Chapter 116: Trustworthy?

There were so many files waiting to be transferred that for a period of time, the Violent Crime Unit’s members were akin to flapping chicken and headless flies as they rushed all over the places. As Xuanlong – the infamous mafia clan who had reigned absolute terror a decade ago – was involved in this murder case, the Interpol had been notified and rumors had been spreading wildly that they were going to send one of their members over for assistance.

This time, they had truly hit a jackpot!

The fact that Yuyang Municipal Bureau was the one who handled this case beautifully made Director Zhang very pleased that he issued a salary raise for everyone. That’s why, the group of lazy officers, who would complain about the inhuman abuse of capitalist at the drop of a hat, could be seen working as hard as an ox. Moreover, they were even delighted to do so. A newly transferred member from the Interpol! A new colleague! A foreigner! How cool!

For a while, bets were stacked high in the internal discussion system. People were trying to guess where the new member would come from and so far, the highest wagers landed in Vietnam, France and Korea. There was no other reason. They just wanted a good-looking person as a breath of fresh air after seeing the same stinky face all day long. It was even better if the one who came was a woman!

Seeing this chat had garnered numerous likes from others, Kang Guanyu exploded in anger and he typed furiously into his computer. [A breath of fresh air?! Our Violent Crime has enough fresh air! Let’s not mention how charismatic I am, how can you ignore Mu Yuze and the Captain?!]

The chat froze for a second before the same barrages appeared in a row.

[...hahaha.]

[...hahaha.]

[Alright, who is going to tell him?]

[Let’s ignore how uncharismatic you are for the time being, Mu Yuze is a walking air-con. Rather than fresh air, he’s going to freeze you to death! And your Captain... pfft, Kang Guanyu, are you blind?]

Kang Guanyu became angrier when he saw this. He glanced at the username and noted this person’s ID carefully in his heart. His fingers practically flew all over the keyboard. [You are blind. Your whole family is blind! You just don’t have the eyes to discern real jade. Our Captain is very handsome! He just doesn’t care about his appearance at all!!] 𝕗𝕣𝐞𝐞𝘄𝐞𝚋𝚗𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹.𝚌𝕠𝚖

The heated discussion in the internal system seemed to be miles away from the heavy silence in the Director’s office.

Li Zhi was sitting on the couch with a cup of steaming tea in his hands. He merely stared at the clear green surface without moving to drink it.

Sitting adjacent to him was Director Zhang of Yuyang Municipal Bureau, a 58 years old Beta who was a veteran on the field. Director Zhang calmly sipped on the tea, ignoring the deep frown on Li Zhi’s face.

The entire division was in a jubilant mood after solving a major case and the atmosphere had loosened a lot. The officers, who were drained like wilted vegetables from the continuous all-nighters, regained their vigor and their demeanor closely resembled a group of wild monkeys which had been released from the cage. In addition to the fact that they were going to welcome a new member from Interpol soon, the level of excitement instantly shot through the roof. It did not lose out to New Year’s.

Alas, Li Zhi did not share his brothers’ joy at all. On the contrary, he had been brooding over a few matters and his entire person was shrouded in a tense and gloomy aura. The more he pondered on it, the more he was unable to let go. As a result, here he was, catching the Director early in the morning for some tea.

He finished sorting out his thoughts and raised his head to address the Director. "I apologize for intruding on you so early in the morning, but... I have a few things I’d like to seek your advice on."

Director Zhang could already more or less guess what he wanted to talk about. Sighing, he put down his teacup on the low table and crossed his fingers on his lap. "Speak."

Li Zhi did not beat around the bush and started to relay his doubt. "As early as the first day we took on the murder case, you have given me full authority to lead the investigation. You even gave permission for a joint investigation with the sub-bureaus. Is it because... you have guessed that Xuanlong is involved in it?" As he spoke, he trained his gaze on the Director’s face, trying to find any subtle changes that might offer him an answer. He could not help this occupational disease, even if the one in front of him was a superior whom he respected.

There was just something about the case that he could not put his finger on. His instinct told him that everything was far from over, and what he glimpsed upon was just the tip of the iceberg. He was the type of investigator who would latch on any tiniest error once he sniffed it out. Usually, there were two outcomes to this predicament. First, there would be a new case which needed his full focus and he ended up throwing this matter to the back of his mind. And second, he would chase after the trail until he found out the truth. There was no in-between.

This time, there were no urgent cases which required his attention so... the second outcome it was.

Director Zhang sighed helplessly. "I know what you’re trying to imply. In fact, I am just as clueless as you are at first. It is my informant who warned me that something is off about the case."

Li Zhi mulled over the words. The fact that Director Zhang was willing to entertain him was already very generous of him when he could just use his superiority to brush Li Zhi off. Of course, Li Zhi knew how precious informants were. Their identity should be kept under tight lid and the less people knew them, the better. As such, he sensibly did not try to pry further into the identity of this informant. He just asked the other, "Are they trustworthy?"

"Absolutely." No doubt could be seen on Director Zhang’s face as he remarked calmly. "We have been working together for more than a decade."

As expected, old ginger would be spicier, Li Zhi mused. Every higher personnel would have one or two capable informants behind them. For Director Zhang to be able to occupy this position firmly for the last seven years implied that he was not as benevolent and compassionate as how his appearance made him out to be.

Li Zhi nodded. He had full trust in the Director’s capability and hence, he would give the informant the benefit of the doubt for the time being. He moved on to another question. "Then... what about the victim’s dying message? I personally think that it was not done in the heat of the moment. There must be a reason why the victim wrote that name of all people. Are you sure we are going to let him go just like that? Or..." Li Zhi narrowed his eyes sharply. "Have your informant told you something else, Director?"
