Captured By The Cold Detective (BL)-Chapter 135: He Is Not The Killer
On an ordinary spring night, a murder occurred in the rural part of the Yuyang City.
The eyewitnesses had uniformly testified that the father and son relationship was very bad. Everyday, the father only knew to smoke and gamble all day long and only returned once or twice a week to get more money. Their family’s savings were almost drained due to the man’s frivolous splurge. And when the son wanted to talk the father out of it, he only got beaten up as a result.
It was the perfect example of a family that broke apart after the mother’s death. The father could only turn to gambling and liquor to wash his sorrow away and neglected the child’s growth.
Their family was so well-known among the neighborhood that practically everyone could talk about their ironic tale for three days straight. No matter which person you asked, their answer was exactly the same, "Tsk tsk, Little Wu is really too pitiful. I have expected this day to come sooner or later. Mister police officer, you have no idea how despicable Old Wu is. If I was his son, I would also take up a kitchen knife and stab him to death! He deserved it!"
Apparently, their conflict had gotten more and more heated these past few weeks. The father seldom came home, but once he did, a big fight would always break out and people could hear their loud shouting from miles away. It was not clear what they were arguing about tonight, but the son had clearly reached his breaking point. In the heat of the moment, he grabbed a kitchen knife and drove it into his father’s stomach. The location of the stab was very delicate and punctured right into the major vessel, causing massive hemorrhage and resulting in a quick death.
The murder weapon was identified. The motive was clear. And the culprit had confessed to it as well.
It was a very simple case that could be concluded once the police gathered the crucial evidence and statements from both eyewitnesses and the culprit. After that, the son would undergo trial for his crime.
Many people might think it was unfair, but law had always been cold-blooded. A human life had been lost and regardless of the solid reason behind the act, it was still considered an unpardonable violation of law. The most they could do was to provide evidence of the domestic violence and appeal to the judge that it was self-defense on the poor culprit’s part.
Yes, it should be a very simple case but...
Captain Li Zhi of the Violent Crime Investigation Unit was having an immense headache right now. The reason was none other than the man who was standing in front of him – Mu Yuze. This subordinate of his had always been quick-witted, composed and capable. All this time, Mu Yuze had always been the most outstanding officer under him, and Li Zhi would always feel proud when other divisions expressed their envy. Alas, Mu Yuze was just too stubborn sometimes.
Li Zhi did not claim that it was a lesser trait. On the contrary, this stubbornness had given birth to an unyielding spirit and resolution to chase after the truth, and Li Zhi liked to see this burning spirit in his eyes. But oh, if only he could say the same thing right now...
He pinched a cigarette butt between his fingers and tapped the ash to the ashtray. "Do you know the culprit?"
Mu Yuze frowned. He had both hands clasped behind his back as he stood on attention, yet somehow his demeanor gave off the impression of a rebellious streak. "I don’t know him but I believe there is something more to this case than what meets the eye. Captain, he is not the killer."
"Oh?" Li Zhi quirked his brow, yet his expression showed that he was not amused. "And on what basis do you say something like this? We have already secured all of the hard evidence and the confession. The case is basically locked now. You said you don’t know him, but you can confidently tell me he is not the culprit? Mu Yuze, can you hear how unreasonable you are right now?" He let out a cold laugh. "If he is not the culprit, then who? You?!" His tone raised higher in the end, enraged for how absurd Mu Yuze was acting.
Mu Yuze pressed his lips tight, his hands clenched tightly into fists behind his back. The tension in the air was so thick that one could cut it through with a knife. 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚
"What’s wrong? Say something!" Li Zhi continued to holler angrily. "The forensic results have come out. Aside from the victim and the culprit’s fingerprints, there is no third person who has touched the knife! Or are you saying that the victim has stabbed it into his own body?!"
Mu Yuze stared right into Li Zhi’s eyes, undeterred by the flying spit in the air. "Evidence can be planted."
"Ha..." Li Zhi was so angry that he could only laugh. This man had always been cool-headed and sensible, but why was he being so unreasonable right now? "So you are saying that there is a third person – the real culprit – who shoved the knife into the kiddo’s hand and then he conveniently told the kiddo to confess as well? Huh?!"
"That guy, he..." Agitation flashed through Mu Yuze’s dark eyes as he remarked dully, "His mental state is not good. There is a very high possibility that he was affected by an unknown factor when he was giving the confession."
"Then hand me the evidence!" Li Zhi slammed his palm on the table. His voice was so loud that it ricocheted off the walls. "What kind of unknown factor are you talking about? If you can prove that the little kiddo is not the culprit, then I will kneel down to you!!"
Li Zhi’s voice was so loud that the entire division could hear that. Even though there were a handful of people in the office, yet the atmosphere was as quiet as a funeral. It was not them who were being told off, yet everyone subconsciously shrunk their necks as though afraid that Li Zhi’s bursting rage could seep out of the crack of the door and reach them as well. They glanced at each other and saw the same confusion in the other’s eyes.
"Say... why do you think he’s so adamant that the son is not the culprit?"
"Who knows? The evidence, motive and murder weapon have been collected, right?"
"Uh-huh. The case is so simple that it should not even be transferred to our division. What’s wrong with Mu Yuze?"
They discussed in a hushed voice, fearing that the two people inside the Captain’s office could hear them. They could not help it. They had been working with Mu Yuze for years, yet it was the first time that such a huge argument had broken out between him and the Captain. It was like seeing the teacher’s pet suddenly turn rebellious. They almost thought that Mu Yuze had been possessed or bumped into something when he went out this morning.
A certain officer could not endure it anymore and nudged Kang Guanyu with his elbow, "Hey, why are you so silent? Do you know something about this?"
It was indeed unusual for Kang Guanyu not to jump in at the slightest chance to gossip. After being cued all of a sudden, he was startled and hesitated to speak. Everyone’s eyes lit up and they rolled their chairs near Kang Guanyu. "What’s wrong? So there is really a hidden story?!"
"This..." Kang Guanyu glanced at the closed door, conflicted. But in the end, he could not go against his gossipy nature. Sweeping his gaze over everyone, he put his forefinger on his lips and murmured in a small voice, "This is a matter I have heard a long time ago. It’s quite sensitive so... you’d better not say it in front of Mu Yuze."
Everyone nodded like chicken pecking rice. They leaned even closer and offered their ears for him.
Kang Guanyu let out a sigh. "Actually, it’s nothing complicated. I think... Mu Yuze is just sympathizing with the son. After all, he also experienced something similar." When everyone gave him a confused look, Kang Guanyu held his forehead and said helplessly, "What I mean is... even though the charges against him were cleared in the end and they found the real culprit, he has once been accused of killing his own father. Just like Wu Yuan right now."
