Captured By The Cold Detective (BL)-Chapter 463: Go Home
When the muzzle of the rifle pointed at him, He Juan’s ears buzzed and his instinct took control of his body at once. He retrieved his gun, pulled off the safety trigger, raised his hand and—
BANG!
Two gunshots sounded almost simultaneously, so close together that they seemed like a single shot.
A deadly silence hung in the air, only to be broken when Marius’ voice traveled from the earpiece, "I heard a gunshot. Everyone in the building, report your current situation."
"First floor, safe."
"Second floor, safe."
"Third floor..."
The reports came one after another, but the fifth floor remained silent. Sensing something amiss, Marius spoke again, this time with a hint of graveness in his voice, "XIU, report your current situation."
Rapid footsteps approached from the other side of the room, and everyone was shocked when they saw the scene of the confrontation. "Boss!"
The subordinate – who had spotted the hidden guard first – gasped for breath, his face drained of color and cold sweat rolled down his back. The voices of the others allowed him to snap back to reality just in time for the guard to collapse with a bullet wound on his chest.
"B–Boss!" He cried out fearfully as he rushed towards He Juan. "Are you okay, Boss?!" He tried to inspect He Juan’s body, but the man’s blood-soaked state made it difficult for him to ascertain whether he was injured or not.
"I..." He Juan had barely started to speak when the second inquiry came from Marius.
"XIU, report your current situation please. If you don’t reply to this within five seconds, I’m entering."
"I’m fine," He Juan told his men, earning him a collective sigh of relief. Everyone was at ease knowing He Juan was unharmed, and under his dismissal, they resumed their task, while one of them brought the comatose guard outside. And hence, nobody noticed that He Juan’s fingers were shaking ever so slightly when he raised his hand to tap on his earpiece. "This is XIU. There was a little accident here, but everything has been taken care of."
"Good," Marius replied with a palpable hint of relief.
He Juan’s gaze then shifted to the documents under his feet, and his gaze turned complicated. Through his peripheral vision, he spotted the lighter that had been tossed aside on the ground, and the first thought that popped up in his mind was— ’Should I burn everything?’
But he quickly slapped himself mentally for even entertaining such a thought. Why should he hide the evidence as if... as if it was some kind of shameful secret?! If he was certain that Luo Xuan was innocent, then all the more reason he had to confront the man rather than getting rid of the evidence! He crouched down and quickly gathered the materials into a box, and a sliver of relief seeped into his heart when he did not find another personal signature of Luo Xuan— or perhaps everything had already been burned.
He Juan passed the box to his men as they prepared to leave the archive room. His team had already gone ahead to inspect the offices, and they reported nothing unusual.
He Juan nodded, "Let’s go out first and—" Halfway through the sentence, a wave of dizziness struck him and he staggered, causing a group of big men to receive a huge fright.
"Boss!!"
He Juan raised a hand to indicate that he was fine, but he couldn’t help but grimace when the movement pulled on the wound on his arm.
Just before the guard fired his shot, He Juan had tilted his body slightly to the side and resulted in the bullet brushing against his arm, carving quite a deep gash. However, it was nothing but a minor injury, so He Juan did not think much about it and opted to round up the business on this floor first.
But who could have guessed that he would feel more and more horrible with each passing second?
Right now, his complexion was ghastly and beads of sweat formed on his hairline, dampening his hair. His throat felt dry and hot, and his tongue numb. He squeezed his eyes shut, trying to alleviate the dizziness to no avail. This time, he finally admitted that something was terribly wrong. It was clearly not the first time he had been shot – hell, he was certain that he could still fight even with a bullet in his body – but never before had he felt such discomfort.
In the face of his flustered subordinates, He Juan spoke through gritted teeth, "There’s something in the bullet. Find out what it is!"
"Yes, Sir!" The men sprang into action. One of them communicated through the earpiece, another stepped forward to assist He Juan downstairs, while the rest conscientiously carried the boxes of documents.
"XIU!" Marius, who had received the news, came to check on him on the first floor. His face turned grim when he saw He Juan’s horrible state. "The bullets are reserved for mutated children in case they become deranged, so there’s a considerable amount of tranquilizer and paralyzing substance coating them. How are you feeling now?"
He Juan exerted all of his strength to raise his head and forced a smile on his face, "A little dizzy."
Of course, it was more than just a little. Right now, his vision was spinning and his head felt like cotton. The sounds around him seemed muffled, as if separated by a layer of water. If even he, as an adult superior Alpha, could hardly bear the discomfort, he could not fathom the agony those children felt when the guns were pointed at them. Just the mere thought of it made his chest stuffy in both sorrow and fury.
Faintly, he heard Marius say, "It’s nothing harmful, but you should get it treated. Oh right, Doctor Jia is currently injured. Do you want to take a trip to the hospital? Or you can also go home and sleep it off..."
Marius had said so much, but the only thing that stuck to He Juan’s brain was the last sentence. "Go home..." he murmured. "I should go home..."
Hearing that, Marius promptly arranged a car and a driver for him, then stuffed him into the vehicle. "Are you sure you can manage it by yourself?" He asked in deep concern.
"Such a worrywart..." He Juan chuckled softly and waved him off. "Go. Just take care of things here."
With a helpless sigh, Marius instructed the driver to take care of him and made sure to take him inside before leaving.
The driver – one of Marius’ men – asked politely, "Where should we go, Mr. XIU?"
He Juan muttered his address and leaned his head tiredly against the seat as the car left the mountainous area. His mind was chaotic and full of fragmented images, but at the same time he was also not thinking about anything at all.
He could only feel a burning sensation on his pocket where the paper with Luo Xuan’s personal signature was. The heat seemed to shoot up to his head, making him feel increasingly muddled.
Should he give Luo Xuan a call? Right, he should. He needed to ask him directly about how his signature could end up in a place like that. He Juan groggily reached for his phone, only to recall that it was the wee hours in the morning right now. He had no idea where the man was at the moment. If he was back in the country, it was not inappropriate of He Juan to contact him at a time like this.
With that in mind, he let his hand drop to his side and exhaled heavily.
Time passed by like a blur. He Juan was not even aware that he had dozed off until he was jolted awake when the car came to a stop and the driver announced, "We have arrived, Sir."
He Juan forced his heavy eyelids to open and he clutched his dizzy head, groaning silently. He straightened up and offered his gratitude to the driver, "Thank you for—" but his words abruptly died down in his throat when he saw the familiar house outside the window.
It was the house he shared with Mu Yuze!
He Juan’s breath hitched on his throat. How?! Hadn’t he given the address of the temporary residence he was staying in? So how could he end up here instead?! When he noticed the blood on his clothes, He Juan grew more panicked, and the drug in his system made his mind even hazier. His mind drew a blank. He almost could not keep his cool under this unexpected predicament. In the end, only one thought remained in his mind.
Oh no, he couldn’t let Mu Yuze see him like this!
"Sir?" The driver asked when he saw how He Juan remained motionless on his seat.
"I’m sorry, can you—" He Juan spoke hastily to ask the driver to turn back the car. But everything was too late.
Mu Yuze, who was struggling with insomnia with his unanswered message, caught sight of the car and sprinted out of the house, slamming the gate open with eyes wide in hope.
