Chapter 467: Can’t You?

He Juan thought that he must have heard wrong, that the drug must be potent enough to cause auditory hallucinations. However, his flimsy hope was shattered to pieces when Mu Yuze raised his head and stated again, firmer this time, "I want to work for you in the future after I graduate from school. Can I?"

Staring into the boy’s earnest and solemn eyes, He Juan only felt a surge of chill creeping into his heart that caused him to break into cold sweat. Oh no, Mu Yuze was serious. He was serious about this decision. It was not something he had blurted out in the heat of the moment. How? How could he... 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢

Perhaps because He Juan had remained silent for too long, Mu Yuze began to blabber out his thoughts, flustered. "I– I will not hold you back. I also know how to fight. Just a little bit more and I would be able to advance into black—"

"No," He Juan cut him off in a tone that brooked no refusal, causing him to raise his head in shock. Mu Yuze’s heart trembled. He had never heard He Juan talk to him in such a frosty tone before and his eyes... those beautiful eyes which used to be filled with warmth and tenderness, were now hard and stormy akin to the overcast sky before a storm. The pressure he exuded was so heavy that it rendered Mu Yuze unable to breathe. He stressed, "This is the end of discussion. Do not bring this up again, or I’m going to be angry, Mu Yuze."

He Juan even called him by his full name, meaning that he was truly angered this time...

A sharp pang of pain pinched Mu Yuze’s heart, it was as if an invisible hand had crushed the most tender part of his flesh, bruising it all over. He Juan’s blatant refusal was a huge blow to the boy, who had pinned all of his hope on this request. He lowered his head and parted his trembling lips. "Why...? Why are you so quick to reject me? Is it because I’m an omega? Do you think I can’t do it... because I’m an omega?"

That question was wrong on so many levels that He Juan couldn’t help but laugh, cold and bitter. Goodness, he could not believe this was happening. How... How did things turn out like this? He had painstakingly created a fortress to keep his cherished flower safe, letting it bloom beautifully without having to weather through wind or snow, but the aforementioned flower was not only curious about the outside world, but also wanted to go out and explore it! The flower had been protected so securely all this while, how could it survive out there? It would be dirtied, plucked and stomped to death!

Once again, He Juan’s memory drifted back to the time when he rushed over to the scene of the kidnapping and found Mu Yuze gruesomely injured. That image still haunted him to this day. It was fortunate that he arrived on time, or else what could have become of Mu Yuze by now?

He Juan’s breath caught in his throat just by the mere thought of it. Frustrated, he ran his fingers through his hair and chuckled, though it was devoid of warmth at all. His tone was even a bit harsh, "Okay, let me tell you clearly. Even if you’re an Alpha, my answer remains the same: no. Don’t even think about it."

All of a sudden, fatigue overwhelmed him and he wearily motioned for the boy to leave, "Go. Return to your room now. We will talk about this again tomorrow."

Had Mu Yuze calmed down and thought about this properly, he would have understood where He Juan was coming from. If not for the kidnapping incident, He Juan would never have exposed his identity to him. His stance was clear from the start— he wished to give Mu Yuze an ordinary, secure life.

With that being the case, how could he ever agree to this ludicrous request?

Alas, the sixteen-year-old Mu Yuze was unable to see beyond his emotions, especially in front of the man he liked. His chest was akin to a monstrosity of emotions, too big for his ribcage to contain, and he felt like he was going to die if he did not let everything out right now.

With reddened eyes, he jumped to his feet and glowered defiantly. "No!" He clenched his fists tight, his voice demanding. "Let’s talk right now. Or else you’re going to leave me behind again!"

He Juan’s head throbbed at this sudden burst of stubbornness. With a hand on his forehead, he tried to reason with the distressed boy, "Haven’t I told you that I will be less busy from now on?"

