Chapter 150: Did You?

Wu Yuan’s face became even paler, if it was possible.

As though Mu Yuze’s question had evoked a piece of terrible memory he would rather forget, his body started to tremble like a sieve. The temperature in the room was clearly well-maintained, yet he looked like he had been thrown into the depth of an icy lake from how hard his teeth were chattering.

"I... I don’t..." he stuttered out, unable to form a coherent sentence.

Mu Yuze did not wait for him to adjust his emotions before he added, his calm demeanor a stark contrast to the teenager’s trembling figure. "At first, I thought it was so simple. Just one push... just by pushing him that one time, I could already kill him. But then, someone knocked some sense into me and told me I was too naïve. If it was really that simple to kill someone, then why did I have to endure his abuse for years? Why did I have to suffer for such a long time?"

The corner of Mu Yuze’s lips curled into a very faint smile, so faint it was almost unnoticeable. "As it turned out, what he told me was true. Aren’t you curious, Wu Yuan? I was clearly charged with the crime of murder. But ten years later, here I am, sitting in front of you as a police officer. Do you want to know what happened?"

Wu Yuan was slowly sucked in by Mu Yuze’s serene and tilting voice. Perhaps it was the man’s unique temperament or perhaps it was because the man’s past was too similar to what he was going through right now, he found himself unable to hold back the itch in his heart. With a shaky voice, he stammered timidly, "W–What happened...?"

Though Mu Yuze’s sitting posture did not change, the tension on his shoulders loosened ever so slightly. He had been worried that the little guy would not cooperate with him, after having met quite a few ferocious and ruthless interrogators before. In the end, he was even forced to pull up his own past as the trump card.

He guessed that Wu Yuan’s feelings right now must be similar to him back then – so lonely and terrified, as if he had been abandoned by the whole world. Lo and behold, it looked like he was right.

The little guy’s face was still ashen and wan, but at least the terror in his eyes was not as severe as when Mu Yuze first came in.

So far, everything has been going according to Mu Yuze’s plan. First, reassure the teenager that he was not the only person who went through such an earth-shattering ordeal. Second, assert his own position as an ally. And lastly, give a subtle suggestion that his current situation was not as terrible as he had imagined, that there was still hope to redeem salvation.

Hope that... he was not a murderer.

Mu Yuze dropped a bomb in an airy tone, "I didn’t kill him. I never did..."

Wu Yuan’s eyes flew wide in extreme shock.

Mu Yuze added with a shrug, "My father had quite a lot of enemies, who knew what he was up to out there. From the time when I ran out of the house to when the police arrived, approximately half an hour had passed. Half an hour. It was more than enough time to commit a crime, especially a well-planned murder."

"And now, Wu Yuan..." Mu Yuze placed his hands on the table and slightly leaned forward, fixing his stare at Wu Yuan’s stumped face. "Tell me the truth. Did you really ’kill’ him... or did you only ’injure’ him?"

"I..." Wu Yuan’s breathing accelerated. Tears blurred his eyes before it quickly rolled down his cheeks uncontrollably. He choked on his words, "I... I don’t really know. If I say that, will you... will you believe me, mister?"

"I believe you," came Mu Yuze’s instant reply. He answered it in such a firm and confident tone that Wu Yuan could not hold back his tears anymore. Through Wu Yuan’s broken words and occasional hiccups, Mu Yuze finally managed to piece together the truth.

Tonight, there was really a huge fight between father and son. It was nothing new as they would often argue over the simplest matter, but unfortunately Wu Liang – Wu Yuan’s father – finally managed to touch his son’s reverse scale this time. The main problem was none other than the sum of money in Wu Yuan’s account – no, actually it was not his money. It was given by his teacher for his meals for fear that he would starve himself again.

Alas, Wu Yuan could not bear to use it. He’d rather go hungry and hoard this money like a treasure instead of spending it. As such, the money accumulated in his account and grew into quite a generous amount.

Wu Yuan had no idea where his father found out about it, but the man suddenly came home and demanded to borrow it. Wu Yuan knew his father very well. This was not the first time his money had been borrowed, but every single time, it would be wasted away and not a single cent was returned.

His prize money from various competitions, the little fee for doing others’ homeworks and also his tutoring wage... everything was squandered away by his bastard father.

Of course, Wu Yuan vehemently refused to hand the money over. And then, the simple argument turned into a physical fight. Wu Liang threatened to beat up his unfilial son to death and in retaliation, Wu Yuan grabbed a kitchen knife to defend himself. He screamed at his father not to force him otherwise he would really fight him to death.

However, Wu Liang was undeterred. He was certain that his timid son was all talk and would not dare to hurt him. In some senses, he was quite right. But he had forgotten one important fact. A rabbit, no matter how soft and harmless it was, would still bare its teeth and bite when it was backed into a corner.

"Father, he... he kept taunting and mocking me..." Wu Yuan almost curled himself up into a ball as he recounted the event a few hours ago. His frame shook badly and his pupils were dazed and unfocused. "He told me ’stab ah, come and stab me!’ and I... I..."

This time, Mu Yuze stood up from his seat and crouched down beside Wu Yuan. He hesitated briefly before reaching out to clasp Wu Yuan’s shoulders and turned him slightly so he could look the little guy straight in the eye. "Did you stab him? Tell me the truth, Wu Yuan. Did you?"

"I..." Wu Yuan stared vacantly into Mu Yuze’s eyes. They were dark and bottomless, yet strangely clear and limpid at the same time. There seemed to be a compelling force that whispered for him to tell the truth, that this was the last chance for him to grab onto salvation. He clung onto Mu Yuze’s arm almost like a madman.

Hiccuping, he gritted his teeth and forced out the truth from his raw throat, "I didn’t... I didn’t stab him!!"
