Chapter 148: Something Is Wrong

He Juan stared at the man in a daze, his ears ringing as though someone had struck a heavy gong right beside them. The loud noise echoed again and again without stopping for a long time.

Who... did he say He Juan had killed?

The man’s brother and... He Juan’s own brother? He had a brother...?

Seeing He Juan’s petrified state, the man could easily guess that what he said had shocked He Juan down to the core. Manic satisfaction bloomed inside his chest as if he would be happier the more He Juan suffered. If only the smile on his face was not so heartbreaking...

"’I forgot’... are you going to say it again?" His fist pressed against the ground was trembling, and so was his entire body. "Are you going to chalk everything up to your damn memory loss, huh?"

He Juan’s pale lips parted without a sound. He was at an utter loss of words. Confusion, bewilderment and fluster... everything mixed together into a large vortex that overwhelmed his senses. There was so much for him to take and his head felt swollen as if they were going to burst apart at any moment. He could only stare into the man’s brilliant blue eyes, taking in the intense agony, crazed glint and deep bitterness within them.

Just who... are you?

Exactly what have I forgotten?

He Juan had no idea how long time had passed. It might as well be two or twenty seconds, yet for him, it was like years. He watched blankly as the man closed his eyes and took a deep breath, his jaws tensing as if he was desperately struggling to rein in his emotions. When he opened his eyes again, there was nothing but bone-chilling coldness and apathy.

Shudders ran down He Juan’s spine and his instinct instantly warned him of an approaching danger.

Not far from them, Jia Molei scrambled to climb up the slippery hill, his entire body drenched and muddy from head to toe. The blood on his face had been washed away, but the crimson stain on his clothes lingered. There was a three or four inch tear on his clothes where one could catch a glimpse of a deep bleeding gash. Even then, it was as if he could not feel the pain at all. He raised his head in time to see the attacker pull out a sealed syringe and flick the cap open, aiming it right on He Juan’s neck!

Jia Molei’s pupils shrunk. "He Juan—"

He Juan’s defensive reflexes kicked in as soon as he saw the sharp tip of the injection draw near. With a gasp, he recalled Jia Molei’s moves earlier and subconsciously struck out his palm to interject it. Alas, he did not expect that the man would not play by common sense.

Instead of stabbing the needles into He Juan’s skin, the man spun the glass syringe between his fingers at the last moment and crushed it with a clench of his palm!

Small fragments of glass, droplets of transparent liquid and blood fell on his face, mixing together with the torrential rain until they could not be distinguished anymore. Stunned, He Juan was unable to react and could only stare at the man in a daze. Just what was happening...?

The attack he had been anticipating did not come. Instead, he only felt the cold rain falling relentlessly onto his cold and numb body, carrying with it a faint sweet scent that was almost overpowered by the pungent scent of petrichor and mud. However, as soon as He Juan breathed it in—

Ba-thump!

His heart gave a strong jolt and his vision instantly blurred. Abnormal heat surged from his chest to his entire body, even the tip of his freezing fingers. There was an incessant throbbing somewhere on his body and it took him a while to discern that it came from both his skull and his Alpha’s gland.

"You... fucker!" Jia Molei exploded in rage. Disregarding the wounds on his body, he made a powerful leap toward the attacker only to be evaded when the man rolled off He Juan’s body. After that, as if he had done whatever he came here to do, he ducked away from Jia Molei’s range of attack and jumped down the muddy cliff. His body was surprisingly light and agile. In a flash, he had sprung up and vanished in between the dense population of trees around. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺

Jia Molei neither had time nor energy to chase after him. Breathing heavily, he rushed back to He Juan and found the man curling up on the ground, trembling nonstop. His eyes were shut, brows furrowed and jaws clenched tightly. He was obviously in pain.

Jia Molei’s heart dropped to the pit of his stomach. However, years of experience in the medical field compelled him to remain calm and composed even in the most critical moment. He grabbed He Juan’s shoulders and pried open his eyelids to check that he was still half-awake. After that, he pressed his fingers on He Juan’s neck and measured his pulse, pursing his lips tight when he found the irregular and rapid rhythm. Lastly, he checked He Juan’s head and the location of his previous operation. He breathed a sigh of relief when he found no blood and injuries.

But why was He Juan acting like this? Knitting his brows, he asked, "Where are you hurting? Is it your head?"

All the while, He Juan seemed to have been thrown into an inebriated state. He could perceive that the person tossing him around was Jia Molei and subconsciously reached out to grab his wrist. His breathing was hot, so hot it was as if a flame had been ignited inside his body. "Molei.... I, I don’t feel so well..."

"No shit, I can see that!" Jia Molei hissed in a low voice. He then proceeded to swing He Juan’s arm around his shoulders to prop him up. "Come on, we have to go to the hospital!" Even though the syringe had not been injected into He Juan’s system, he still could not be rest assured.

As he was helping He Juan to stand, he heard He Juan murmur with uneven breathing, "I... have a brother? Do I have a brother...? Do you... know..."

Jia Molei swallowed hard, his voice was slightly hoarse as he said, "We... will talk about this after you recover. I will tell you everything, okay...?" It was not until now that he realized what kind of peril they were in. He had spent seven years carefully hiding the truth from He Juan and thought that they would be able to spend the rest of their lives like this. However, he was obviously too naïve. Their enemies were vicious, cunning and ruthless. And they were closing in on them fast. Keeping He Juan in the dark would only harm him in the long run. It was better to inform him first hand so he could be prepared.

Though he had no idea how He Juan would fare after knowing everything all over again...

However, it was obvious that He Juan could no longer hear him. He didn’t even have the strength to stand. Groaning, he only felt his inner temperature rising with an extremely high speed whereas his skin was still icy cold. The two contrasting temperatures caused him even more pain. "Molei, my gland..." heaving, he squeezed the words out with the last drop of his strength. "Something is... wrong..."

"Your gland?" Jia Molei was startled. He was not an Alpha, so his knowledge regarding that organ was not quite sufficient.

But then as though recalling something, his gaze abruptly snapped to the glass fragment on the ground. It had almost been washed away by the stream of water coming from uphill but Jia Molei’s eyes keenly caught a fragment that was wedged inside the soil. Supporting He Juan’s weight with his arm, he bent down to pick it up and put it close to his nose, sniffing lightly.

The rain had almost washed all of the scent away, and the sweetness that lingered on the glass fragment was so faint that it was almost negligible.

But as soon as Jia Molei smelled it, it was as if lightning had struck him right on the head. His blood ran cold and his complexion turned ashen. Jia Molei burst out in curses, his previous composure shattered into pieces in the face of the attacker’s ruthlessness.

Fuck, no wonder He Juan reacted like this! He had been affected by this drug that was specifically created for Alphas. It was colorless, tasteless and only smelled mildly sweet like morning dew. One could even pass it off as fresh water fetched from the spring waterfall. Yet the effect was so potent that an Alpha only had to inhale its scent to be stimulated.

—It was none other than AX-03!
