Captured By The Cold Detective (BL)-Chapter 149: Ten Years Ago
Meanwhile, in the Municipal City Bureau.
Mu Yuze stepped into the interrogation room and gently closed the door behind him. Even though it was only a soft click, the skinny and haggard teenager inside was still jolted awake from his shallow sleep and raised his head in fluster. The drowsiness had not even dissipated from his eyes when he looked around in panic. And then when he noticed Mu Yuze standing on the doorway, he flinched so hard that he almost fell off the chair, only to scramble for balance in the nick of time.
Looking at this anxious and terrified demeanor, somewhere deep in Mu Yuze’s heart seemed to be poked by a burning stick, sore and uncomfortable.
As expected... Wu Yuan really reminded him of himself. It could be said that what they experienced was so similar that Mu Yuze could easily put himself in the teenager’s shoes.
Ten years ago, he had also sat in that seat, all alone. Alas, his stubborn temperament did not allow him to show the slightest hint of weakness no matter how frightened he was. As such, he could only clench his teeth and bear the pressure of being a suspected felon, just like an abandoned cub who fiercely bared his not yet grown teeth to the outside world.
So wretched, pathetic and pitiful...
He pretended not to notice Wu Yuan’s fidgety and unnerved look as he placed the cup of warm water he had brought with him on the table. Then he dragged the chair and sat down. He was fully aware that the little guy had been interrogated by a few of his colleagues before and as a result, had received quite a large scare. Thus, as soon as he saw Mu Yuze sat down in front of him, his breathing abruptly quickened in pace, sounding so harsh and jarring amidst the desolate room.
Mu Yuze was not a warm person, nor did he know how to comfort others. Even more toward this guy who had reminded him of his awful past, he knew very well that whatever words of comfort would seem empty and useless.
He recalled how his mind had been filled with dark and vicious thoughts. They circulated in his mind again and again and eroded his sanity bit by bit.
—It’s over. My life is over now. Why... Why should it be me? It’s clearly him who deserved to die, so why should I be locked up here?!
In a moment of desperation, he had thought that he was willing to go down to Hell as long as he could drag his vile father along. However, when it was time to pass on judgment, he was utterly unreconciled. Unwilling. He thought of how the world had never been fair toward him. He desperately cried out for justice, yet no one heard him... because no one cared.
If only Juan-gege had not saved him from that dark mire...
Mu Yuze lowered his lashes as warmth flashed through his eyes. He reached out a hand and pressed the hidden button below the table. Then, he finally opened his mouth to speak, "From now on, the conversation we have here will only be known to you and me. There will be no other third person."
Wu Yuan was stunned, his red-rimmed eyes flew wide akin to a bewildered hamster.
Mu Yuze gestured toward the cup of water. "Feel free to drink. Don’t catch a cold."
Perhaps sensing that Mu Yuze was different from the previous officers who had ’visited’ him, Wu Yuan gave him a tentative glance before reaching out to clasp his trembling fingers around the cup. The comfortable warmth traveled to his freezing hands and his tense shoulders loosened by a fraction.
Mu Yuze trained his gaze on the table whilst rapping his fingers on his knee. Without a warning, he started to talk in a low voice. "Ten years ago, I was also brought into the police station under suspicion of murder. The victim was... my father."
Wu Yuan sucked in a breath and his hands shook, almost spilling out the water inside the cup. However, Mu Yuze continued without a care. It was as if he was telling this matter not to Wu Yuan, but to his past self who felt as if he had been abandoned by the whole world. "My father was a gambler and drunkard. He always carried the smell of booze on his body and he slurred his words when he spoke. In my eyes, he was very disgusting and I have never bothered to hide my disdain. Both of us were very strong-headed and we fought every single time – no, to be exact, it was him who always beat me up. I was fourteen at that time, but because of malnutrition, my body was very skinny and I could not win against my Alpha father." Mu Yuze’s voice was low, unhurried and steady. His tone did not even fluctuate. It was like he was telling a fictional story instead of his dark past which he would rather forget.
Mu Yuze breathed in, "One time, he came home drunk, beat me and cursed me for being a burden out of nowhere. I was annoyed, and even though my whole body hurt all over, I still tried to fight back. Perhaps he was really tipsy that time, his movement was uncoordinated and I used too much force to push him. He knocked his head on the bedside drawer and..." he closed his eyes to adjust his emotions, and his voice came out slightly raspy when he spoke. "...he fainted. His head bled. There was so much blood."
At this point, Wu Yuan was not even breathing anymore. The whole room was silent, so silent it was as if Mu Yuze was talking only to himself.
"It was the first time I have ever won a fight against my father. Of course, I was elated, but more than that, I was terrified, especially when I saw that he was bleeding nonstop. And then... I ran out. I ran a few laps around the neighborhood, thinking of who I should call for help. I didn’t have a phone and my relationship with the neighbors was not very good as well." He snorted and gave a casual shrug. "But it’s not like I could let him die just like that, right?"
"But then, before I could even call for help, the police arrived. My father, he... he had died of excessive bleeding. I didn’t even know who called the police when everyone suddenly pointed their fingers at me. Even until I was sitting inside the interrogation room, I still felt as if I was dreaming.
"To be honest with you, I have been wishing for him to die everyday, but when he really died, what remained in me was only confusion. How did someone like him die so easily like that?" He suddenly raised his eyelids and looked into Wu Yuan’s eyes, asking for the very first time,
"What do you think? Was it really that simple to kill someone?"