But Mu Yuze pressed on, refusing to back down. "Then do you admit that you have been avoiding me on purpose all this time? Look at me. Look into my eyes and swear that you have never done it!" His voice wavered with emotions.

He Juan was struck utterly speechless. His throat tightened as he struggled to say, "Xiao Ze..."

"You can’t, can you?" Mu Yuze sneered. He could not even feel the pain from where his nails sank into the flesh of his palms, for it was overshadowed by the throbbing ache in his chest. His eyes burned hot, but he stubbornly did not let his tears fall. However, when he spoke again, the pain and fragility seeped into his voice, "So it’s all because of my manifestation? Do you despise me now that I have turned into an omega, Gege?" His voice was soft, almost like a wistful plea, and each word he said was akin to a burning iron that seared into He Juan’s heart.

"For God’s sake, no!" He Juan leapt to his feet as well, too caught up by the shock and incredulity. His usual mask of composure was nowhere to be seen, as he could not fathom how the boy could even entertain such a thought. "I don’t... I never despise you at all, Xiao Ze! How could you even think of something like that?!"

"Then why are you avoiding me?!"

Almost driven mad, He Juan blurted out without even thinking, "It’s because you’re my—!"

But the milliseconds before the word ’mate’ escaped his lips, a shred of rationality held him back. No, this was not the right time. Revealing such an important thing when they were not clear-headed was not a wise choice.

"What?!" Mu Yuze demanded harshly. "I’m your what? What kind of excuse are you going to use again this time?!"

"Xiao Ze..." He Juan began, only to notice that something was off. He could sense Mu Yuze’s pheromones thickening in the air, and this was not the level he could emit just because he was being emotional. He Juan’s eyes widened in realization as he took in the sight of Mu Yuze’s red-rimmed eyes, flushed cheeks and tense figure. "You... how are you feeling right now?"

Mu Yuze snarled like a bristling cat, "Don’t try to change the—"

"Mu Yuze!" He Juan hurried to grip the boy’s shoulders, silencing him in an instant. His face was extremely somber as he stressed, "Tell me, how are you feeling right now? You’re showing signs of entering a heat."

"I... what?" Mu Yuze was dumbfounded and forgot his anger for a moment. With He Juan’s question, he checked in on himself and belatedly realized how hot his breathing was. Sweat soaked into his hairline, his heart was beating fast, and a wave of restlessness overcame him. The place where He Juan touched was tingling and searing. He was dazed. "I’m in... heat?"

"Pre-heat," He Juan corrected. He bit the inside of his cheek and forced himself to remain calm. "It’s okay, don’t be afraid. It’s not too late yet. Listen to me. Go to your room right now and lock the door, okay? Do not open it no matter what. Make sure your windows are closed too. I’m going to call someone here to buy you supplies." He emphasized once again, "Remember, do not open the door, even if it’s me."

"Go!" He ushered the boy to the door in haste, unsure of what he could do in this state. His mate entering his first heat, while he himself was in this weakened state? It would only end in disaster!

After that, he turned around and frantically swept his gaze over the room to search for his phone. Where had he put that damned phone?! Oh right, it was in his suit jacket. He started to walk toward the hamper, only to freeze when a body suddenly collided with his back, followed by a pair of arms around his torso.

"Mu Yuze!" Angry veins throbbed on He Juan’s forehead. "Are you even listening to me?! Let go of me. Now!"

He tried to peel Mu Yuze’s arm off him, but the boy clung tighter to him instead. He dared not use too much force either for fear that he would accidentally hurt the boy. The scent of lavender and peppermint surrounded him, so thick and sweet that He Juan felt like he was going to be choked to death.

Danger! his mind clamored in alert. He had to get away from Mu Yuze as soon as possible!

Alas, just as he opened his mouth to speak, he heard the boy say with a hint of tears in his voice,

"Why... even at a time like this, why are you still pushing me away?" He whispered softly and tremblingly. "Can’t you look at me? Just once, He Juan. Can’t you?"
