busy running around that he did not even have the time to eat, let alone come home to see Mu Yuze. He could only soothe his longing by calling the boy whenever he had time.

Just like that, one week passed by in a flash and the legal documents for Ye Qiu and the children’s identities were finally approved. From now on, they were all officially registered under the surname Ye, as if they had truly become the inseparable part of Ye Qiu’s family.

Everyone was so happy and excited that they couldn’t wait to go out and celebrate. Alas, as if fate was throwing a twist, on the very day of their planned celebration, Marius – who had assured them that he would definitely make it on time – suddenly relayed the disappointing news of his flight delay.

"You guys should go ahead and start without me," he told He Juan through the phone. From the other side of the call, He Juan could faintly hear the flight announcements that spoke of the horrible weather.

"Is everything fine there?" He Juan asked worriedly, his eyes focused on the road as his hands expertly navigated the steering wheel."Is it a typhoon?"

"Yes, it’s been like this for hours," Marius let out a regretful sigh. "There is no way the plane can take off in such weather. I’m afraid I will not be able to make it back today, but everyone has been waiting for this dinner for a long time. Can you relay my apology to them, and let them know that I will treat them again once I’m back?"

He Juan clicked his tongue in exasperation. When Ye Qiu’s car in front gave a right turn signal, he also followed suit and trailed behind them. "I have no problems with it, but you know..." he groaned. "This dinner is going to be so awkward without you! The children are still a bit wary of me, and I can already imagine the disappointment when they hear that you will not be there!"

"Pfft!" Marius stifled in a laughter, though he himself had no idea why the others still could not warm up to He Juan after all this time. He could only attempt to switch the topic, "How about Mu Yuze? Why don’t you bring him along? He’s around the same age as Xiao Hu, right? Maybe he could help break the ice."

He Juan couldn’t help but scoff at the suggestion. Let’s not mention how taciturn Mu Yuze was and how he would most likely remain silent throughout the entire dinner, He Juan would never bring him out when two mutated Alphas were present – over his dead body! But of course, Marius was not yet privy to the boy’s manifestation, so He Juan could only come up with a random excuse, "He can’t. He has a ton of overdue homework to catch up on."

Marius sounded utterly helpless. "Why are you so strict? I don’t even supervise Sirius’ homework to such an extent."

The two of them did not talk for long before they ended the call.

Soon, He Juan and the others arrived at the restaurant. As it was located in the middle of a commercial street, they had to park the cars a distance away and walk for a few minutes. Exiting the vehicle, the children burst out with excitement, their joy as contagious as fireworks set off in the night sky.

"Hello, my name is Ye Hu. Nice to meet you!"

"Oh, hi there. Mine is Ye Zhan. Doesn’t it sound so mighty and imposing?"

"Mine... mine sounds better! I am Ye Baobao!"

Their happiness was so simple; just a legal name was enough to excite them for days or weeks to come, simply because it was a treasure they had never been able to afford. Ye Qiu understood their sentiments very well, that’s why she only showed a helpless look when the boys playfully bickered their ways into the restaurant. She appeared to be more at ease compared to her usual state, though her gaze still unconsciously flicked towards the CCTV cameras along the street – a habit that would likely take months or even years to fade away.

Walking alongside her, He Juan cleared his throat and announced, "I have bad news. M might not be able to join us tonight."

He had prepared himself for an expression full of disappointment and forced smiles, but then Ye Qiu simply blinked and replied with nary a fluctuation in her tone, "Ah yes, he called me in the car earlier. Everyone else heard it too. It’s okay, he promised to make it up once he returns."

Black lines formed on He Juan’s forehead, and he couldn’t help but curse softly when realization dawned upon him. Of course, if Marius had the time to call him, why couldn’t he inform Ye Qiu and the children as well? Damn it, it turned out he was the last one to know. He could not believe that he had fallen for such a cheap trick! Caught between laughter and tears, He Juan began to brew a grand revenge in his mind, ready to get back at Marius for pulling a prank on him, when Ye Qiu’s voice chimed in again, "What about that boy who lives with you? Why not invite him to join us?"

Hearing that, a hint of amusement flickered in He Juan’s eyes. Was this what they meant by couples having a connection? Even the question they asked was exactly the same! He Juan opened his mouth to answer, but before he could say anything, a burst of exclamation behind them cut him off.

"J–Jie!"

"Ye-Jiejie, Ye Hu is sick!"

Both of them turned around to find Ye Hu, who had been jumping and kicking around energetically just moments before, was now hunching over on the sidewalk, his face pale and brows furrowed. The four other boys hovered around him in a fluster, asking if he had a headache, nausea or any other symptoms.

Ye Hu raised his head, revealing his sweaty face and a pair of bloodshot eyes, and his trembling lips parted to form a soundless word. "Help..."

As soon as He Juan’s gaze landed on him, his heart gave a powerful lurch without any rhyme or reason, and his scalp prickled with numbness. It was the instinct honed during the years in the underworld – an instinct that could sense danger even before it made itself known.

Time seemed to slow down, each passing second was stretched indefinitely.

One moment, the air was still crisp and cool, reminiscent of the late autumn, and the next moment, an overwhelming surge of pheromones burst forth from Ye Hu’s body like the explosion of a nuclear bomb! It was the violent pheromones of a newly manifested mutated Alpha!

Something inside He Juan’s mind seemed to explode as the churning pheromones engulfed him, causing his blood to roar in his ears. His vision dimmed and a noisy buzz dominated his hearing, so loud that he could barely register Ye Qiu’s horrified scream beside him or the utter chaos that erupted on the street.

Thirteen years ago, in a small peaceful town in Canada, a tragedy struck when a ten years old child suddenly manifested in the middle of a busy street. The torrent of pheromones surged out uncontrollably from the small body, immediately killing the lives of seven people who were closest to him. And according to the report, those seven people—

He Juan choked on a mouthful of blood, his voice a primal roar, "GET AWAY FROM HIM!"

—their skulls and brains were crushed, and they died within the span of a breath.

The thick scent of blood permeated the air, as if the world itself was embracing a bleak and somber winter in advance.
